He showed 3 miles is ideal when a close second last time, with the third well beaten. Looks forecast material.

So Chic isn't a prolific winner even at this level on AW but has four wins. Won off 55 over CD two years ago, then not again until 10 runs later when the mark slipped to 45. Won last time at 40/1 here at CD off 52, so is feasibly able to win again off 55, then removing 5 pounds via the claimer. Stewards were interested in the improvement last time, and the return to AW was actually accepted, thus making this run interesting now.

Ambient Friendly has been 2nd then won in two hurdle races and is improving obviously at this stage. However, he has been in a good lead both times and ended up having to fight. He may well set this up again for a finisher like Across Earth, who finished strongly to win last time in a better race at Sandown on soft. Had horses rested 1-2-0 behind him, so I’d be in on a decent mark and, with the claimers' allowance taking off three pounds, it will make it harder for Ambient Friendly, who will be conceding six pounds in all.

Latin has finished top 3 in the last 6 and won twice. The wins were at Southwell over this distance, but arguably the best runs were when 2nd and third here over 3 furlongs further. Ran well both times but didn't stay that extra yardage. Finally gets the best distance here today, so the usual standard should be good enough for this.

Jackie Hobbs made an impressive hurdling debut at Newbury, winning a snug 3 lengths. That was a Class 2 and went off 13/8 fav, so clearly highly thought of following an impressive bumper record last season. The second and third that day have since both won easily, so the form is looking genuine.

J P seems to hold the key here with the first two in the betting. Impose Toi has had a couple of runs (two wins) already and is still lightly raced. The Henderson horses are impressing or disappointing so far, so it could pay to oppose with the rival Honesty Policy who was improving rapidly at this level last season and is only 5. Gordon Elliott is doing pretty well on his raids from Ireland this season.

United Approach joined the Osborne yard recently. After a decent turf effort, he ran two good races in defeat on AW surfaces. He messed up the start but finished fast to be 2nd at Wolves. Then at Kempton he had another bad start and got stuck behind horses early. Though only 6th, he ran on fast to be less than 2 lengths behind the winner. Both races could arguably have been won, so he could be sneaking in off a false mark here and may well pay for the Osborne Christmas turkey.

Mick's Spirit is 7 and has over 50 runs and could be vulnerable to one less exposed. Son of Astar has consistent figures but is yet to show any on an artificial surface. Bluebells Boy last won in October and it was over this course and distance off a mark of 68. Since then he has run 11 times on turf as well as AW surfaces, and the risen mark of 74 has gradually fallen through no wins to a mark of 60 as he arrives back where the last win happened eight pounds higher.

That, and European glory, are the team's priorities and their manager frequently cries about fixture congestion, so it's likely they'll field a 'B' team. Brentford are still a front-foot side, and it serves them well. They're in the bottom third of the table now, though, without their former manager, and they'll try to pounce on a second-choice City side. Clean sheets will be a surprise.

Al Waqidi is hovering beneath the radar. The last two races have seen poor starts but late gains. The impression is that the result could have been better with the right kind of effort. It can't be put down to inexperience, as he won his first two races in his career in 2020/21 (AW and turf). The mark has now sank from 90 to 62. This has to be a big chance now with a decent start and a strong jockey on board.

Cardiff have won their last five league games to remain top and have beaten teams from higher divisions in their last two round games in this competition. They arrive on a high. Chelsea arrive during a confused phase. After looking like top two in the premiership, they have had blips and have been up against it fixture-congestion-wise. The manager has been voicing mysterious complaints. They look as though they need to rest a couple of big names and maybe not give them 90 minutes. Falling out of this competition would enable a window to breathe in the fixtures. The fixture seems to level itself out through all of this, and I expect goals and no clean sheets.

Providing the ground doesn't go too deep, it can carry on the good work. Bobbi With An I has run over a variety of distances and on a variety of ground, and it seems they can't decide on the optimum conditions yet, judging by the win/run ratio.

Toon Town can win this small-field handicap. Changed hands recently but is now zero from four for the new trainer over fences. On closer inspection, he has run well as the last two races were large fields and the fourth of 15 was good and still had 11 behind. This is a couple of furlongs shorter, and they reach for the blinkers for the first time. Won't mind any kind of going.
