50 WIN

Lose

-50

The William Muir & Chris Grassick trained Snapcracklepop won up a couple of handicaps in 2022, including first time out, but went winless last year, and as a result he resumes today off a good mark, six lb lower than for his last win. This evening he is dropping back to his winning distance and the various headgear he wore on each of his starts last year is left off. Muir & Grassick have had four winners from its last eight runners and his jockey Lewis Edmunds is in great form at the moment.

Sandy Thomson's Bass Rock failed to progress over fences following his opening win at Carlisle. He won this race twice back in 2021 & 2022 so likes this trip and course. His 2022 win was off a handicap mark of 130, and he is down to 123 for this race. Bass Rock had his first run over hurdles in two years last month at Kelso. The trip of two miles was too short, and he can do much better upped in trip to 2m5.5f in this race with Ryan Mania back onboard.

Donald McCain's General Officer comes to Ayr fresh following his win at Kelso, a month ago. He is a most consistent chaser with two wins and four places from his six chasing starts. He ran in two limited handicap chases earlier this season when runner-up to Master Chewy and Tahmuras. That is excellent form as those are Grade One0 and Two class chasers respectively. Brian Hughes rides, and he carries a nice weight of 11-2 with soft ground fine.

Richard Hannon has made a good start to the flat season, and he can win this with Gisburn who was my choice for this race last year when he ran inexplicably badly finishing last of the fifteen runners, only to win a couple of starts later. Since then, he has had two wins over this C&D before his form rather trailed off at the end of last year. He gets in here off a winning mark of 90 and made his seasonal debut at Newcastle in January which should have put him right for today.

Last year the Peter Chapple-Hyam trained North View had his first two starts at Ascot and Newmarket (July), and following a promising debut he went off evens favourite for a seven furlong novice on his second race. He travelled best but was just outstayed by Watcha Matey, who was a clear winner of a mile handicap off 79 on the first day of this meeting: In September he won a maiden at Bath, and was then due to run in the Group Three Horris Hill, but missed the race with a bad scope. He should go well today providing the Chapple-Hyam team have him ready.

The Stuart Edmunds-trained Majestic Jameela is in the best form of her career at the moment and this is a good opportunity for her to land a big prize. It took Majestic Jameela a number of races to settle and build consistency this season, but she has definitely found that having won two and finished runner-up in the other in her last three races. Her trainer is also in red-hot form having enjoyed three winners from seven runners in the past fortnight.

James Ferguson's Engelbert finished down the field on his reappearance at Southwell, but the outing should have brought him on, and he now returns to the course and distance over which he's recorded his two best runs. Last March he was an easy winner here, and in October he was runner-up to Doctor Khan Junior. That latter effort is particularly strong form, the winner going on to complete a four-timer and rating 26lb higher than when he beat Engelbert in the first of his wins. The third also won next time out.

David O'Meara's Bopedro won this race last season off a rating of 97. He is rated three lbs higher this time round but has conditions to suit. A strongly run mile on good ground is just the job on a galloping course. Bopedro has shown a liking for Newmarket around both the July and Rowley mile courses. He has won on both courses and placed third on his other runs on each course. I think he is well drawn high in stall 14 with pace around him from stalls 16 & 17. Bopedro should be fit and ready following two runs on the all-weather at Lingfield.

Dan Skelton's stable remains in top form with Kateira winning at Aintree today. A lot of focus is on the Cheltenham winning mare Limerick Lace; however, I prefer Dan's mare Galia Des Liteaux. She loves testing going which she gets and ran a serious good trial when second, beaten only l in the Classic Chase at Warwick in January. She carried top weight of 11-10 that day, conceding 20lbs to winner My Silver Lining. Galia Des Liteaux wore first time pieces at Warwick on her eight starts over fences. I am prepared to forgive her last run at Exeter when well held in a mare only chase. Surely, connections had an eye on the National and didn't want to go any higher in the ratings than her current mark of 146.

The Willie Mullins trained Monkfish is a classy horse that injury has prevented racing that often. He ran so well to win the Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park in January. I felt he would run a big race in the Gold Cup however he jumped as poor as I have ever seen Monkfish jump! Willie seems to think he is working as well as ever, and he is a fresh horse reverting back to hurdles. Paul Townend rides and with the Mullins horses on fire this week at Aintree I can see Monkfish bounce back to form at a good price.

Anthony Honeyball's Sam Brown is a massive price even if carrying top weight. He loves this type of ground and finished with a wet sail when fifth behind stable-mate Forward Plan in the Coral Trophy chase at Kempton in late February. Freddie Gingell rode him to win nicely over three miles at Ascot on good ground which proved how healthy this twelve-year-old remains this season. The handicapper has raised him three lbs he looks nicely treated with his jockeys claim against some of the opposition including stable-mate Forward Plan. This extended three miles on soft ground will give him plenty of time to gallop home strongly up the long finishing straight at Aintree.

Ben Pauling continued his great season winning the mares bumper today at Aintree. Densworth is of interest in this conditional jockey only two-mile handicap. He flopped in this race last season finishing off his race tamely. No surprise to find out he had a wind operation thereafter. He remains a lightly raced 7yo who returned at Doncaster last month with a facile 16 length win over stable-mate Getway Drumlee on heavy ground. The runner-up franked the form winning easily next time out and is currently rated 10lbs higher. Densworth handles testing conditions out of top sire Kayf Tara. He loves testing ground and jumps well with lots of experience. Empire Steel likes racing left-handed and has run big races on relatively flat courses. He finished second in the Rowland Meyrick chase at Wetherby over Christmas when conceding a mountain of weight to the winner mare, Fountain Collonges. There is lots of pace in this race with Shakem Up’Arry, Frero Banbou, The Edgar Wallace, etc and the race could well setup nicely for a closer like Empire Steel at a big price.

He finished runner-up to Sine Nominee at Wetherby in February and that winner won the Hunters chase at Cheltenham.
