Match Preview

Hello relegation zone, our old friend. Following three straight losses, the Swans are back in the bottom-three with the biggest game of the season on the horizon.

Swansea City AFC logo We host Southampton on Tuesday, with the Saints sitting 17th thanks to a better goal difference. It really will be like a winner takes all match at the Liberty.

A recent four-match winning streak at home will give confidence that it's possible to bag all the points, but the performance has to be better than it has been in recent outings. Especially offensively.

We sit on a seven-match winless run and four of the games have ended without a single goal scored, so you don't have to look far to find the reason why the team has started to struggle.

FC Southampton logo The Saints have just one win in their last 10, so Mark Hughes' side isn't in better form either. The game will be decided by who gets the gameplan right.

Hughes got his first win as Southampton boss in the derby against Bournemouth, and they were really close to consecutive wins at the weekend, but a fluke goal in injury time by Everton left everything to play for Tuesday night.

Southampton have been among the worst traveling sides in the league this season, so the chance is there to climb out of the relegation zone ahead of the final game of the year.

Team and Injury News

Leroy Fer, Wilfried Bony, and Kyle Bartley are out. Kyle Naughton should return from an illness.

Steven Davis is a major doubt for Soton, with Mario Lemina very likely to miss the match after picking up a hamstring problem against Everton. Maya Yoshida is suspended after getting sent off at the weekend. Sofiane Boufal recently had a bust-up with Hughes and likely won't be involved.

Predicted Line Up and Formation

Three points is a must here, so I'm hoping Carvalhal will abandon his five-man defensive scheme. He actually was a 4-4-2 guy at Sheffield, and it would be great to see him rekindle the old flame.

Swansea: 4-4-2

  1. Fabianski

  2. Naughton

  3. Fernandez

  4. Mawson

  5. Olsson

  6. A. Ayew

  7. King

  8. Ki

  9. Clucas

  10. J. Ayew

  11. Abraham

Substitutes: Nordfeldt, van der Hoorn, Rangel, Sanches, Carroll, Dyer, Narsingh

Hughes has had some success recently with the 3-4-2-1 formation, so we can expect him to continue with it.

Southampton: 3-4-2-1

  1. McCarthy

  2. Bednarek

  3. Stephens

  4. Hoedt

  5. Cedric

  6. Romeu

  7. Ward-Prowse

  8. Bertrand

  9. Tadic

  10. Redmond

  11. Austin

Substitutes: Forster, Pied, McQueen, Hojbjerg, Long, Gabbiadini, Carrillo

Key Match Statistics

Swansea have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last four home matches against Southampton

Scoring some goals will be vital here, with our poor defensive record against the Saints one of the reasons why. We managed a clean sheet against them in the reverse fixture, but were totally dominated in the match and keeping Southampton at bay on home turf has been rare. It hasn't happened since the first ever Premier League meeting in 2013.

Southampton have won just one of their last 16 away games

As noted, Soton doesn't really enjoy away days. They are currently on a run of just one away win in last 16 league outings. There have been a couple of decent draws recently at Leicester and Everton, but overall the results have been ugly on the road.

Key Player

Andre Ayew still hasn't scored a single goal since his return, which is a disappointment, but he's looked lively and energetic. Now would be the perfect time to put the ball into the back of the net.

Charlie Austin has seven league goals in just eight starts this season. He's a very dangerous striker when fit.

Fan Prediction

The backs are against the wall, so there are no excuses here. The team should be fully motivated in front of a rocking home crowd, so I believe the win is achievable here.
