Win

22

Elvetham has 2 runner-up spots and 2 wins from 10 AW runs, so can be considered an improver. Won here to break the maiden 4 races ago, then was well beaten in two races on Tapeta. Came back to Polytrack (Ling) and tried blinkers for the first time last time and won again. Clearly prefers Polytrack to other surfaces, and the blinkers helped too. Overall, it presents an attractive EW bet.

Overall, PSG have performed best and have been a goal machine throughout this competition. The stakes are high. The pride will be too, as both try for the big double. Expect goals and cards.

Alaminos won on debut, beating 14 rivals well. Failed to double up in a Class Three next time. Had a good reappearance recently after a seven-month break. That was at Pontefract and he was staying on strongly after needing to be switched late, only going down by a head. That run will have put him straight, and a fair low draw can enable an early good pitch.

Stormin Home is zero from 10 over fences, and despite joining the Skeltons was showing little improvement until last time out. Blinkers were introduced for the first time, and he ran a big race to be a closing, close second (shd hd) over 3 miles. Harry Skelton takes over now, and this is a big chance to begin winning over fences.

Wait Geordie is tempting with the champion jockey up for one of the Chester top trainers. Won a low-class sprint at Bath on debut and can only improve. Adonius is two from two after winning 7f on debut at Musselburgh. Potential looked obvious and he went on to take a Class 2 £12,000 race, albeit only three opposed. Stall one is a plus if he breaks fast again.

Over the last couple of seasons Rajapour's mark has dropped from 108 to today's 72. That's a long fall. Returned to turf for the most recent two runs and was a poor, well-beaten 7th at Pontefract then. Last time, added cheekpieces for the first time and was an unlucky second, beaten a head after being switched a vial late stage. That improvement would seem to be more about the headgear, but the crashed rating helped too. A clear run against this opposition today would seem to give a big chance.

Very thin form here points to a likely duel between the two 4-year-olds Camera Shy and Ashen. Camera Shy won on debut in '24 and hasn't won since in 16 tries on turf and AW. Last eight runs have been poor on AW and the mark has crashed to an all-time low. Looks unreliable, though. Ashen isn't one of Jim Goldie's stars exactly, and his mark has also crashed to a low 63 (from 74). He was beaten 7L at Thirsk two races ago, then tried a mile and was an encouraging third last time at Musselburgh. Made good late headway after a poor start, and that's about the best form on offer.

Mount Ruapehu is short-based in form on synthetics. On turf has only won 1 in 33 races (in 2022), so may not be value. Thunderstorm K Latie might be value for the Goldie team. Has lost last 3 on AW (Newc) but before that won there, and last time on turf was Musselburgh and won off 55 for Paul Mulrennan (9 rides here). Goes off a mark of 60 here, which in the context of this race looks fair, providing the break hasn't made her too rusty. Is a CD winner.

Venetian Sun has amassed over £300,000 in five races, four of which she's won. Ran up a four-timer at two, over 5f and 6f, at a high level. Concluded the season at the Curragh over 7f and won a pot of £235.00. Didn't have a great run throughout and was forced to wait then switch, but ran on well to be third to two O'Brien horses. It looked like the extra yardage suited and that this season a mile would be fine. Shouldn't have any navigation problems on the straight mile and went well fresh last season.

Square Necker has only had three runs, but this is the third trainer. The only run on turf was the debut, when he was 6/4 favourite and finished third over 1m3f. Em Four has won twice on turf but is primarily an AW horse. Won well on AW last time, but the mark rising seems to be based on synthetic surfaces and hasn't won on turf above a mark of 72, so this mark of 80 on turf looks stiff. Dapper Valley was also dual-purpose, winning on turf four times. Left the yard and went abroad, then came back and rejoined James Owen. Had a run at Leicester and won going away off a mark of 73, and this penalty doesn't look stiff.

JP has 5 in the race. I choose the Mark Walsh pick, Fierce Handay. Has won and placed in a handful already, but last time stepped up to 2m 5f for his best performance yet after a poor run previously. Beat Blue Mosque an easy 5 lengths. That one franked the form in no uncertain fashion on Thursday here. Trainer also had a nicely well-backed handicap hurdler that day with a similar route set out to this one. A repeat of that run last time will surely get him in the finish.

Apolon De Charnie improved a lot to take the Triumph at the festival, and Willie Mullins has been mopping up the big prizes again this week. However, he was the least fancied of a handful of the yard's runners that day at 50/1, suggesting it was a bit of a turn-up all round. Another big improver is Saratoga, who beat 21 rivals snugly at the festival, albeit in a handicap. The manner of the win suggested he is better than a handicapper and might not have been out of place in the better races there. He gets the chance to show it here and should make the favourite work.
