I think the bumper is the most interesting race on this very average-looking card at Newcastle. Nicky Richards, as shrewd a trainer as there is, has booked the very talented Rian Corcoran to ride the newcomer, Lady Walk On Bye. The trainer is well capable of getting one ready first time out, and this mare falls into that category.

Rainbow Tara stayed on well in a junior bumper at Cheltenham last April when trained by Toby Bulgin. She then switched to Dan Skelton and was slightly disappointing when only a well-beaten 2nd at Uttoxeter in December, but she has had wind surgery since and could win at Newcastle.

This is obviously hugely speculative, but at 50/1 I can't resist a little bet on this one. The trainer is one that has both a career-level stakes profit at the course and the same with his bumper runners, which is really rare. The 7 lb claiming conditional booked is one that I like, and he also shows a profit on his career rides. The horse itself is a half-sister to the useful Shades of Midnight, which won a hurdles race off 141 and got within half a length of Paisley Park in another race. There's no doubt she could finish stone last, but hopefully there'll be some market support to suggest otherwise.
