Portuguese Primeira Liga Format & Previous Winners

Each season 18 teams compete for the Primeira Liga title over 34 game weeks. The Primeira Liga was founded in 1934 and is top of the Portuguese football pyramid, just above the LigaPro.

Teams from the Primeira Liga also compete in the Taca de Portugal and Taca de Liga which are the equivalents of the English FA Cup and English League Cup.

Benfica is the most successful team in Primeira Liga history and is still a consistent Primeira Liga winner and contender each season. Benfica also tends to be the best-supported club in Portugal with the largest attendance.

Attendance-wise it is the big 3 (Porto and Sporting Lisbon also included) who attract by far the biggest crowds in the Primeira Liga.

Currently, the Primeira Liga winners go straight into the Champions League group stage whilst the runners-up from the Primeira Liga enter the Champions League at the qualification stage.
