The Blood and Shadow slot is the dark sequel to Nolimit City's popular Book of Shadows slot. While the original game revolved around a book of magical enhancements, Blood and Shadow takes inspiration from Gerald Brosseau Gardner's famous Neopagan Book of Shadows, a publication of ancient rituals.

As you play, you’ll enter the eerie ruins of an abandoned cathedral, bathed in an ominous red glow from the blood moon, which rises during a total lunar eclipse. According to NLC, this shadowy place harbours a dark mist ‘where the underworld roams free and immortality beckons’. 

At the heart of the game is the enigmatic Shadow Girl, with her glowing red eyes. After mastering the forbidden arts, she has unlocked a ritual for eternal youth, preparing to perform it beneath the sinister blood moon. The whole scene is brought to life in the setting of the gloomy, ghoulish, abandoned cathedral. The cathedral is stuffed with cobweb-covered ritual objects of skulls and candles ready for the ceremony.

Be on the lookout for the impressive animations between rounds, especially during big wins. The haunting cathedral lights up with eerie red glows, satanic books are revealed, and sinister music intensifies the atmosphere. 

The soundscape is equally chilling, with the echo of empty cathedral halls and the eerie whistle of wind flowing through the shadows. Bonus rounds are accompanied by a creepy choral soundtrack, but perhaps the most unsettling sound is the squelching sound of a heart exploding during the Ritual Bar feature !

On the reels are beautifully designed illustrations in muted natural shades of grey,  brown, stone, and green, which are a great contrast to the greys and blacks of the cathedral. There are also touches of blood red all over the creatives. I guess in interior design speak this would be the 'accent shade'! It gives the setting an extra layer of gore.

Tumble

When a win takes place, the winning symbols explode off the grid in a haze of red blood and are replaced by new symbols from above, which gives you more opportunities to win. The tumbling feature continues until there are no more wins.

Sticky Wilds

Reels  2, 3, 4 and 5 are where Sticky Wilds can land. During the Candle Spins and Cursed Spins the wild drops down to the bottom of the reel and becomes a Sticky Wild, until it is either part of the winning combo or a new bet is made.

Ritual Bar

The Ritual Bar is below the bottom row, and it fills up with blood to represent your progress. You fill it by winning combos of medium-value symbols, high-value symbols and heart scatters. Here is what each type of symbol brings:

• +1 per winning symbol: medium value symbols
• +2 per winning symbol: high-value symbols
• +10 per scatter symbol: heart scatters only

There are 5 levels of progression and the Ritual Bar resets for each level-up. Any extra points are carried over to the next level. Each level removes the lowest-paying symbol and also converts medium symbols to high paying symbols. Here is the amount of points needed per level:

• Level 1 – 20 points
• Level 2 – 30 points
• Level 3 – 40 points
• Level 4 – 60 points
• Level 5 – 80 points

Candle Spins 

Reaching a new level of the Ritual Bar awards you 2 more Candle Spins until you reach level 4. Another 6 free spins are awarded if you progress to the Cursed Spins, which is explained below.

Cursed Spins

When you reach level 5 you trigger the Cursed Spins and the Ritual Bar is removed from the grid, and you play on 5 rows rather than 4, which extends the ways to win up to 3,125. In addition to this, only high-value symbols appear on the grid. If you land a heart scatter, you will be awarded with 1 extra free spin.

This Cursed Spins feature is where NLC’s famous xSplit feature kicks in. If this lands it does one of two things it either splits the row or reel, or alternatively, it splits any symbols and multiplies the symbol size by 2x.
