Ukrainian Premier League Format and Past Winners
The Ukrainian Vyscha Liga or Ukraine Premier League is the top-tier football league in Ukraine. Formed in 1991 after Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union, the Ukraine Vyscha Liga format changed in 2008 along with the league title.
Twelve teams compete in the regular season playing each other once home and away. After the regular season has finished the league is split into two groups of six teams, the top six form the Championship Group and the bottom six the Relegation Group.
The teams in each group play each other home and away once, a "Golden Match" is played to decide the league champions if the top two teams in the Championship group finish with the same points.
The Ukrainian champions qualify for the following season's UEFA Champions League Group Stage, the runners-up go into the Champions League third qualifying round, and the 3rd placed team go into the Europa League Third Qualifying Round.
Tavriya Simferopol won the first Ukraine Vyscha Liga title in 1992, but since then, either Dynamo Kyiv or Shakhtar Donetsk have been crowned champions.
