The hood he wore there is left off today for his all-weather debut this afternoon.

Having begun his career with a fourth-place finish over six furlongs at Thirsk and followed that with a sixth place at Hamilton, and a fifth place over the minimum trip at Catterick, he moves up to seven furlongs today. The booking of Jamie Spencer is encouraging.

Chris Gordon's Unico's last win came at Yarmouth over six furlongs seventeen months ago, when she was still trained by Marco Botti. She finished a good third here over six furlongs two weeks ago just over two lengths behind a winner that has gone in again since. Today she drops back to the minimum trip, which given the ease in the ground here could suit her, and off the same mark of 57 she carried last time I think she has a great chance.

The former Joseph O'Brien-trained four-year-old has not run on the flat himself since finishing fourth on his racecourse debut over today's mile and a half at Tramore in August last year. His sole win in his ten starts came in a maiden hurdle at Catterick in January. With Kieran Shoemark booked to ride here, I think he has an each-way chance.

Andrew Balding's horses have been in amazing form all season, and he can win this year's renewal of the St Leger with Furthur, who had the favourite here Scandinavia three places behind him when finishing second to Carmers in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, before disappointing when tailed off behind the same rival in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket next time. He then bounced back by winning the Group Three Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury in August. Furthur has three-quarters of a length to find with Carmers from the Queen’s Vase, but is still improving.

Today's soft ground should be perfect for Lord Bertie, who won a classified race at a grade higher, for his former yard on similar ground last year. He has yet to be placed in six starts this year since joining David O’Meara, but he has run well in defeat a few times, particularly when staying on in a seven furlong handicap here in June off a seven lb higher mark, when fitted with a first-time hood. Today he drops back to six furlongs for the first time in his career and is also dropped in grade. He gets in here off a career low mark of 82 minus the three lb claim of Cian Horgan.

He followed that with a dead-heat for third place finish only a half-length behind the winner on his debut for the Fahey yard off a seven lb higher mark when stepping up to today's mile and two furlongs for the first time at York's Ebor meeting, finishing strongly on that occasion despite being forced wide throughout. He gets in here today off just a lb higher mark of 94 and today's soft ground will suit him perfectly.

The William Haggas yard has been in great form recently, as demonstrated by his 27% strike rate in the last two weeks. His Santorini Star can keep up that good run today. Three weeks ago, the four-year-old filly stayed on well to win the Stayers Handicap at York by a comfortable length and a half, off a five lb lower mark of 97 in what was her first attempt at a two-mile trip. Dropping back two furlongs in distance should not be a problem today.

Tim Easterby's horses have been in good form all season, and he has a good chance in the opening six and a half furlong fillies’ nursery of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster this afternoon with his Bearin Up, who, as a daughter of Kodi Bear, is bred to appreciate a bit of cut in the ground. Last time out, when stepped back up to six furlongs at Ripon, she missed the break and didn’t look at home on the track, but did stay on late to finish third. She has had just the mandatory three runs to get a mark, so is open to any amount of further improvement now that she goes up half a furlong in trip, on what should be a softer surface, and get placed at least off an opening mark of 67, getting weight from every other horse here.

Eddie and Patrick Harty’s Pallatine Hills remains a maiden after nine starts, but he has run well a few times. His last two runs have been particularly encouraging. First, at the Curragh, he finished third in a twenty-runner handicap, and then an arguably better performance when fifth at the Galway Festival, in a race where he didn’t get any pace to aim at. Today, he gets in here off the handy mark of 70 minus Jamie Powell's three lb claim and has a good draw in stall three, which should allow him to get a good position in the early part of the race before using his stamina in the final furlong.

Kieran Cotter's Pinar Del Rio has had two runner-up finishes at Naas and the Curragh this season, which give him an obvious chance here. Twelve months ago, while still trained by Joe Conlon, he made all to win over six furlongs at the Curragh before repeating it over seven furlongs at Limerick on heavy ground ten days later. So every drop of rain that falls here today is in his favour.

The William Muir and Chris Grassick-trained Honour Whim is an unexposed three-year-old who is having just her ninth start this afternoon. Her best race so far came when finishing six and a half lengths behind stablemate Respiro Solitario when fifth in a mile and a half handicap at Ffos Las in July. She failed to build on that in her two subsequent starts over a mile and two furlongs, so I think the extra furlong and a half of today's trip will probably suit her, as I suspect will today's easier ground conditions. Overall, I think she is a solid each-way bet here.

I know, as a proud Yorkshireman, there is nowhere he enjoys having winners more than here. He can continue his excellent form here with Earthwatch, who was a comfortable four and a quarter length winner from Falmouth Lad, who won next time out at Sandown in a mile handicap in July. I think Earthwatch can defy a hefty eleven lb rise in the weights here.

With a 28% strike rate in the last two weeks, Adrian Wintle's horses are in a rich vein of form at the moment. His Revich, who gets in here off a mark of 77, which is eighteen lbs below the one he last won off, can take this. The nine-year-old gelding ran well two starts back when beaten just a length at Ripon in July. He was then sent to Chester for a classified next time but had to be switched wide two furlongs out. He kept on well after that, eventually finishing sixth. This is a considerable drop in grade, and he has run well here in the past. Soft ground will also suit him, and he could well go in today.

The Jennie Candlish-trained Pergamon looked a little unlucky to bump into a couple of well-handicapped three-year-olds last time out in an extended two-mile handicap at Doncaster in July. The winner has gone in again next time out and is now rated 23 lbs higher, and the second and fourth have also won since. The tongue-tie that seemed to work that day is retained here, and he also gets in here off a lb lower mark of 73 minus Alfie Redman's five lb claim. He looks well worth a few quid each way.

She ran well when finishing six lengths behind the classy Awaken in a six-furlong maiden at Leicester in July, before running over seven furlongs at Epsom where she didn't handle the undulations and finished seventh of the eight runners. She is dropped in grade and back to six furlongs here, and with Jamie Spencer booked to ride for the first time, I think she will go well.
