The Willie Mullins-trained 7yo was a runner-up in two Irish Grade 1 chase races at the end of last year, not landing a blow, but the form has been boosted. He was a close 2nd of 18 at the Festival in a handicap while racing off a high mark. His RPR rating posted that day is the best among these runners. Ridden by an apprentice in that race, and for this Grade 1 Paul Townsend takes over.

Salver probably performed at his best when 3rd at the Cheltenham Festival, and his pace at the finish should be good enough to get a win at Aintree.

Regents Stroll was beaten by a very progressive handicapper last time at Cheltenham. He ran a cracking race at this meeting last year, just failing to get the better of Honesty Policy. The step up to three miles is what the trainer has said he wants, and he should go well.

Miami Magic has proven to be tough to pass on decent going, and probably only Salver is capable of going past him on the run-in if close enough at the last.

Two wins in the last four races, and I am tipping a clean jumping performance can see Wendigo win this William Hill Mildmay Novices' Chase. Good to soft should be ideal conditions, and my tip is Jamie Snowdon's Wendigo wins this Grade 1.

JORDANS CROSS looks ready to tackle 3 miles plus, after running below par when 8th to Meetmebythesea in the Grade 2 Golden Miller at Cheltenham 4 weeks ago. He has won once in one run (100%) here at Aintree. One to watch.

Doyen Quest has been beaten by Salver on the last two starts, yet was closer last time at Windsor. His best runs have been on good ground, so the drier conditions today will aid his cause, and his jumping has improved. He missed Cheltenham to be kept fresh for this. He likes to go from the front, and while he is giving weight away, the track and conditions look sure to suit and he could produce more. 14/1 offers good each-way value for him to find a rhythm, and in doing so he will prove hard to peg back.

With impressive odds of 40/1, he has the potential to surprise as an each-way bet, thanks to his robust staying lineage from Soldier of Fortune and his knack for navigating tough conditions. Under the guidance of Anthony Honeyball, he demonstrated top-tier form by chasing and securing a place in a prestigious introductory hurdle, indicating that he is well equipped to tackle the demands of a competitive field.
