Venetian Sun has amassed over £300,000 in five races, four of which she's won. Ran up a four-timer at two, over 5f and 6f, at a high level. Concluded the season at the Curragh over 7f and won a pot of £235.00. Didn't have a great run throughout and was forced to wait then switch, but ran on well to be third to two O'Brien horses. It looked like the extra yardage suited and that this season a mile would be fine. Shouldn't have any navigation problems on the straight mile and went well fresh last season.

Square Necker has only had three runs, but this is the third trainer. The only run on turf was the debut, when he was 6/4 favourite and finished third over 1m3f. He stepped up to 1m4f last time against Constitution Hill and, though beaten 9 lengths, was running on and fancied as the second favourite. That was on an all-weather track, and this is a slight step down in class.

Em Four has won twice on turf but is primarily an AW horse. Won well on AW last time, but the mark rising seems to be based on synthetic surfaces and hasn't won on turf above a mark of 72, so this mark of 80 on turf looks stiff. Dapper Valley was also dual-purpose, winning on turf four times. Left the yard and went abroad, then came back and rejoined James Owen. Had a run at Leicester and won going away off a mark of 73, and this penalty doesn't look stiff.

JP has 5 in the race. I choose the Mark Walsh pick, Fierce Handay. Has won and placed in a handful already, but last time stepped up to 2m 5f for his best performance yet after a poor run previously. Beat Blue Mosque an easy 5 lengths. That one franked the form in no uncertain fashion on Thursday here. Trainer also had a nicely well-backed handicap hurdler that day with a similar route set out to this one. A repeat of that run last time will surely get him in the finish.

Apolon De Charnie improved a lot to take the Triumph at the festival, and Willie Mullins has been mopping up the big prizes again this week. However, he was the least fancied of a handful of the yard's runners that day at 50/1, suggesting it was a bit of a turn-up all round. Another big improver is Saratoga, who beat 21 rivals snugly at the festival, albeit in a handicap. The manner of the win suggested he is better than a handicapper and might not have been out of place in the better races there. He gets the chance to show it here and should make the favourite work.

Blue RC is consistent on turf and AW. He has won two of three runs on turf. He won at Yarmouth last time trying turf last season in a small field. The race before saw him cruise to a 3-length win over this course and distance on his only visit here off a mark of 88. He won a couple on AW since, but this mark of 99 looks very fair for his first turf run of the season. Yet to be out of the first two in 9 races.

Spirou has a few positives to recommend his chances here. He only recently arrived at his current yard from France, where he had a win over hurdles in 2023. Not seen again until last month when, despite the long break, he was pitched straight into Class 3 at Newbury and obliged at 20/1. That was on good to soft ground (other runs all on heavy). He had horses rated in the 120s and 130s behind him that day, so this rating of 122 looks fair now he's had a warm-up.

Another good mount for R. James on Wonderwall, who was a respectable 7th of 23 at the Champion Hunters at the Festival. That followed a hat-trick in points and he has won another point since. Beat Its On The Line the year before at Cheltenham in the Hunters for this jockey.

He will be fitter for this race and can beat exposed rivals.

The Big Clubman has competed well in only a handful of runs but seems to have two ways of running. He has yet to take on a sizeable field, but the trainer reaches for first-time cheekpieces here and he knows how to get one ready. The Lovely Man is tried and tested at this level over hurdles and fences and has the best form, but has only ever run on heavy ground. Blue Mosque's only win was two years ago and he has five seconds since. A reduced mark last time saw him go well and come second of 15 in a nice race over 2m 5f, finishing well. That seemed to signify improvement, and the few poor runs prior have ensured a fair mark in this open race, so he should get involved.

Busselton won this last year, which makes him a bit of a course specialist, but he has done nothing since in a handful of runs. With Joseph O'Brien now, he may improve. He won last year in a race where the market leaders fell. Vanillier loves these cross-country races here and at Cheltenham, and always gets involved. It looks like it could be his turn today despite the years. He had The Goffer well beaten at Cheltenham, and I can confirm that, though the latter was amateur ridden, made mistakes, and got a bit lost before running on again. Jack Kennedy gets on today, so expect that one to run much better.

The run can be discounted as a form guide. He was progressing nicely prior to the race. All three races since joining the yard have been in soft or heavy ground, but he won both flat runs on good to soft in France.

He ended last season 2nd of 14 at Doncaster, but that could have been because the ground was deep, the grade was one above this, and he had incurred 3 consecutive penalties for a treble. He did OK on his comeback at Ripon to be 3rd of 8 on that awkward course for a 6-pound claimer. Tudhope started the winning sequence last year and is up again.
