Herakles Westwood has a good record around Cheltenham, and his amateur has a good wins-to-runs ratio in Ireland and here. He was a close second over 3 miles here two races ago, then won there comfortably last time. He has very good EW credentials.

Ten of the last 12 winners have been age 6??"8. Nine of the last 12 winners have been rated between 134 and 146. Eight of the 12 winners carried 11st 4lb or less. Electric Mason fits the bill and, at (overnight) 9/1, looks good each-way value. Since stepping up to 3 miles he was only just beaten here in a 17-runner race, then went to Haydock and won a race of that size. He comes into this in great form.

Teahupoo and Bob Ollinger represent the same owner and have both won this before. A few winners have doubled up in the past. However, at 9 and 11 years of age they're not getting younger. Overall, 6??"8 year olds dominate (won 10 of the last 12). The seasoned ones here look vulnerable and Kabral Du Mathan can exploit it. A recent recruit to the Skelton yard from Paul Nicholls has won both runs since. Last time, at odds-on, won very easily, going away from Jingko Blue (won here yesterday). It looked like 3 miles would be ideal and was aimed here right away.

Willie Mullins has won six of these and has won the last two with champion hurdler Lossiemouth. He knows what a candidate looks like. Despite the doubters this year, he and his team are already dominating and he can take this with Jade de Grugy. Had a nice little blowout last time for a £29,000 race and won by an eased 18 lengths. Should outpoint Woodhoo, who is nine wins from ten for the Elliott yard. The trainer form factor points to Mullins, as does the prevailing good ground. Ten of the last 12 winners were rated 148 or over. Only these two are.

Bambino Fever was the outstanding bumper last year and looks good over hurdles. He was beaten on debut by Oldschool Outlaw but improved to win easily next time. Mullins and Townend are already dominating the festival at the midpoint. However, while conventional thought suggests that the Mullins one will be fit enough for revenge now, it's worth remembering that Oldschool Outlaw also improved to win a better race next time, so he won't lie down here. It's been seven years since a favourite won this.

20:00 PSG v Chelsea

PSG & Yes (Result + BTTS)

Result and BTTS

PSG beat three English sides to win this cup last season and can beat Chelsea too. Domestic form has been below par, but they still sit at the top of the table. Chelsea have been up and down like a yo-yo all season and have faced slightly less in the way of opposition in this cup than the hosts. PSG won't let go of the trophy easily at this stage.
20:00 Real Madrid v Man City

Real Madrid & Yes (Result + BTTS)

Result and BTTS

These sides are like two heavyweights who keep having a rematch and not letting the crowd down. At the top of their game in recent seasons, they have been goal-fest teams. Both sides are still doing well enough domestically, but neither is as strong as in recent seasons. The hosts are the most difficult side in Europe to defeat on home soil, but Man City pulled that off on their last visit. Since 2010, however, City have been up and down domestically as well as in Europe and will struggle to pull it off again. But I feel they'll go at it from the off. In the last 15 meetings it's 5 wins each and 5 draws. It would be a surprise to see a clean sheet.

Only one of the last 12 runnings has seen a favourite win, and nine of the 12 were priced above 10/1. Seven of the last 12 have been trained in Britain. Ben Pauling ticks the boxes here and won this in 2022. Vanderpoet has had four chases and won his two most recent, albeit in small fields for decent money. Ben Jones gets on well with him. He's going the right way and hasn't many miles on the clock, and if handling the hurly-burly of this field can get involved. Smart jockey in the saddle.

Beckett Rock is still lightly raced and had shown nothing in six runs before trying a handicap last time and improving significantly. Also significant is that it got a handicap mark and entry to this just as the improvement is beginning. Henry de Bromhead is a great Cheltenham trainer, and this can be a value place price.

Nine of the last 12 winners have been 7 years old. That's about half the field. Romeo Coolio has been one of the Elliott yard's big hopes for a while. He's four wins from four chases now and was in line for a crack at the Aintree. But even though two wins have been over 2m 4f and two over 2m, the choice has been to go even further here. It looks a little startling, but Elliott has a long record of success at the top, so he has to be taken seriously.

Ten of the last 12 winners came from the first three in the betting. Willie Mullins has two of those here, and his jockey has chosen King Rasko Grey. This one has been in much better races than the other two but no further than 2m 3f. Mullins' other, Sober, has impressed and is two from two under Paul Townend and has won over this 2m 5f. But the jockeys chose Rasko. The stable have won three of the last three runnings.

Newcastle's fatigue continues along with the fixture congestion, and they've had a very hard couple of weeks. Both Manchester sides have beaten them, as has Everton. They are outsiders for any trophy and need league security, so the last thing they need is a Barcelona side coming to play. Barcelona have congestion too, but have a deeper squad and have won 4 of their last 5 domestically. I see a win for the visitors, but a goal for the hosts.

Galatasaray look booked for a domestic title again or runner-up at least. Galatasaray are stronger now than when beating Liverpool earlier in the season, and Liverpool are weaker. Liverpool still tend to dither at the back, and you can't do that against the Turkish giants as they flood forward with focus and power (scored 3+ goals in 13 of their last games). Salah is still looking a liability for Liverpool despite a rare flash of positivity at the weekend and may again get lost in the shuffle in Europe. Liverpool's number one keeper looks doubtful too. Hosts look value.

While there is a field full of real class here as usual, there's a lot of 'fake' form due to recent falls, pull-ups, and horrible underfoot conditions. Consequently, there are no really reliable form lines on those runs. Looking at last year's mares' hurdle and the way Lossiemouth won it makes his recent defeat by Brighterdays Ahead last time understandable. Willie Mullins has a fantastic record here and always lights the field up, so putting her in to avenge the defeat and adding blinkers to help is good enough for me.

Not the favourite race of the Irish raiders, as the home team have won the last 12 runnings. Favourites don't have a great record (won 3 of the last 12). Eight of the last 12 winners have carried 11-8 or less. Despite four below-average runs by Quebecois, Paul Nicholls seems to think he's up to this standard. He was 2.5/1 favourite last time; he lost at Newbury in a three-horse race. He's managed to maintain a level good enough to get into this race without alerting the handicapper, which suggests to me that he's been hiding from him, waiting for this race. Has to be of interest given the yard's recent handicap winners here. Blaze The Way ran and won in a very good race here two races ago, then had little more than a tune-up at Naas to keep things moving. Ran poorly, so gets in light.

All stats on record point to the first three in the betting. It could be another one for Nicky Henderson, who has been the only home trainer to disrupt the Irish in the last seven seasons with two winners. Old Park Star won impressively by a wide margin at Haydock and, though eased, was clocking a fast time in soft ground. Before that, he won as easily in a good race here. That might give him the nod over the Mullins-trained Mighty Park. Only one run isn't great, but it was a 45-length win. It was a big field, but how much quality was in it isn't clear. He'll need to be at least as good as the hype to beat Old Park Star.
