WWE Survivor Series Preview

Considered to be part of the "Big Five" in the WWE universe, the Survivor Series is the second longest-running PPV with only Wrestlemania which debuted in 1985 longer running.

Survivor Series was introduced in 1987 with the 2022 event which was the 36th edition, it was rebranded as "WarGames".

Boston first hosted the Survivor Series in 1993 at the Boston Garden when the All-Americans took on the Foreign Fanatics in the main event.

The Bostonians had to wait till 2008 to host again, this time at the TD Garden which hosted the championship bout between the defending champion Chris Jericho and the challenger John Cena.

Just five years later in 2013, Survivor Series returned to Boston and the TD Garden with the main event seeing the Big Show take on the reigning champion Randy Orton.

What are WarGames matches?

The 2022 Survivor Series was rebranded to feature WarGames matches for both men and women but some of you will not be familiar with what a WarGame match is so here is an explanation.

Everyone would have seen a 'Cage Match', well this is what a WarGame match is but to the extreme, instead of a cage round just the single ring, here we will have two rings, side-by-side enclosed by a steal cage!

Why does it need to be this big? Because there will be eight to ten wrestlers taking part which will be either four-on-four or five-on-five matches.

WarGames was a WCW creation that was taken on by the WWE in 2001 when buying the WCW assets and there has already been WarGames in the WWE.

"The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes is the man responsible for the creation of this match and since 2017 there have been annual WarGames on NXT TakeOver, the 2022 Survivor Series was the first time on one of the main WWE platforms.

WWE Survivor Series History

When was the 1st Survivor Series?

The first ever Survivor Series took place on the 26th of November 1987 at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio, a host who also hosted it a year later too.

The main event was a five-on-five elimination match which saw André the Giant, Butch Reed, King Kong Bundy, One Man Gang, and Rick Rude team up to take on Bam Bam Bigelow, Don Muraco, Hulk Hogan, Ken Patera, and Paul Orndorff.

André the Giant was the sole survivor of the match after pinning Bam Bam Bigelow to secure victory.

What are the Survivor Series Teams?

There have been lots of different teams facing off against each other as the main event over the years, the first official matchup with team names was the All-Americans against the Foreign Fanatics in 1993.

There has since been Team WWF vs Team Alliance in 2001 and in 2004 Team Orton took on Team Triple H. In 2014 John Cena put together a Team Cena to take on Team Authority.

Team Raw vs Team Smackdown is now the traditional five-on-five elimination match, however, that has only headlined two Survivor Series, first in 2005 and then again in 2017 with the main event more often than not a singles match.
