Who Will Be The Next Plymouth Argyle Manager

A list of the potential candidates should the job become available today based on previous people appearing in the betting odds when the position was vacant last time, to others who have a profile that would fit the club in terms of the last few managers they have had.

Antony Barry

Anthony Barry still needs to manage a club, but his CV is packed with prestigious Assistant Manager roles. He is currently working with Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich after spells as a coach at the Republic of Ireland Belgian and Portuguese national teams.

Liam Rosenior

Rosenior was sacked by Hull City after just missing out on the playoffs in the 2023/24 season. He looks like the perfect Argyle candidate to follow in the footsteps of Lowe and Schumacher.

Alex Neil

The Scot has managed five clubs with varying degrees of success. His best spells came at Norwich City and Sunderland where he guided those clubs into the playoffs.

Paul Heckingbottom

Most associated with clubs in the north of England, Heckingbottom was sacked by Sheffield United in December 2023. We suspect the Barnsley-born manager is actively looking for an appointment at  a Championship club

Nigel Pearson

If 60-year-old Nigel Pearson were to be appointed at Home Park, Argyle would be his tenth permanent managerial position.

Paul Cook

Paul Cook has an impressive CV, which was further enhanced when his Chesterfield side won promotion back to the Football League in the 2023/24 season.

Leighton Baines

Plenty of rumours arose ahead of Ian Foster's appointment that the former Everton and England full back was on his way to the West Country. Baines is currently in charge of the Everton Under 18 side.

Gareth Ainsworth

Ainsworth is a former Wycombe Wanderers and QPR manager who has a distinct managerial and playing style, it really depends which chairman and board buy into that approach.

Scott Parker

Image: Cosmin Iftode/ShutterstockThe former Fulham, Bournemouth and Club Brugge manager looks a good fit to carry on the work undertaken by Lowe and Schumacher. The 43-year-old Parker has twice promoted to the EPL, in  2020 with Fulham and in 2022 with Bournemouth.

Gus Poyet

Poyet was in charge of the Greek National side but was let go after missing out on Euro 2024 qualification.

Nathan Jones

The Welshman knows how to manage with him performing so well at Luton; however, away from Luton, he has struggled both at Southampton and with Stoke City. In February 2024 he became the latest Charlton Athletic manager.

Michael Duff

Michael Duff was sacked by Swansea after just six months in the position when results and the style of play did not meet expectations. Before that December 2023 dismissal, he had successful periods at both Cheltenham Town and Barnsley.

Michael Flynn

Michael Flynn has appeared in the next Plymouth Argyle manager betting odds on previous occasions. The Welsh born boss has been in charge at Newport County, Walsall and Swindon Town.

Mark Hughes

After a 500-game playing career, Hughes, who knew Schumacher from his Everton playing days, arrived at Home Park. When Assistant Manager Keith Downing left the West Country for Birmingham City, Hughes became the Assistant Manager, and as we know, did a great job in helping the club to win the title. Hughes followed Schumacher to Stoke City, but there may be a position for him back in the West Country at a future date.

Keith Downing

Downing was highly thought of at Plymouth Argyle, and the club plans could have been thrown off course when he left his Assistant Manager role at Home Park to team up with John Eustace at Championship side Birmingham City. He could be tempted back if the parties could sort out the travelling, which was ultimately why he returned to the Midlands. He is currently at Blackburn Rovers again with John Eustace.

Graham Coughlan

A Plymouth old boy who played over 170 games between 2001 and 2005. He was Vice Captain for some time and helped the club win Division Two and Division Three titles. Once Coughlan retired, he moved into management, and as of 2024, he was in charge of Newport County in League 2.
