The Patrick Chamings-trained The Bitter Moose made all for an easy four-and-a-half-length win at Epsom in August. Next time out, in an amateur race at Ascot in October, he finished last of the seventeen runners. The track, the soft ground, and particularly the aggressive ride he was given didn't suit him there. I think, with Hector Crouch onboard, he is worth another chance in what looks an easier assignment here this evening.

Sir David

Last season, while still in the Stella Barclay stable, after a win in a seven-furlong Carlisle handicap, Sir David looked to be progressing nicely. He then ran inexplicably poorly, finishing last of the nine runners in a Hamilton when stepping up to a mile for the first time, having previously looked as if that would be his ideal trip. He has since moved to Nigel Tinkler, for whom he makes his stable debut here. Maybe the new scenery will rejuvenate him. If you can forgive that one bad run, he is worth a few quid each way at a big price, with four places being paid.

This can go to the Ian Williams-trained Tonal, who has been ultra-consistent on an artificial surface. He is the only C&D winner in the field. Tristan Davidson's Iris Dancer is making her seasonal debut here, which is not normally the time I would back her, as the eight-year-old mare usually needs a couple of runs to show her best form. Tom Tate's Maybe Soon has made steady progress in her three starts so far. She was well beaten over this trip at Newcastle last time, but there she bumped into the potentially very good Andrew Balding-trained Infinite Dream, who blew away the whole field. Today she makes her handicap debut against more modest opposition off a good opening mark of 80. I think she is worth a few quid each way.

Pontefract, with its sharp left-handed turn and stiff uphill finish, is one of the most unique courses in Britain. As such, course form is more important than elsewhere. One of Kevin Ryan-trained Vantheman's turf wins came over today's C&D off a three-pound higher mark in 2024. Today he is also returning from a 46-day break, having in the past run his best races when fresh.

This could be a great day for the O'Neils. First-time blinkers saw Monbeg Genius stay on for third in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham, a race in which he had all but one of the Irish raiders finish behind him. The headgear remains on today. Monbeg Genius has threatened to win one of these big staying handicap chases over the last couple of years and gets in here with the good weight of 10st 13lb (21 of the last 25 winners carried 10st 13lb or less).

Neil Mulholland's Transmission looked back to his best when winning the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh in February. He was such an easy twelve-length winner that day that I doubt the eight-pound rise in the weights will be enough to stop him. Anyway, that rise is counterbalanced here by the seven-pound claim of Harry Atkins.

Harry Fry's High Fibre took advantage of a substantial drop in the weights to beat Wild Goose by two and a quarter lengths over two miles at Kempton on his penultimate start a fortnight ago. A week ago he was headed in the final strides and beaten by a short head by the well-backed Jack Hyde, but those who backed him down to favouritism that day could get their money back here as he steps back up in trip. With two of his three runners winning, Harry Fry has a good record at Plumpton this season. High Fibre can keep that good run going this afternoon.

She’s since moved to Charlie Pike, who trained the runner-up in a Listed race at Newcastle on Friday. With Eddie Greatrex booked, she looks a really good each-way bet here. Bought for nearly £200,000 in 2020 by Willie Mullins Ballybay, who, after a stop-start career, has more letters than numbers after his name, hasn't really lived up to expectations, to put it mildly. Currently trained by Murty McGrath, the nine-year-old did show a bit of promise before making a bad mistake four out over fences at Huntingdon last time out.
