- The NBA has suspended Ja Morant for 25 games after he brandished a firearm online for the second time in a ten-week span.
- The first incident resulted in an eight-game suspension back in March.
- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement that, "...we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated.”
Ja Morant's NBA future is certainly in doubt as we enter the summer months. The two-time NBA All-Star's talent is undeniable. He has all the makings of a superstar who prior to last season had the kind of personality and image to make the 23-year-old a mountain of money in endorsements. But a pair of unseemly social media videos in which he was seen brandishing a firearm has essentially put his entire career in question. An eight-game suspension in March was viewed as a wake-up call for Morant. But just two months later, a new video began circling of Morant doing the same thing. It was clear that the NBA was going to come down harder on Morant, but Commissioner Adam Silver and the league waited until after the NBA Finals had wrapped before issuing their suspension. Morant will now miss 25 games or 30% of the regular season. This also feels as though it could be strike two for Morant, calling into question his long-term viability in the league. Sportsbooks are now offering odds on how many games he'll be sidelined for next season.

The Ja Morant situation isn't completely unprecedented in the NBA. The league has had a firm stance against guns for the better part of the last three decades. Famously, Gilbert Arenas was suspended for the majority of the '09-'10 season after admitting to storing unloaded firearms in his locker at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. It was later claimed that he and Javaris Crittenton had drawn guns on each other in the Wizards' locker room in the wake of an argument over gambling debts. After a lengthy NBA investigation, he was suspended for the remainder of the season by then-Commissioner David Stern.
