Are Mid-Tier Bookmakers Gaining Ground in 2026?

Punters have multiple betting accounts, and don't care about the size of the brand, as long as product is good.

With hundreds of different betting sites, finding the best can be confusing. I'll guide you through and find the most suitable bookie for you.

  • Mid-tier bookies appearing in our Top 10 ratings more and more.
  • Things like esports, specials, copy betting, or exchange betting are all areas where at OLBG we've seen mid-level bookies perform better.
  • With punters shopping for the best odds, the fastest withdrawals and specific offers, the bookies that offer them (regardless of size) are getting sign-ups.

We've been discussing payment methods, and withdrawal times, and how they influence bettors' behaviour. Shifting onto the operator side, I want to examine the operators that are closing the gap on the heavyweights.

Mid-tier bookmakers are gaining ground in 2026, but not overtaking the big names outright. Instead, they’re closing the gap by targeting specific niches, user experience, and pricing advantages. Let's get into it.

A Less Rigid Market

The UK remains very concentrated, with the top five operators (including bet365 and BetFred) controlling 75% of the market share. That's clearly a lot, but that does mean that the other 25% is up for grabs, and it's here where mid-sized operators are making moves.

At OLBG, we're coming across more and more bookies, constantly assessing their merits and demerits, and that's just the properly licensed UKGC ones (we'd never consider one that wasn't regulated, despite how many of them are out there).

These mid-tier bookmakers aren't just competing with the big boys, they winning in specific areas.

What we see, according to all the different data points that we use to grade UK bookies, is mid-tier bookies appearing in our Top 10 ratings more and more. Sites like SBK (Best for Politics, and and incredible app), talkSPORT BET (from the BetVictor family and great for football betting) and CopyBet (the no.1 bookie for Best Odds Guaranteed), are making waves in the space. You'll still see the likes of bet365, BetFred and William Hill top these lists often, but less than they used to.

Differentiation & Visibility

These mid-tier bookmakers aren't just competing with the big boys, they're winning in specific areas.

Some newer operators focus on sharper odds, running with lower margins, to provide better pricing and added value to bettors. Brands such as Midnite and SBK offer incredible, product-first apps. They have much cleaner interfaces versus some of the legacy bookmakers, and it is paying off. They also target areas that some big bookies may gloss over. Things like esports, specials, copy betting, or exchange betting are all areas where at OLBG we've seen mid-level bookies perform better.

The above is proof that these bookmakers are not being passive, aggressively gaining portions of the market.

We've seen them create heavy affiliate and SEO presence, making them easier for punters to find. They're offering very generous welcome offers, coupled with loyalty schemes and/or great retention models, to ensure customers stay. They're also investing more in sponsorships and media partnerships. Midnite, again, is a great example of this, as are BoyleSports, who invested £100 million into their UK expansion plans recently.

Multi Bookmaker Model

Most bettors now have multiple accounts, across various bookies, and that helps these mid-level bookies compete. With punters shopping for the best odds, the fastest withdrawals and specific offers, the bookies that offer them (regardless of size) are getting sign-ups. Modern bettors don't stay loyal to just one site. Even if they love it, and continue to use it, will still look for others if they can provide what they're after.

Bookies don't need to beat bet365, they just need to become a bookie that people use as well as bet365.

Ultimately, the 2026 market is seeing a redistribution of power. For bettors, consistency, value, UX and more all now carry as much weight as brand recognition. By refusing to settle for mediocrity and optimising every step of the user journey, mid-tier bookmakers are no longer just participants, in some instances, they're setting the trends for the entire industry.

On Friday, we assess whether newly launched bookmakers are successfully carving out competitive space in 2026.
