  • Francis II remains favourite to be the Papal name of the next Pope

Mark Ouellet and Luis Antonio Tagle are the 7/1 joint favourites to be the next Pope

The betting market for the next Pope remains available and Mark Ouellet and Luis Antonio Tagle stay at the top of the odds.

Bookmakers make the duo 7/1 joint favourites at the top of the betting with the market unable to split the two and pick an outright favourite.

Cardinal Luis Tagle, or Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle to give him his full name, has been an outright favourite in the betting market for months now and that doesn't look like changing.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet actually retired back in January but this hasn't stopped bookmakers from offering odds of him being Pope still.

Next Pope After Francis I Odds Probability
Cardinal Luis Tagle (Philippines) 7/1 12.5%
Cardinal Marc Ouellet (Canada) 7/1 12.5%
Cardinal Peter Erdo (Hungary) 10/1 9.1%
Archbishop Angelo (Italy) 10/1 9.1%
Cardinal Cristoph Schonborn (Austria) 12/1 7.7%
What the expert says..
Luis Tagle and Marc Oullet remain joint favourites to be the next Pope with bookmakers giving each of them a 12.5% chance!

Former favourite Peter Turkson drifts right out to 66/1 in the betting market

Cardinal Peter Turkson has long been near the top of the betting market to be the Next Pope but he's since drifted right out to 66/1.

Turkson would be the first black Pope if he was chosen next and he has regularly been mentioned in the past as a major player to take over from Francis.

The latest odds though suggest there's a slim chance of that happening with the implied probability now at 1.5% that he is next Pope.

Francis II remains favourite to be the Papal name of the next Pope

More betting markets are available around the next Pope with the next Papal name also an interesting one to see what name the next Pope will have.

The latest odds say that we'll see another Francis next with Francis II the favourite in the betting at 5/4 ahead of other contenders.

Of course Francis is the current Pope and it remains unclear how long he will remain in that role with only up to 10 Popes in history likely to have retired.

Papal Name of Next Pope Odds Probability
Francis 5/4 44.4%
John Paul 7/1 12.5%
Leo 8/1 11.1%
Benedict 12/1 7.7%

The most common names used by Popes are:

  • Gregory (16)
  • Benedict (16)
