Like all classic Halloween scenes, Boo takes place in a misty graveyard in front of a creepy-looking haunted house. Other recognisable horror imagery includes bats, glowing pumpkins, burning candles covered in dripping wax and scarily large cobwebs.

When you trigger the Free Spins bonus round, the graveyard is bathed in eerie red hues.  Sound effects include crows cawing and the sounds of ghosts jumping out of the grid to shout boo before popping into thin air. The music is upbeat and fun with a Halloween twist.

On the grid, which is made up of a gravestone creative, there are different types of rather cute-looking ghosts which depict the higher-value symbols. Wild

The Wild symbol is depicted by a technicoloured ghost which you can see below and it substitutes for all symbols apart from a Scatter. These Wilds symbols appear on reels 2 - 4. In the base game, Wilds may reveal a multiplier of up to 4x. Wilds are multiplied by the displayed multipliers for each Wild that substitutes in the win.

Reactions

Here, each winning symbol explodes off the grid and is replaced by a Scatter, Ghost or Wild symbol. Every new winning combo triggers a reaction until there are no new wins.

Free Spins

3 or more Pumpkin Scatters trigger the Free Spins bonus round, where you’ll receive 12 free spins. Each of the 16 grid positions has a multiplier which persists and may grow throughout the Free Spins round. 

Every time there is a win with Ghost symbols or Wilds in an initial free spin, one or more of the winning positions will have their multipliers increase. The increase is either a random +1, +2 or +3.  At the start of the free spins bonus round, one or more positions that held the triggering scatters get multipliers starting at either 2x, 3x, or 4x. All of the other positions begin on 1x.

During the Free Spins, 3 or more Scatters award an additional 3 free spins and increase the multiplier on one of the positions between 1x and 3x. Multipliers only apply to Ghost symbols and Wilds. All wins are multiplied by the multipliers displayed on each Ghost and Wild present in that win.

This Big Time Gaming release is set to launch just in time for Halloween 2024, perfectly capturing the season of trick-or-treating, sugary sweets, and overpriced pumpkins. With an RTP of 96.54% and a maximum win of 47,050x, it offers a promising foundation.

However, the design lacks originality, relying on standard Halloween imagery without anything to differentiate it which is a shame. In terms of features, the Free Spins round stands out, offering a solid 12 spins with multipliers that can be quite rewarding. Each of the 16 grid positions comes with a multiplier that either stays the same or increases throughout the Free Spins round. At the start, positions that held the triggering scatters get multipliers ranging from 2x to 4x, while the others start at 1x. You can boost these multipliers further with wins involving Ghost or Wild symbols.

Another nice touch is the Reactions feature, which replaces winning symbols with higher-value scatter, ghost, or wild symbols, which makes this cascade type of mechanic even better.

The features are entertaining, and the max win and RTP are excellent, but the creatives let this game down, so I’m giving it a 4 out of 5 score. It doesn't quite make our list of the best Halloween slot games which are much more terrifying and stand out in terms of gameplay.
