From the Trading Desk: Punters Celebrate as Premier League Returns
The Premier League returned with a bang at the weekend and according to bet365’s Steve Freeth, the early winners weren’t on the pitch but among the punters.
Odds-on favourites Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Arsenal all landed, meaning a strong start to the season for customers with bet365.
Freeth admitted:
"The return of the Premier League had punters jumping for joy… the opening weekend belonged to the punters."
Early Payouts and Super Boosts Delight Punters
The season kicked off in style with bet365's 2 Goal Ahead Early Payout offer paying out after just 50 minutes for Liverpool thanks to Cody Gakpo’s strike.
A Super Boosted Hugo Ekitike shot on target at Evens instead of 2/5 also set the tone early.
But it wasn’t all one-way traffic for the bookies. A stoppage-time Mohamed Salah goal turned what could have been a decent result into a costly payout, compounded by Federico Chiesa scoring under the Sub On Play On offer.

Worst Result: Manchester City at Wolves
Freeth revealed that City’s win at Wolves was the bookie’s toughest result of the weekend.
Punters on Erling Haaland hat-trick bets might have felt frustrated when he was substituted on two goals, but replacement Rayan Cherki’s strike triggered another round of Sub On Play On concessions, hitting bet365 hard.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest’s early 3-0 lead against Brentford meant payouts before half-time for backers, while Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford also proved popular in Bet Builder markets.

Freeth said:
"Our worst result was Manchester City’s victory at Wolves. Ordinarily, backers of a Haaland hat-trick (14/1 best) would’ve been frustrated at the sight of the two-goal Norwegian being replaced by Rayan Cherki, but the Frenchman’s strike on 81 minutes meant we paid over a thousand wagers that would’ve been settled as losers thanks to the Sub concession and the Citizens scoring four goals tells its own story."
Tottenham’s Kudus Shines
Away from the weekend’s results, one of the biggest talking points was Tottenham’s new signing Mohammed Kudus, who impressed in the 3-0 win over Burnley.
Kudus created five chances and assisted both of Richarlison’s goals.
That performance saw him slashed from 80/1 into 16/1 to record the most assists in the Premier League this season.
With Kudus also sharing corner duties, Freeth expects his odds to shorten further if his form continues.
"Kudus is now 16/1 from 80/1 to finish with the Most Assists in the Premier League after his scintillating start and some of you will have also noticed that he was sharing corner duty with Pedro Porro which can only help in this market."
Big Movers Elsewhere
- Sunderland: Shortened from 15/1 into 8/1 in the pre-season handicap market with a 52-point start, while their Top Newcomer odds tumbled from 4/1 into 9/4.
- Tijjani Reijnders: After a goal and assist for Manchester City at Wolves, the Dutchman’s PFA Player of the Year odds were cut from 66/1 to 12/1.
