Barley last won 2 years ago to the day, and it was this CD off a mark of 73. Since then, he has had several runs without winning again, and the mark that was once raised to 83 has gradually fallen to a last time-out mark of 66, which may be why the starting price was 3/1 favorite. He waited too long to challenge but managed a close-up (1 L) third. The stable have finally found some form, and the mark is still 5 pounds lower than at that last win.

Albaydaa looks the class act. Has won one turf and one AW so far and placed four times in six runs. Only just held on by a head last time, however, over CD and may be vulnerable to a higher-rated one in form. Elusive Butterfly has been in good company too and, after an unlucky run in a large field at York (still ran well), won well at Epsom, beating a highly rated Joseph O'Brien one in a valuable race. This stiff course may bring out his fighting qualities better.

After a good 3rd on debut, Shushu made all on the second run and went clear late to win by 2 lengths from a John Gosden well-connected one. Obviously progressing early, and this handicap debutant may well have most of these caught out before that climb at the end.
