Regatta De Blanc is tempting in receipt of a stone from favourite Golden Son, but it appears that Paul Nicholls was glad to be rid after some dire performances. He has won a couple of small-field points for the new yard, but Golden Son has just run in both big hunter chases at Cheltenham and Aintree behind the talented and champion hunter Barton Snow. This smaller field, lesser company, and easier track should feel like a holiday, and conceding the stone should be easier than it sounds.

Al Najashi will be popular given the jockey booking and is on a sixth straight win. However, all five wins have been on artificial surfaces, and the only attempt on turf resulted in a zero. Inishbeg looks more likely, having had four runs, three on turf, with a win and a place on turf. He was well fancied last time (4/1) at Thirsk and won confidently from 13 rivals. He looks to be on an upward trajectory and gets on well with the jockey.

Cool Hoof Luke won the Gimcrack over CDs two seasons ago, and that's standout form normally. But he hasn't run on turf since and missed last season. He has had two AW runs only since, and won once last time in a small field. Not form that enthuses for a turf race of this class and field size. Aramrams' last six races have been in Class 2 and Class 1 races, the last four being on turf. He won impressively two races ago at Doncaster after a poor start, then did well from an unfavourable draw last time at Newmarket when closing to finish second of 14 in a good race. Looks value to get in on the argument here.

Geoff Oldroyd's forte is sprinters and, in particular, for the owners of Pocklington. He's had more races on artificial surfaces at a high level but has had six on turf too. He has yet to win on turf but has two places. The last four races have been on AW surfaces, but the two races before were last season where he finished a good 3rd of 20 (beaten a neck) over this course and distance for a race carrying a winning pot of over £60,000. He then took on 12 opponents at Haydock in this class and went down a nose. He has had a recent wind op and should be ready to fire on turf and get involved again.

Plage de Havre kept good company last season and at around this distance. Ended it at Haydock (1m 4f), Class 2, winning by an easy-looking 3 lengths off a mark of 92 (had Paddy The Squire in second). Not seen again until recently for a valuable Kempton race on the polytrack in a Class 1 and an inadequate 1m 2f. Was beaten 13 lengths. This is a far more suitable event at the optimum trip, surface, and class. Now that he has that run under his belt, he will be ready to go.

Interesting to see Epictetus switching up to this 1m 4f. Has been disappointing for the Osbornes so far, only getting interested too late in the 7- and 8-f races. If that mood holds again, then these turns and the extra yards may well see him finally get up. EW value negligible, having only seven runners left in.

Zatsgood hasn't started so well for the new yard in two runs and was well beaten on Tapeta on debut by 5 L at odds-on. Did better on Polytrack last time after a bad start. He was running on late and finished well to be fourth, beaten only a length. Would have been closer or won with a normal start. Polytrack here and a useful-looking extra furlong should help if he leaves it late again.

Street Dancer flopped in his first three runs at SPs from 25/1 to 150/1, so he was clearly not quite ready. Connections must have seen something change before coming here last time and stepping up 2 furlongs to this distance, as he was sent off 5/2 favourite. He came second, weakening late. It is possible that Oisin Murphy can get a bit more forceful now that he gets the ride. Captain Pickles' best run was recently over this course and distance and he can get involved.

Since being gelded, Wild Thoughts is a new horse. Three runs at the basement level??"turf and AW??"in handicaps have brought three easy wins. He won at Redcar to begin the sequence. It looked like there was petrol left each time, so this step up to Class 4 looked likely to be next, and this can go his way too.

It's early days for Wave Rock after only seven runs. She has been unplaced in both turf runs but has a win and a second on all-weather surfaces. She won here a couple of races back but couldn't replicate it at Newcastle. She came back here last time and stepped up to 1m 4f, but the experiment didn't work. She was still 2nd of 7. Now she's back to the conditions of the win here with only 3 pounds extra. Oisin Murphy rides, which is an eye-catching booking.

Tuba looks good here. A flop on turf and over hurdles has come good recently on Tapeta here. Ran a good second over 2 miles and then confirmed the potential coming here again for 1m 6f and winning by a snug 2 L. A 4-pound penalty is very fair from a punting perspective.

Last time, he put that behind him on good ground and a longer distance, having had the rating reduced from 94 to 88 (today's mark). Looked much improved, and if improving only slightly might win this.

It looks like the determination to eke out a victory is good today.

Defence Minister showed up well in this company and over this distance a few times last year and placed in big fields but didn't win a race. Between seasons he has been gelded and won on reappearance. It is fair to say that was on Polytrack (Kempton) and down in class, but it was an upturn after a break and after an operation, so that may well have made a difference. The run will have readied him for this. The jockey rides well at Ascot.

Tranquil Sea landed gambles when last seen, and it was over this distance. Won going away after cruising to the lead. Trainer explained that the return to this distance and this drier ground, as well as cheekpieces, seemed to do the trick. So if all that left them ahead of the handicapper, it seems they have a good chance of doubling up even with an 8-pound penalty. Ginger McCain is in decent form in both codes, and Serious Chat looked good at this distance last time and is consistent. Should be in at the finish.
