An interesting game from Pragmatic Play and this test was undertaken pre-release, so was done in demo mode. But what a session - a huge bonus round achieved on spin 40 paid a whopping 216.35x and contributed to an overall session RTP of way above average at 216.35%

If that wasn't enough the win frequency was high at 28 from 100, and the average winning spin value was 7.72x, obviously inflated by the bonus win - With the bonus round removed it does show a much lower 1.36 which is something to be mindful of.

I'm writing this review in mid-December and I've been testing out all sorts of Christmas slot games so this title feels about as far removed from that genre as possible. As soon as you launch the game you are hit with fanged characters including a spooky skeleton and ghoulish demon. The story is set in a grand, creepy lair bursting with skulls and buckets of gloopy blood.

As well as the Multiplier Symbols mentioned in the summary, there is also a fun Free Spins bonus round where multipliers also play a part. They add x1 or x2 the value and you can also trigger another free spin round if you trigger Scatters.

Graphics, Music, and Sound Effects

The graphics in Blade & Fangs are high res and show a gruesome scene of a chamber, illuminated only by candles. There is also some kind of grinding machine covered in blood. The look is complete with a covering of human skulls on the floor - yuck.

The music and sound effects are suitably creepy and suit the macabre setting. You'll hear music that wouldn't be out of place in a Hollywood horror film set in hell. Sound effects include creepy laughs and the sound of metal being hit. During the bonus round, the tension builds up and you can hear heavy metal guitar music in the background as well as the creatures on the reels making angry noises plus the sound of a knife slashing at the reels. 

The horror chamber where the game takes place is suitably scary and sets the scene well. The room is set in nighttime so the only light is from candles and fireflies. The human skulls are piled up on the floor so this is probably not the game for you if you prefer unicorns and kittens. During the bonus round, you see some kind of monster trying to escape from a dungeon on the floor - maybe he's the leader of this gang of fanged creatures.

The grid is made up of the merciless grinding machine, cutting features heavily and you see a blade move across the standard symbols on the reels. In order of highest value first, the special symbols are a skeleton, werewolf, demon, serpent and bat. The standard symbols are designed in a metal style and are soaked in blood and are  A, K, Q, J and 10.

Reels

During the base game, you'll play on two 5x3 grids and these will then be merged to a 6x5 grid during the bonus round.

Play Experience & First Impressions

The imagery and music create an immersive slot experience. The Free Spins round was easy to follow and kept to a simple theme of multipliers and extra free spins. 

The multipliers were the other headline feature and they worked again with 1x and 2x.  The 1x multiplier appears on reel 1 of the top screen in the base game the 2x multiplier appears on reel 5 of the bottom screen. Whenever both Multiplier Symbols hit at the same time the two screens merge into s single 6x5 grid and a repsin is awarded. For the respin, a multiplier of 2x that applies to all wins is awarded to you. In the respin, if a 1x multiplier symbol hits the general multiplier it increases by 1x. If a 2x multiplier hits, the general multiplier is multiplied by 2x. At the end of the respin, all wins are multiplied by the general multiplier. Once the respin has finished the game splits back to two 5x3 screens.

Blade & Fangs has a strong story and characters which worked well for a game in the horror genre. It is darker than most of Pragmatic Play's recent games so this was a refreshing change. However, I found the use of 2 grids didn't bring much to the table. The game itself was dark however the features were light - maybe this is why the 2 grids didn't particularly stand out. There are only free spins and multipliers to tell you about which isn't a great deal in the grand scheme of things. Simple games are usually better but this title was a bit too simple. 

There were a couple of odd moments too such as the win messages that pop up. These showed the traditional slot imagery of coins spilling out of the screen and cheesy gameshow music from the 90s. This goes against the horror theme somewhat -maybe they didn't have enough time to match the messaging to the horror theme. The RTP at 96.05% was average and the max win was again pretty average at 5,000x but they are not the lowest I've seen. I enjoyed the theme and story - maybe it was a break from all of the festive cheese. It was enjoyable but there's not enough to bring me back to play again. However,  if you fancy something a bit darker it's worth a spin.
