Possible good duel awaits between Fortune De Mer and French Emperor, two improvers who won last time out. Fortune De Mer has made progress, but his races have looked more hard-fought than those of French Emperor, who is on a hat-trick. He's won his last two under James Bowen and is now 12 pounds higher; brother Sean takes over. He beat 14 rivals here last time off a mark of 113 and had a few rated in the 120s behind him, so today's 120 mark is fairer than it first appears.

She was involved all the way for that demanding 3 miles and can make the same tactics pay here for the same claimer. She can burn some of these off who have had prep runs, and Bertie Wooster is the bottom weight due to disappointing form thus far.

Leverkusen lost 2-0 at the weekend in Germany. That was against their recent run of form and all the more surprising that they didn't score a goal. It was the kind of timid performance that suggested they were looking at this fixture as a revenge mission with Newcastle. It's likely that the real Leverkusen will turn up tonight. Newcastle's dubious league form has turned around recently. They are unbeaten in their last four and have scored in their last eight. They tend to find the domestic and European fixture congestion problematic and still need to improve their position in both. Historical fixtures count for nothing as they haven't met for over 20 years. Both sides have key absences through injury so this could be either cagey or erratic. I favour the latter due to the needs of both sides. Home advantage for me, having compared the energy exerted by both sides at the weekend.

In a wide-open race, Jewel Eyed Judy could be the value. After a string of poor runs at very big starting prices, she took six months off and returned a different animal. This was probably expected given the new confidence shown in her (backed to 5/2 fav). She won an easy five lengths and attracted the stewards' attention. The soft and heavy ground was cited as the reason for the new form. Some of these are yet to run this season, so the current form, grade, riders' 5-pound claims, and the ground/long spell are positive.

Ted's Corner, overnight favourite, had shown nothing in five runs at large prices but was then sent off favourite despite the poor runs. Amateur ridden, ran on to be 3rd of 15 in Musselburgh and a similar run here would see him involved for the gambling yard. Possible clues to yard's intent in the market. That said, YourSimplyTheBest has more promising credentials. After four poor runs at poor odds he was then put in a handicap in the mud and was a running-on third of 11. The promise continued last time when finishing late and better over half a mile less than this in mud over CD. Jordan Gainford is a talented jockey on the rise and rides again.

Tonal, on the other hand, has won the last two and the mark on the AW is going steadily up, and that's more progressive. Plus he's won on another Polytrack surface.
