This looks a pretty open race, but Vol Royal has won both times he has run in hurdle races at Hereford, both ridden by Harry Cobden, who rides again. He has run down the field at Chepstow a couple of times, but that course is a specialist track and obviously didn't suit.

Carlton is the odds-on favorite here, but he finishes placed a lot, which suggests he is one-paced. I won't be backing him at those odds. Ikigai Star has won three times, and two of those wins were at this course. He has had a decent break and wind surgery. I feel they would not bring him back to the track he is most successful at if he needed a run.

I like Eton Mes in this. He has won a couple of races on heavy and soft going, but his action is that of a good-ground horse. I think that the ground at Exeter will be more good than soft (looking at the amount of rain they've had and the forecast), and he will run a better race. He has been very competitive in testing ground, so if I'm correct he should win.

Ballykinlar is having his first run for Micky Bowen. He was previously trained in Ireland by a trainer who has had 17 winners from 427 runners. Ballykinlar showed promise, winning three hurdle races last year and finishing 2nd in a listed race in his last outing in October. Micky Bowen is not in great form, but he has a 10% strike rate in these races.
