The Segunda Liga is the second tier of men's professional football in Portugal. Each season 18 teams compete for the Segunda Liga title over 34 game weeks, teams play each other once at home and once away.
The top two teams with the most points at the end of the Segunda Liga season are promoted to Portugal's top league, the Primeira Liga. The 3rd placed team in the Segunda Liga enters a promotion/relegation play-off with the 3rd bottom placed team in the Primeira Liga.
The two Segunda Liga teams with the least number of points are relegated to the 3rd tier of Portuguese football and the team finishing in 16th enters a relegation/promotion place play-off with the team finishing 3rd in Liga 3.
Many of the top clubs from Portugal like Benfica and Porto have reserve sides or a 'B' team and these play in the Segunda Liga. The 'B' teams cannot be promoted to the Primeira Liga however they could be relegated to the 3rd tier if the main side is relegated from the Primeira Liga.
