The Elite League, currently going under the name of Elite Ice Hockey League or EIHL for short, was created in 2003. Before that, it went under several other names like National League, Premier Division and Superleague.
The league is made up of ten teams from England (x5), Wales (x1), Scotland (x3) and Northern Ireland (x1), with the season being a triple round robin format, each team plays the other nine teams six times, three at home and three on the road, totalling 54 games each.
The top eight teams head to the playoffs with 1st vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th, 3rd vs 6th and 4th vs 5th in the quarter finals. The QFs are two games with the aggregate score being the deciding factor, and then the rest of the playoffs are one-off games.
In terms of the most successful British team, that accolade goes to Sheffield Steelers, who have won ten titles, but Belfast Giants, who have now won three of the last four, are closing in with eight titles.
