  • Stephanie Wilson is now the 9/2 favourite to be the first woman to walk on the moon
  • Artemis is due to be the first program aiming to land on the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972
  • NASA's short-term goal for the program is landing the first woman and first person of colour on the Moon

Stephanie Wilson is now the 9/2 favourite to be the first woman to walk on the moon

After a successful mission for Artemis 1, it looks like we're one step closer to a manned crew walking on the moon again at some point in the near future.

The unmanned journey made a successful trip around the moon and completed a 25-day journey where it broke the Apollo 13 record of furthest distance travelled by a spacecraft designed to carry human astronauts.

Bookies are already giving odds on the first woman to walk on the moon with the Artemis program aimed at having that come to fruition.

The 9/2 favourite in the betting is Stephanie Wilson who is NASA’s most senior, most flown-in-space African American female astronaut.

First Woman To Walk On The Moon Odds Probability
Stephanie Wilson 9/2 18.2%
Kayla Barron
5/1 16.7%
Nicole Mann
5/1 16.7%
Christina Koch 11/2 15.4%
Anne McClain 6/1 14.3%
Stephanie Wilson's experience at NASA has instantly put her into favourite to be the first woman to walk on the moon. NASA are expected to pick their crew for the next Artemis program at some point in 2023.

Artemis is due to be the first program aiming to land on the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972

Artemis 1 was the first flight in the Artemis program that will see NASA head back to the Moon for the first time since 1972.

The program kicked off with Artemis 1 which was unmanned and flew in the orbit of the Moon without landing.

The success of this mission should keep Artemis 2 on track for the May 2024 date for its departure.

NASA have highlighted what the Artemis 1 mission will look like below:

NASA's short-term goal for the program is landing the first woman and first person of colour on the Moon

The number one target for NASA is to land the first woman and person of colour on the moon after years of diversity issues within the organisation.

NASA hope that Artemis will allow people to see a brand new era of travel in space with a variety of different people on the mission.

The medium goal is to eventually have a sustainable human presence actually on the moon with pods for people on there, with 2030 mooted as the date that Astronauts will live and work on the moon by.

The Artemis program will hopefully be a massive step forward in terms of space travel for the planet.
