Aiden O'Brien had the first three of the French Derby at the weekend and has a strong hand here. However, it could pay to stick with his son Joseph, who runs Thundering. This is a tough distance and course to take on when trying to stay it for the first time. While most of the big bloodstock horses are likely to stay it well, Thundering On already showed improved form last time stepping up to 1m 2f. Won going away by 3 lengths then, so it looks like this distance will be ideal. All runs have been on soft or heavy ground too.

Best run last time when trying cheekpieces for the first time and winning at Goodwood over 5f. Was backed to show improved form and won well.

He has definitely appreciated stepping up in distance. Though this is back to 1m 5f, it appears that improvement is underway. This is a small field that has dangers with their best form on artificial surfaces or being without a recent run.

Eternal Force won all three races after being gelded last term at a decent level. Made the reappearance in the Lincoln at 4/1 and was well there until running out of gas late to be 7th of 21. That was respectable on balance for a £70,000 race but may have done better with a warm-up run. This is back down to earth now for a prize of £15,000 and only six in opposition. It's a long journey for the Haggas yard to Scotland.

Pearl Eye last won two years ago at Pontefract off a mark of 83. She has since run over 20 times without another win. Most of that history was with Gay Kelleway. He was sold to the Goldie yard recently and has had two runs. Both were improved runs off a reduced mark of 73. The last run was the most encouraging. Today they reach for the headgear and Paul Mulrennan takes the ride off a new reduced mark of 72. Best chance in a long time.

She has had no wins since in 11 hurdle races, and her mark has fallen from 129 to 120. They are now stepping her down to Class 4 again (last two runs were in Class 2). This is a winnable chance.

On the face of it, Thunderstorm Katie is consistent in that she always gets involved at the business end. But five wins in 31 at the lower levels isn't blinding form. She has been knocking on the door again lately with rapid finishes to go down fighting. It seems frustrating that she gets held up so long, and they don't seem to be learning from it. Possibly a repeat of the last few runs might work with this extra furlong, while still fairly handicapped (claimer assures this is now a winning mark to run off).

After a few experiments with tongue ties and a wind op, the headgear was discarded two races ago and a 5 L win from 12 rivals followed. A 9-pound penalty was added, but it didn't prevent the follow-up over this course and distance by 9 L ??" again with headgear discarded. Steps up with the same mark here but into higher company. But the current mood and apparent liking of the course are two useful ticks. The jockey who won twice retains the ride too.

Captain Cool isn't outstanding value at odds-on. He has won his last two races, but they were the only two chases he's contested and he won both. It's a surprise to see them revert him to hurdles. In his last three hurdles he's started favourite and not won. Squeezebox might prove value in what is a comeback run after eight months off and a handicap debut. Since joining this yard he has won two from three hurdle races, all on good ground. Last time's win was an easy one and he could be getting in on a good mark.

Had been knocking on the door in two previous runs. Jafimgosos is the obvious worry, being a Skelton improver. Won last time after some disappointing runs; however, it wasn't easy and there's 4 more furlongs now.

Two of the three-year-olds make a handicap debut here: Zarinca and Egotistical. The former broke her maiden on reappearance, which is improved form but has yet to race on turf. Egotistical has had two turf and two AW runs. Following a third on turf, she was backed to favourite last time at Nottingham and broke her maiden. She stayed on strongly, and if any improvement continues this is a good opportunity.

The Good Biscuit has been frustrating this season but still running decent races to get involved. Went really close around the turns of Chester after losing out by a neck here. Possibly didn't handle Hamilton's undulations well last time but was only beaten under 3 lengths when 6th. A little more punch from the saddle might see him home today against this opposition. Aberama Gold is 9 yrs old and unlikely to be improving at this stage, and though lowering the sights has only a 6% win record in 73 turf runs.

Atticum won the final of three races last season by 3 lengths, albeit in a small field. It was possibly aimed a little high on reappearance in a Sandown Class 2. That run followed a six-month break, so it may have been rusty. However, it ran on late and well to be 2 lengths fifth of nine and looked as though the extra furlong may have helped that day. This race is a shade lower in class, the horse will be fitter for that run, and it gets the extra furlong.

Won well over the distance last season on good to firm ground and will strip fitter today.

After a winning debut over 1m 4f, he stepped up to run Believeitanducan a length over 2 miles. That one gave the form a boost a couple of days ago in a £13,000 Ascot race over 2 miles. Still early and still progressing, he sets the standard.
