Christine Dunnett's horses have been in very poor form lately but I think her Mini Mac might provide her with some welcome cheer here. The former George Boughey trained gelding is dropping in class today, and he ran his best race for this yard when upped in trip last time at Nottingham, keeping on well from a poor track position to finish 5th. Unfortunately there are only seven runners in this race and the hot favourite will probably win, but if he runs at his best he has a chance of getting second.

The David Evans-trained Rohaan has been disappointing in his last two starts at Newbury and Kempton, respectively. However, he has a better record here at Southwell, including when going down by a length to subsequent winner We Never Stop last month (the third has won since too). On that occasion, he met trouble in running, and the winner got the first run on him and had gone by the time Rohaan got going. He should be able to take advantage today of a two lb lower mark.

Roger Varian's Orchard Keeper finished three lengths behind Overture when the pair met at Yarmouth in September. Today, she enjoys a seven lb swing in the weights with that rival here and has the advantage of having already had a run. At Leicester last time, she didn't have a lot of room to start her run when the race began to get going in earnest, so it was a good effort to be only beaten a length. She followed that with a second-place finish behind the useful Janey Mackers in another valuable race at Doncaster. She was easy to back when making her seasonal debut over a mile and a half at Southwell three weeks ago, but was going as well as anything turning in before running out of steam on her first start for 163 days. Today, she drops back to a mile and two furlongs for her handicap debut off the very reasonable opening mark of 73.

Willie Mullins is going for his second UK trainers championships today and I think he will succeed. His High Class Hero will love the spring ground at Sandown. He is the choice of Paul Townend who is Willie’s number one stable jockey. This horse ran up a winning sequence of four in a row as a novice hurdler. The ground was too soft in the Albert Bartlett hurdle however he bounced back to finish second to stablemate Dancing City in a three-mile grade 1 novice hurdle at the 2024 Punchestown Festival. Mullins has kept half the field out of the handicap proper by running top weight and 168 rated Grangeclare West. It leaves High Class Hero carrying 10-8 and he has a favourites chance.

Venetia Williams' Victtorino was pulled up in the Ultima at Cheltenham last time out, but got behind early after playing up at the start. Prior to that, he had finished strongly in the Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury at the end of 2024 and won the Swinley at Ascot in February. This is the last real test of stamina of the season, and he is a strong stayer who, as long as he behaves at the start and doesn't get too far behind early on, has every chance of getting placed at least here.

David Simcock has his horses in great form at the moment, saddling three winners from his last eight runners, including a 22-1 and 25-1 shot. He can have another big price winner here with his lightly raced six-year-old, Cash, who won his only start as a juvenile and was beaten just a short head on his seasonal debut as a three-year-old by the top-class Westover. Cash pulled out in the Sandown Classic Trial, at which point he was thought a serious Derby contender. After that, things appear to have gone wrong, with a subsequent absence of 220 days preceding a mediocre comeback in an all-weather Listed event, after which his campaigns have been more stop than start. This is his first run in 219 days, but he goes well when fresh and likes it here at Sandown.

There are only seven runners for this year's renewal of the Gordon Richards Stakes, and I think John & Thady Gosden's Peace Man could pull off a shock. In June, the six-year-old won over today's mile and two furlong trip at Newmarket and followed that with a close third place in the Group 3 Darley Stakes over the same C&D in October. He then went down by just a nose in a good race over the same distance there in November. Last time out, he was tried on Newcastle's all-weather surface, which didn't suit him, and he hung badly left before finishing fifth. Today, back on turf, he should be competitive. The Gosden stable have a good record in this race, having won five previous runnings of it.
