Long odds on debut but ground was good and a disappointing, well-beaten 5th of 12 last time. Made a mistake halfway round and, while not being dramatic enough to make a cautionary dismount, seemed dramatic enough to just ease the horse round for the remainder of the race. A proper run here would probably see a better result in the mud.

Shanroe Act was going nowhere apparently, and it was reflected in the odds with each run. Mark fell from the high 80s to 76, and a huge gamble or two was landed over hurdles, beating 14 runners. Then, in the last run, attention was turned to fences, and despite no experience was sent off 10/11 favourite and won, beating 10 runners. Significantly, all the other runners were rated in the 90s or higher. The new mark takes it up to 93, so it still has a chance.

That form took a big boost yesterday when the second, Franceis, beat one on a long winning run, Aisling Oscar. That one is rated 75, which makes the selection's mark of 71 look fair now.

Pure Steel made a nice, winning debut first time but ran too poorly to be true afterwards in a race valued at twice this prize. Can do better back in calmer waters. I Am Lorenzo is sure to be the competition after making a winning debut. He had to work hard but still won and will improve now.
