With a bullfighting theme, the Wild Toro 3 slot follows on from various Wild Toro games, with the original title released in 2016. In this instalment, Toro returns to Spain after rivalling the Matador in Asgard and Egypt.

With his nephews (Los Toritos = little bulls) by his side, the premise is that Toro is preparing his nephews to carry on his legacy. However, the Matador feels threatened and calls in reinforcements. The setting is a typical southern Spanish village, where you’ll see traditional white houses, a bullring in the middle, mountains in the distance and clear blue skies. The soundtrack has a Flamenco feel and ties in with the Spanish setting.

On the reels, you’ll come across bronze, silver and gold coins, grapes, green prickly pears, oranges and red roses: the red rose is the best paying symbol, awarding 5 x your total bet for 5 in combination.

Wild Toro 3 comes with several wild symbols. There is a Toro Walking Wild, 3 Toritos sticky wilds and 3 Matador Wilds: substitutes for paying symbol, their functions are described below. There is also a Golden Rose that triggers the bonus game.

Toro Walking Wild

Look out for the Toro Walking Wild landing on reel 5. When he lands, the Toro Walking Wild moves left, awarding a respin and increasing his multiplier by 1 with every step (until spinning off reel 1). Only 1 Toro Walking Wild will appears on the reels at any time.

Toritos

Toro’s nephews, the Toritos, are sticky wilds that can appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. When a Toro Wild lands, they expand the height of the reels by 1, up to 7 rows:

• 4 rows: 178 paylines
• 5 rows: 259 paylines
• 6 rows: 340 paylines
• 7 rows: 421 paylines

Each Torito is a sticky wild and awards 1 respin. If multiple Toritos appear at the same time, only 1 respin is awarded. No respins will be awarded by Toritos if a Toro Walking Wild is present. With only 1 Torito Wild landing per reel, below is what they do when present with Toro:

• Blue Torito Wild, appearing on reel 2, scatters wilds on the reels
• Green Torito Wild, appearing on reel 3, doubles the Toro Walking Wild multiplier
• Red Torito Wild, appearing on reel 4, adds Toro’s multiplier to himself

Matadors & Toro Goes Loco

There are 3 Matador symbols that appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. All walking wilds that move left until they spin out on reel 1, they generate 1 respin for each step left.

When 1 or more Matadors appear with Toro, the Toro Goes Loco feature is triggered. Toro charges any Matadors in view with Toro moving vertically and then horizontally to knock all Matadors off the reels: this leaves wild symbols behind. Toro will attack all Matadors until all have been defeated. The 3 types of Matadors react differently though, before Toro charges:

• Regular Matador (blue): stays in place until Toro knocks him off the reels
• Coward Matador (green): moves to the edge of the leftmost or rightmost reel to increase the Toro charge
• Brave Matador (red): drops a Muleta wild that expands to take over the whole reel with a tall multiplier wild

Golden Rose Bonus

When Toro collects a Golden Rose during a base game spin, you’ll trigger the Golden Rose Bonus feature. Once in, you’ll see a 2x2 Toro symbol on a 5x7 grid, where only Golden Roses, Toritos, regular Matadors and blanks appear.

Once in, Toro begins with 3 lives with 1 life consumed for each drop. When at least 1 Matador lands, it resets Toro’s lives to 3. With Golden Roses landing with a value, the 3 Toritos act differently to the base game:

• Blue Torito: scatters extra Golden Roses on empty grid positions and/or increases the values of a number of existing Golden Roses before leaving the grid
• Green Torito: doubles the values of a number of existing Golden Roses before leaving the grid
• Red Torito: is replaced by a Golden Rose with the combined value of all existing Golden Roses

Additionally, Toro charges and knocks out any Matadors in view, collecting Golden Roses in Toro’s path. Their values are added to Toro’s win counter. Every Matador knocked out by Toro will add 1 token to a meter with 3 collected tokens doubling a global multiplier beginning at 1x. The meter is then reset.

Once all Matadors are knocked out, the value in Toro’s win counter is multiplied by the global multiplier. Toro’s win counter is then reset for the next spin.

With the Golden Rose Bonus feature ending once Toro is out of lives, you can trigger the feature several times. Each time you play the feature after the first time, the global multiplier from the previous feature is carried over.

X-iter

Finally, there is an X-iter feature, with 5 options:

• Bonus Hunt: Costing 2.5 x bet, you have 3 times the chance of triggering the Golden Rose Bonus feature.
• Mega Bonus Hunt: Costing 5 x bet, you have 6 times the chance of triggering the Golden Rose Bonus feature.
• Toro Goes Loco: Costing 25 x bet, you trigger the Toro Goes Loco feature.
• Bonus: Costing 100 x bet, you’ll trigger the Golden Rose Bonus feature.
• Super Bonus: Costing 250 x bet, you’ll trigger the Super Golden Rose Bonus feature with a higher starting multiplier or the Midnight Bullfight feature (depending on Day or Night mode)

With ELK Studios marking the 10^th anniversary of the first game, the Wild Toro 3 slot has kept true to its predecessors whilst adding in plenty of extras. The graphics, animations and sounds are superb: there’s a real southerly Spanish flavour which adds authenticity.  

The first thing you should do is decide which mode you want to play. The Night mode is more volatile but there is a chance you can trigger the Midnight Bullfight feature randomly. With expanding Muleta Wilds awarded, up to 5 multiplier wild reels like in Microgaming’s Immortal Romance and Thunderstruck 2.

In the base game, ELK has kept Toro Walking Wilds but with an increasing multiplier. They’ve added Toritos Wilds which expand the number of rows up to 7 for up to 421 paylines and award respins with various extras including wilds scattered on the reels, doubling of the Toro Walking Wild multiplier and adding Toro’s multiplier to the Red Torito Wild.

With 3 Matador walking wilds that award respins, the Toro Goes Loco feature is played when appearing with Toro: Toro charges any Matadors, leaving wilds in his path. Like the Toritos, the Matadors offer variation by moving to the edge of the reels for more wilds or dropping an expanding Muleta Wild.

Then you have the Golden Rose Bonus feature which is a Hold ‘n’ Win style feature with Toro mechanics incorporated. The Toritos play an important role as they add Golden Roses to the grid, double the values of some Golden Roses and add a Golden Rose with the combined value of all Golden Roses. To collect wins, Toro needs to charge at and knock out Matadors, collecting Golden Roses in his path. Every 3^rd Matador knock out fills the global multiplier and doubles it each time.

With 25,000 x bet max wins, Wild Toro 3 offers much higher win potential than its predecessors. In summary, ELK Studios has done a great job in keeping true to the original games and adding new mechanics and features to make it the best in the series by some distance.
