In the round prior to that, Stearns had beaten 15th seed Amanda Anisimova. The American's best performances of the season came in the Italian Open last month when she beat Madison Keys, Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina on her way to a semi-final appearance. Laura Siegmund started 2025 well enough when reaching the third round of the Australian Open. However, seven defeats in her next nine matches, mostly in tournament qualifying, saw her drop out of the world's top 100 going into the Italian Open, which she started well until withdrawing injured before her last 32 match with Jelena Ostapenko. There's nothing that stands out to suggest one of these will take to the grass surface better, but with Stearns seemingly a player that is imminently going to break into the top 32 (she's currently No.35 in the world) and Siegemund in the twilight of her career at 37 years old and sliding down the rankings, I certainly favour Peyton here.
