I've spent over 20 years inside the betting industry. I'll guide you to avoid the hype, ignore the noise, and steer clear of the common pitfalls that catch out everyday punters.

  • Smarkets Exchange offers betting on who replaces Cressida Dick as MET Police Commissioner.
  • Retired Dame Lynne Owens is the favourite at this stage with a 25% chance of landing the top job
  • Neil Bassu is around 4/1 with betting sites and will be looking for a green light from the Government

Following the resignation of Cressida Dick from the position of Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, speculation has begun as to who will fill the role from a list of candidates.

We can always rely on SMarkets exchange to be one of the first betting sites with odds available on a list of potential replacements, so let's have a look at who are the favourites in this particular race.

Next MET Police Commissioner Betting Odds

Candidate Odds Probability
Lynne Owens 4.10 24.39%
Neil Basu 5.20 19.23%
Simon Byrne 6.60 15.15%
Ben-Julian Harrington 7.40 13.51%
Martin Hewitt 8.80 11.36%
Mark Rowley 9.00 11.11%

Main Candidates

Dame Lynne Owens is a former Exter University Student and former Chief Constable for Surrey and assistant commissioner of the MET before retiring last year on health grounds.

Despite her personal troubles, she has been tipped as a strong candidate as a favourite of Priti Patel and has been installed as the beating favourite.

Smarkets betting exchange has installed Dame Lynne Owens, Neil Basu and Simon Byrne as the betting favourites to become the new MET police Commissioner.

Neil Basu looks an obvious choice as a lifetime server in the MET and is a favourite of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, but he doesn't;t have the cosiest relationship with No10 or Priti Patel in particular.

Simon Byrne from Epsom in Surrey has Met experience having served as assistant commissioner for territorial policing before moving to the Police Service of Northern Ireland and Chief Constable position.

The betting list is not exhaustive and there are very many potential candidates, so it will be interesting to how accurate the bookmakers predicted probabilities are when the new commissioner is announced.

When Will it Happen

We can not be sure when the appointment will be made, The Queen has to formally appoint the successful candidate on the advice of the Home Secretary with guidance from the Mayor of London.

Sadiq Khan is cited as forcing Cressida Dick's decision to step down after providing no confidence in her position, and whilst she has made a formal resignation she is believed to be staying on for a 'few weeks' until a suitable replacement is chosen.

Expect a formal appointment of the New Met Police Commissioner by the Queen in a few weeks after Priti Patel makes the call with guidance from Lord Mayor Khan.
