Le Tissier: ‘You Break The Rules, You Suffer The Consequences’

Speaking exclusively on The Jeff Stelling Show today, Southampton club legend Matt Le Tissier admitted the situation has caused “huge” reputational damage.

Le Tissier described the fallout as “embarrassing” after Southampton were expelled from the Championship playoffs following sanctions imposed by the EFL.

The Saints icon said supporters understood punishment was inevitable after the club admitted the charges, though he questioned whether the severity of the sanctions fully matched the offence.

Le Tissier acknowledged Southampton had fully cooperated with investigators and accepted wrongdoing.

However, he admitted his initial reaction was that the punishment felt severe.

“I certainly felt like the punishment seemed to be a little bit severe for the crime that was committed,” Le Tissier said.

Despite that, the former Southampton captain insisted the club ultimately had to accept responsibility.

“If you break the rules, then you have to suffer the consequences of that.”

The punishment saw Southampton lose their chance of promotion to the Premier League after being removed from the playoffs.

Le Tissier admitted the impact on supporters and players had been particularly painful.

Reputational Damage Could Impact Southampton’s Future

Le Tissier was particularly blunt when discussing the wider damage caused by the scandal.

When asked how badly Southampton’s reputation had been affected, he replied:

"Yeah, I mean, it's embarrassing. There's no two ways about that. For me now, the important thing is how we go about restoring our reputation, and I think that's got to be the main focus after all this."

The Saints legend warned rebuilding trust and credibility could take considerable time.

“It will be a long road. It’s not something that’ll be fixed very easily.”

Could Southampton Use ‘Siege Mentality’ Next Season?

Despite the negativity surrounding the situation, Le Tissier hinted the club may attempt to channel frustration into motivation next season.

He referenced the possibility of using a “siege mentality” approach often seen from managers during difficult periods.

"I mean, there's a whole raft of possibilities as to how players will feel, and I'm guessing they won't all feel the same. That's something the club will have to assess over the next few weeks and then obviously come up with a plan to go forward next season and actually try and get promoted again. Perhaps we try and use the siege mentality. We've seen many managers use those tactics before, so we'll come up with a plan going forward."

That strategy could become crucial if Southampton are to regroup quickly and mount another promotion challenge.

The club’s response over the coming weeks is likely to shape not only betting markets for next season’s Championship but also wider perceptions around Southampton’s long-term direction.
