Essex's opening pair made 110 between them, but they still lost their opening game. That's a worry, as I'm not sure what is expected from the opening pair to get a win. Hants were disappointing in their opener, going down to Somerset. However, Somerset are a strong side, and last year's beaten finalists can bounce back.

Kalinskaya is just 1??"4 at the French Open and doesn't play an awful lot of clay tennis. Boisson is in poor form but has been out for seven months with injury. Last year she had an improbable run to the semis, and with guaranteed home support I expect her to give it her all once again and can upset a fragile-looking favorite.
13:00 Sebastian Baez vs Roman Andres Burruchaga

Sebastian Baez

Baez has had a disappointing clay-court swing, 8??"10, after a fine hard-court start to the year. That's unusual, as clay looks his best surface. With the courts playing fast, his hard-court form could be vital. Burruchaga has never won a Grand Slam main-draw match, and the faster courts won't favour him.

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo is a quality clay player but has never played in the main draw of a Grand Slam. He faces a tough opponent in Norrie, who is vastly more experienced and has a knack for grinding out Grand Slam wins. The quicker courts won't favour Vallejo, so I think Norrie will do his usual grinding away, making this a long match.

Elsa Jacquemot has no form coming into this, losing all five clay matches. She faces a tricky opponent in Linda Fruhvirtova, who has shown flashes of brilliance but isn't climbing the rankings as she’d like due to inconsistent performances. She breezed through qualifying, and her last-16 win at the Australian (2023) shows she has a big-game temperament.

Kopriva is a solid, reliable clay-courter with recent wins over Andrey Rublev, Luciano Darderi, and Fábián Marozsán. I expect him to play to his usual level, which will make him tough to beat. Moutet doesn't look in good form, losing four on the trot and winning just one set. Unless he finds his very best form, he looks vulnerable in this one.

The pair met recently in Rome with Li winning in three sets. What's interesting is that both players won exactly 83 points, which indicates this could be close. Li is the clear favorite, but although erratic Zhang has shown that she is capable of purple patches, which should ensure this goes over.

Facundo Díaz Acosta has been winning for fun on clay, holding a 28??"4 win/loss record. Admittedly, he has been playing at Challenger level, but he plays a player in Zhang who is badly out of form on the clay, losing 6 of his last 9 matches. It's not that he has had tough draws either, as he has lost to some lowly ranked players.

Since making the semis in 2021, Maria Sakkari has won just one match in her last four attempts. She faces a difficult first-round opponent in Noskova. Noskova is a solid top-15 player these days and is very capable on clay. With Sakkari having lost six of her seven matches, all in straight sets, I don't see her causing an upset.

Tabilo struggles to bring his best game to majors, losing 6 of his last 7 matches. Majchrzak, by contrast, performs well in the big events. Majchrzak's recent results don't look great, but he's put up good efforts against solid clay courters in slow conditions. With the courts playing fast, I expect him to give a good account of himself.

Felix Auger-Aliassime has lost in the first round of the French in four of his previous six appearances. His general Grand Slam performances are worse than expected, and he's already gone out in round 1 of the Australian this year. Daniel Altmaier seems to raise his level in slams and often gives a good account of himself against higher-ranked players. I think he can trouble Felix Auger-Aliassime, who isn't playing well and has too often suffered from cramping during matches.

I love watching Mannarino play with his extraordinary unorthodox game. However, clay simply isn't his surface. There were more positive signs last time against Collington. After losing the first set 6-3, he battled hard in set two, leading 5-2 before succumbing in a tiebreak. That is encouraging, as is the fact the courts are playing fast, which should enable him to play his usual game. Humbert himself isn't a natural clay player, so I see this going over.

I'm not at all tempted by Berrettini at 1.5. He just doesn't look at the races at the moment and has been played off court too many times. His fitness levels don't look great, so if this turns into a grind I'd oppose him. Fucsovics is struggling for wins, losing all three clay games this season. Brighton could drop out of the European spots altogether or make the Conference League, Europa League, or even the Champions League depending on other results. If Villa lose against Man City and Liverpool beat Brentford, a win would take them into the much-coveted Champions League place as long as Bournemouth lose. They should fancy their chances against a Man Utd side that will finish third no matter what. It won't be easy, though, as United have scored in 25 of their last 26 matches.
