It is hard to argue that since the great Lester Piggot flat horse racing in the UK, and indeed the world, has had one outstanding personality to has just about achieved it all, and then some - Stand up, or flying dismount - Frankie Dettori.
Now 51 years old, and looking at just his GB rides, he amassed between 1988 and 2021, no fewer than 3291 winning rides from 16684 mounts and a win strike rate of 19.73% - That's pretty impressive and of course includes winning all seven races on Champions Day at Ascot back in 1996 when cleaning out the bookies and even putting some of them out of business.
Dettori is now into his 52nd year and is still going strong with no plans of retirement, which is probably why the bookmakers are offering odds as big as 5/1 for him to announce retirement this year.
Last year he was quoted when questioned about retirement that he had no plans for a date to stop rising.
“At the moment it (retirement) is not on my mind. I still enjoy what I’m doing. Health-wise I’m still pretty good and I’m pretty fit. I have no intention of stopping - I haven’t put a date or time on it, I don’t know, but at the moment I’m still enjoying it.
