Ballybreeze looks the one to beat here, despite a couple of underwhelming recent efforts that came with valid excuses. Last time out, he was beaten over 2m 3½f on soft ground, a trip and condition that may not have suited. Prior to that, he ran in a strong Class 3 handicap at Cheltenham over 2m on soft, finishing sixth, beaten 20 lengths in a 0??'140. That race has worked out well, with winner Triple Trade now rated 129 and runner-up Torneo rated 125 over fences. He returns here to a more suitable setup. Notably, he won over course and distance at Chepstow around this time last year off 113 in a Class 3 handicap (0??'130). Although that came in a small field, he had previously won at Newbury by 4¼ lengths in a stronger race, with the runner-up now rated 135, giving that form real substance. Now dropped 3 lb to a mark of 112, and back over 2 miles on better ground, conditions look ideal. With proven class at this level and a return to more favourable circumstances, he sets a solid standard in this field.
