Alphonse Le Grande sneaks in with bottom weight and, though keeping top staying company on the flat as well as hurdles, hasn't looked like winning in a long time. Overnight favorite nonetheless, probably due to this being a yard debut for an 'unconventional' trainer. Fortune Del Mar is my choice. Made a disappointing start to hurdling when third after looking the winner, but a first-time hood last time saw a victory at a much higher level over this CD for a £40,000 race. The hood stays on for the handicap debut and has to be involved on the last run.

Cobden has gone on record singing the praises of No Drama This End as his work on the gallops has been impressive, and they can't wait to go. That said, the jockey and trainer have been guilty more than a few times of seeing their Cheltenham runners through rose-tinted specs. Has to be involved nonetheless. Heads Up was 2nd of 17 in the festival's Champion Bumper last March and took a break off until September. Made a hurdles debut and was 8/13 fave based on last term's bumper form and duly obliged. Was only an ordinary maiden but must have a touch of class looking at last year's form.

However, he has been placing regularly in class 3 and 4 recently, and this is a step down in a small field where form is thin. Dickens is another consistent placer, though he has won 5 hurdle races. A wide open competitive handicap to close the flat sees last year's winner, Lord Melbourne, go for a realistic follow-up. Won most impressively last year under today's apprentice and likes soft and heavy ground. Had been absent the whole of this season surprisingly but, significantly, had a tune-up for this 40 days ago in Epsom's mud and despite the year off won by 4 lengths. We know he handles the race, field size, and the mud. It's an advantage that he's had only 1 run all year at this stage of the season and will have far more petrol to call on. Castle Cove looks sure to get involved too. Ran well over 1m 2f a couple of times running on late to finish in the money. Last time went up to 1m 5f and looked good only to not quite last. Still lightly raced, this distance looks ideal though yet to encounter heavy ground.

He hasn't run this season yet, and while the trainer makes the long journey here often with success, it's hard to be enthusiastic. The first four last year were rated in the 120s, so I'm using that as a guide. The new partnership of Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore is sending winners all over the country at the moment, and they have a low-weighted outsider in If Not For Dylan. He has looked a reliable jumper so far, and that's a big plus here. He has won and placed often enough. He's a veteran these days at 10, but in receipt of weight from all and trying a tongue strap for the first time could well be in the shake-up.
