  • Wagering requirements capped at 10 x the bonus amount from January 2026
  • Gambling promotions must apply to a single product type and cannot change once conditions are met
  • VIP and high-value incentives must be offered responsibly and in line with player protection rules

Gambling bonuses and promotions offered to UK players will change from Monday 19th January 2026. The Gambling Commission has introduced new rules designed to make offers fairer, clearer, and easier to understand.

Changes apply to most gambling operators, including online betting, casino and slot sites and affect any promotion where customers can receive a benefit such as bonus money, free bets, or other rewards, such as free spins.

One of the biggest changes is a new limit on wagering requirements. From Monday, gambling sites will not be allowed to offer wagering requirements of more than 10x before winnings can be withdrawn. This is intended to stop excessively high play-through requirements that can make bonuses difficult or misleading to cash out.

What are Wagering Requirements?
Wagering requirements (also known as play through requirements) dictate how many times you need to stake or play your bonus or free spins before you can cash out winnings or the actual bonus amount.

You should also find promotions simpler. Operators will no longer be allowed to bundle different types of gambling products, such as betting, casino games, bingo, and lotteries, into a single bonus. This means offers must be clearer about what type of gambling players apply to.

The new rules also prevent operators from changing the value of a bonus or its conditions if a player completes the qualifying activity faster than expected. This is aimed at ensuring players receive exactly what was originally promised.

In addition, incentives involving free or discounted travel or accommodation must not be linked to how much a customer is expected to gamble at a venue, reducing the risk of offers encouraging excessive spending.

Special bonuses aimed at so-called VIP or high-value customers will also be more tightly controlled. These offers must be made responsibly and in line with gambling regulations designed to protect players.

The Gambling Commission says the changes are part of wider efforts to make gambling safer and more transparent, giving players clearer information and better protection when deciding whether to take up a bonus or promotion.

These changes will better protect consumers from gambling harm and give consumers much better clarity on, and certainty of, offers before they decide to sign up.

What This Means For You

  • Lower wagering requirements: You won’t have to gamble bonus funds more than 10 times before you can withdraw winnings
  • Clearer offers: Bonuses will apply to one type of gambling only, making terms easier to understand.
  • No surprise changes: Operators can’t reduce or change a bonus just because you meet the conditions quickly.
  • Fewer pressure incentives: Travel or accommodation offers can’t be linked to how much you’re expected to gamble.
  • More protection for VIP players: High-value bonuses must be offered responsibly, not as encouragement to gamble more.
