Newcastle's fatigue continues along with the fixture congestion, and they've had a very hard couple of weeks. Both Manchester sides have beaten them, as has Everton. They are outsiders for any trophy and need league security, so the last thing they need is a Barcelona side coming to play. Barcelona have congestion too, but have a deeper squad and have won 4 of their last 5 domestically. I see a win for the visitors, but a goal for the hosts.

Galatasaray look booked for a domestic title again or runner-up at least. Galatasaray are stronger now than when beating Liverpool earlier in the season, and Liverpool are weaker. Liverpool still tend to dither at the back, and you can't do that against the Turkish giants as they flood forward with focus and power (scored 3+ goals in 13 of their last games). Salah is still looking a liability for Liverpool despite a rare flash of positivity at the weekend and may again get lost in the shuffle in Europe. Liverpool's number one keeper looks doubtful too. Hosts look value.

Booster Bob won two races to sign off 2025 and they were good chases. One was a £56,000 race at Newbury. Likes distances between 2m 4f and 2m 6f. Took on class 1 company last time at Cheltenham, but that was a comeback run after three months. Eased when the chance was gone. Likely saved for today, so seems to have very nice each-way credentials.

While there is a field full of real class here as usual, there's a lot of 'fake' form due to recent falls, pull-ups, and horrible underfoot conditions. Consequently, there are no really reliable form lines on those runs. Looking at last year's mares' hurdle and the way Lossiemouth won it makes his recent defeat by Brighterdays Ahead last time understandable. Willie Mullins has a fantastic record here and always lights the field up, so putting her in to avenge the defeat and adding blinkers to help is good enough for me.

Not the favourite race of the Irish raiders, as the home team have won the last 12 runnings. Favourites don't have a great record (won 3 of the last 12). Eight of the last 12 winners have carried 11-8 or less. Despite four below-average runs by Quebecois, Paul Nicholls seems to think he's up to this standard. He was 2.5/1 favourite last time; he lost at Newbury in a three-horse race. He's managed to maintain a level good enough to get into this race without alerting the handicapper, which suggests to me that he's been hiding from him, waiting for this race. Has to be of interest given the yard's recent handicap winners here. Blaze The Way ran and won in a very good race here two races ago, then had little more than a tune-up at Naas to keep things moving. Ran poorly, so gets in light.

The last three winners of this have carried 11-7 and been six years old. They also had a run within 50 days. Lulamba fits the frame. Given that he injured himself mid-race last time and still got up to win well at Newbury, and the ground is less heavy here and he is injury-free, he has a huge chance.

All stats on record point to the first three in the betting. It could be another one for Nicky Henderson, who has been the only home trainer to disrupt the Irish in the last seven seasons with two winners. Old Park Star won impressively by a wide margin at Haydock and, though eased, was clocking a fast time in soft ground. Before that, he won as easily in a good race here. That might give him the nod over the Mullins-trained Mighty Park. Only one run isn't great, but it was a 45-length win. It was a big field, but how much quality was in it isn't clear. He'll need to be at least as good as the hype to beat Old Park Star.

She won off a mark of 68, then 73, and when up to 78 only three days later, she missed the break and edged left late. That was as much down to inexperienced steering, and tonight she's reunited with the winning jockey.

With the defection of Westandtogether, the opportunity now arises for the other improver in the field, King Bob. This one ran three poor races at very large starting prices but has improved in his last two to be third. He ran well for today's jockey, coming from off the pace in a field of eight, beaten seven lengths. Last time he was held up slightly too long but ran on again to be third of 18 in yielding ground. Both runs indicate improvement, and it now looks good enough here.

In a race where there's little and no decent recent form, Westandtogether stands out. Her last run was her best to date. It was also her first handicap. Prior to the race she had run three times at odds of over 100/1. She liked the heavy ground, and while this is 6 furlongs shorter, it can be done again with the penalty as she travelled strongly enough throughout to suggest she'll drop a few of these early.
