English actors being received well on Broadway is not a new thing, of course, indeed, even in the short history of the Tony Awards, Basil Rathbone (1892-1967), South African born English Actor won a Tony Award in only the second awards show in 1948.

Since then a whole host of English and British actors have won including Dereck Jacobi, Richard Griffiths and Sir Alec Guinness; even James Corden who has been touted as Next Match of the Day presenter is on the list of previous winning British actors

English Actors and Actresses have always been busy and popular on Broadway and the 2021/22 season has been no different with Sharon D Clarke from Enfield as the favourite to win Best Actress in a Musical Award.

Both Simon Russel-Beale and Adam Godley have had previous nominations in this category, while Adrian Lester and David Threfall are enjoying their first.

Nominations mean little though, Donald Pleasence was nominated no fewer than four times but failed to pick up an award.

Where are the English Actors from?

Simon Russel Beale, now knighted and a Sir was actually born in Penang in Malaysia, Adam Godley who you may recognise from, Breaking Bad, Suits and films like Charlie and The Chocolate factory and Love Actually is from Amersham.

Adrian Lester hails from Birmingham and David Threlfall from Crumpsall in Manchester completes the lineup.

Actor Born Best Known For
Simon Russel Beale Penang, Malaysia Dunkirk 2004 - Winston Churchill
Adam Godley Amersham Love Actually & Suits
David Threlfal Crumpsall Manchester Shameless - Frank Gallagher
Adrian Lester Birmingham Hustle - Mickey Briggs
The UK is represented by no fewer than four of the seven nominations at the Tony Awards for Best Actor in a play on Broadway. Combining their chances according to bookmakers makes a 55% chance or odds of 1.80 that the award will be scooped by one of the English actors.
