  • From September 30, 2026, all licensed casino sites must present new players with a mandatory default deposit limit at registration, labelled clearly and given equal prominence to other financial controls on the site.
  • Under the new rules, only gross deposit limits - covering money paid in, not net of winnings - can officially be called "deposit limits."
  • Players can still adjust them freely, but requests to increase a limit above a set threshold may trigger a review using open banking or credit reference data

New rules on how licensed casino sites must present and manage deposit limits are set to come into force this autumn, it has emerged.

The UK Gambling Commission extended its original June 30 deadline to September 30, 2026, after operators flagged that some third-party platform providers had not completed the required technical and certification work in time.

It's worth pointing out that while the deadline has moved, the changes have not.

From September, every UKGC-licensed operator must present new players with a mandatory default deposit limit at registration.

That limit will apply to gross deposits - money paid in, rather than net of winnings.

Only this type of limit may carry the label "deposit limit" under the new standards.

Operators must display it with at least equal prominence to other financial controls on their site.

Players can still adjust their limits - but upward adjustments above a defined threshold will require a financial review, which may draw on open banking data or a credit reference check.

Operators must also send automated reminders every six months, prompting players to revisit their account settings.

What's changingWhat it means for players
Mandatory default deposit limit at registrationAll new players will be prompted to set a deposit limit when they sign up at any UKGC-licensed site
Gross deposits onlyLimits apply to money paid in, not net of winnings - giving a clearer picture of actual spending
Equal prominence requiredDeposit limits must be as visible as other financial controls - not buried in account settings
Upward adjustment reviewRequests to raise limits above a set threshold may trigger a check using open banking or credit data
Six-monthly remindersOperators must prompt players to review their limit settings every six months

Some casino sites are already meeting these standards ahead of the deadline.

OLBG's Casino Content Manager David Coleman believes the standardisation is long overdue.

He said: "The inconsistency has always been the problem. Some casino sites made deposit limits straightforward to find and manage. Others did not.

"These rules level the floor. Every player at every licensed site gets the same clear prompt when they register, and the same options if they want to make changes.

"For anyone who uses spending controls regularly, the difference will be noticeable. And for players who have never thought about deposit limits before, a prompt at registration is a far better introduction than finding out the hard way."

Feedback sessions with OLBG members show the September changes are being watched closely.

Casino sites that communicate the transition clearly are likely to see it reflected in how players rate their experience.
