  • She would be the Youngest female winner since HRH Princess Anne won in 1971 aged 21
  • She could break the Olympian strangle hold on the trophy in an Olympic year
500/1 to Win Sports Personality of the Year 3 weeks ago and unconsidered for the US Open, Emma Raducano is now favourite not only to win in New York but also to win the annual TV Award from under the nose of Tom Daley

Emma Raducanu has not only just played her way into the US Open Tennis Final she has at the same time gone from a totally unconsidered, and let's be honest, unknown 500/1 shot to win Sports Personality of the Year to the 11/10 favourite when checking the odds on betting sites.

The British teenager has rather grabbed the world's attention since her meteoric performances in New York and is now favourite in the betting to win the Sports Personality of the Year Award on 12th December.

Bookmakers have increased her chance of winning from 0.20% before the US Open to 63%% prior to meeting Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the final.

Sports Personality of the Year Award Betting Odds

Nominee Odds Probability
Emme Raducanu 4/7 63.69%
Tom Daley 11/8 42.19%
Jason Kenny 11/2 15.38%
Adam Peaty 13/2 13.33%
Lewis Hamilton 9/1 10%

**Probability percentage figures include bookmakers overround - odds correct at 10/9/2021

The teenager is 11/10 to win SPOTY after reaching the final. Should she beat Fernandez, and is favourite to do so, her odds with bookmakers to win the TV prize will instantly shorten and almost certainly go odds-on.

Daley Missing Out Again?

This looks for all the world like it was going to be the year Tom Daley finally added to his three Young Sports Personality of the Year awards with the main honour after winning gold in the 10m syncro diving in Tokyo this summer.

As soon as he won gold, he shot to the top of the betting for the prize and has held fast there ever since despite other gold-winning performances from Jason and Laura Kenny in the Velodrome and Adam peaty in the pool.

Olympians have a strong hold on SPOTY in Olympic years, winning every time since Steve Redgrave in 2000 but it looks like the tennis teenager, who only just qualifies for the main award having turned 18 just 2 months before the deadline, is going to scoop the prize.

Odds On to Win Us Open now

Emma Raducanu just keeps serving up the shocks and delivered again by taking out the Greek Sakkari in the Semi-Final, but there was also a shock in the other match where Leylah Fernandez defeated number 2 seed Aryla Sabalenka to also reach the final.

The upshot of that is now we have a British woman favourite to win the US Open. Had Sabalenka won, Raducanu would not have been favoured for the title.

To Win US Open

Player Odds Probability
Emma Raducanu 1.69 63.69%
Leylah Fernandez 2.42 41.32%

**Probability percentage figures include bookmakers overround - odds correct at 10/9/2021

Canada

In an interesting twist, she now faces Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the final of the Tennis.

Should her incredible run come to an end and she finished runner up, Raducanu will still remain favourite to win SPOTY, but a win would almost make her a certainty.

And should she win Sports Personality of Year she would not be the first Canadian-born tennis player to win the award, but she would join Greg Rusedski who won in 1997.

Should Emma Raducano go on to win at Flushing Meadows and subsequently win the Sports Personality of year Award, she would not be the first Canadian Born British tennis player to win - That title goes to Greg Rusedski from 1997.

Youngest SPOTY winner

Emma Raducanu does not qualify for the Young Sports Personality of the Year award as she was 18 on the 1st of January this year but will become the youngest winner of the main award since the 'Young' award was separated in 1999.

She will become the youngest female winner of the award, however, usurping the previous owner of the title, HRH Princess Anne who won in 1971 at the age of 21.

The youngest-ever winner of the award goes to Swimmer Ian Black who was just 17 when winning in 1958
