New Zealand were better than expected against Iran, but this is a step up in class. Egypt are a solid-looking side and pose a serious goal threat with Marmoush, Salah, and Ziko. I don't see New Zealand being able to keep them quiet.

We've seen how good Marmoush can be with his exploits at Man City. He is likely to lead the attack again for Egypt and had five shots against Belgium. Against a weaker and leaky New Zealand side, I think he can score.

23:00 Uruguay v Cape Verde

Uruguay #1-0

50 WIN

@+419

Lose

Uruguay had 27 shots against Saudi Arabia with 10 on target. Despite that, they could manage just one goal. Cape Verde frustrated Spain and held them to a shock 0-0 draw. I expect the same tactics today, with them offering little going forward but being resolute in defence. Therefore, a narrow 1-0 win looks on the cards.

Cape Verde managed just one corner against Spain, but it was little wonder as they had just 26% possession and rarely ventured forward. They should get a bit more of the ball today and win a few more corners, particularly if they go behind. Uruguay had an impressive 14 corners against Saudi Arabia, so are capable of covering this line by themselves.

Jacob Bridgeman missed the cut in his only start here but is better than that. Accurate approach play and putting are essential this weekend, and Bridgeman excels in both. His putting is elite, ranking 3rd for SG: Putting on the tour. If he can handle the difficult greens, he could figure it out this weekend.

Ryan Gerard

Ryan Gerard is an elite driver, but his approach play and putting seem to have come on of late, making him of interest. He was second going into the final round at the Charles Schwab, but a poor final round dropped him to 10th. Last time out, though, at the Memorial he did even better, finishing second after a playoff. He's clearly in fine form, so can outperform his odds.

Wyndham Clark

Wyndham Clark won in 2023, so obviously has the ability to go well here. He enters in fine form. He won the recent Bryan Nelson CJ Cup, was third at the Memorial, and last week was 2nd going into the last round, but a poor Sunday dropped him to 11th. He is one of the best putters around, which should stand him in good stead for around here.

Since switching to the LIV Tour, Smith's form has clearly deteriorated. There have been positive signs of late, though, with four top-10s from his last 12. Dario Herrera is the ref who can go card-crazy far too often. He is averaging 5.7 cards per game this year and last year averaged 6, so the players had better watch out. Belgium, for all their attractive play, do pick up their fair share of yellows. They got two against Egypt, both for holding; a similar total wouldn't surprise. Iran could be under constant pressure, so look sure to receive some.

The minnows have largely done well at the World Cup, so I wouldn't rule out Saudi Arabia from getting something out of this. They were dogged in the draw with Uruguay and, last December, had a good upset win over a talented Ivory Coast side, so they can raise their game when need be. Spain are a significantly stronger side but often overpass the ball and lack a cutting edge. They could easily run away with this, but at 11.00 I'm willing to bet on them underperforming again.

Spain can get tetchy, especially if things aren't going their way, with tripping and holding. I therefore wouldn't rule them out of getting a card or two. Saudi Arabia have two or three card magnets in their side, so they could even cross this line by themselves.

Monaghan were dreadful in the league campaign but look a lot stronger now. They were slick and controlled in the second half when beating Roscommon and look to have found their best form. Westmeath have been a surprise package this season, but they haven't the deepest squad and they have several injury concerns for this one. I think Westmeath have over-performed and an improving Monaghan side will best them.

50 WIN

@+108

Win

St Helens have been disappointing this season and come into this losing their last three. I'm not too bothered about those defeats, though, as Leeds are quality. Warrington always beat St Helens, and Castleford are hugely erratic and capable of pulling off impressive wins. Huddersfield look the worst side in the league. In their last two games they conceded 36 points to both Toulouse and Hull, two struggling sides. Prior to that, Rhinos thrashed them 52-0. Although St Helens have been far from convincing, they have the quality to run away with this.

Sykes is displaying fine form, beating Springer in round 1 with a 103 average and Schindler with a 95 average. That's not his normal average, and I doubt he can keep it up. Menzies brushed aside Price 6-1 with a 106 average and banged in seven 180s in eight legs. No matter how well Sykes plays, I don't see him beating Menzies in this form.

It's been a disappointing campaign for Storm, with them sitting 12th. However, they've been more solid of late, winning 4 of their last 5, and a top-8 place is still possible with a good run. Raiders have looked unimpressive when I've seen them, and a Storm side building momentum should prevail.

New Zealand Warriors -8.50

Cowboys have been inconsistent this season and were poor in their last two games. They lost by 14 to a not-very-strong Raiders side and, last time, were badly outclassed by the Dolphins on their own patch. The meters they made in possession were poor, and they never looked competitive. Warriors are strong this season and are capable of putting weaker sides to the sword.
05:00 Tunisia v Japan

After a 5-1 thrashing by Sweden, Tunisia took the controversial decision to sack their coach mid-tournament. Whether that results in an improved performance remains to be seen. Referee István Kovács of Romania has the honour of refereeing his 1,000th World Cup match, and I don't see that honour holding him back from showing cards. He has a wealth of experience but doesn't shy away from booking players. Over his career he has averaged 5.3 yellow cards per game. Tunisia had just one yellow against Sweden but easily could have had more, and as the deficit rose their commitment waned. I can see them picking up cards today. Japan don't usually pick up many, but even one may be enough to at least reach three.

Ecuador are a tough side to break down. So despite Curaçao getting a surprise goal against Germany, I don't see them repeating that feat. Ning Ma of China takes charge and hasn't been shy to show cards. In his five games this year he showed 26 yellows and a red, and last year showed 89 yellows and a red from 18 games. Players will obviously have to be on their guard in this one. I don't know whether Curaçao realistically believe they can progress in the group, but if they do this is a game they must get something out of. Conversely, Ecuador really ought to be eyeing all three points. I therefore can see plenty of tough tackles, trips, etc., taking this over.

21:00 Germany v Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast needed a last-minute goal to get past Ecuador, and this looks a lot tougher. You can't read too much into Germany's 7-1 thrashing of Curaçao, but they are in fine form, winning 10 on the trot and banging in the goals in the process. Although Ivory Coast themselves are in fine form, I think Germany will be too strong.

Felix Nmecha is given the freedom to push forward more for Brazil than his club Dortmund. Ivory Coast picked up three first-half cards against Ecuador but calmed down a tad in the second half, although they appeared to get away with a couple. Germany are bound to put them under plenty of pressure, and Ivory Coast do have a habit of picking up cheap cards by tripping. Germany aren't immune to yellow cards, picking up nine from their six qualification games, so 3+ looks likely.

Two very unpredictable sides and you never really know how they'll play on any given day. Castleford have been thumped 72-6 by Warrington, 34-0 by Wakefield, 50-10 by Hull and 50-6 by KR. On the flip side they've beaten Wigan by 10 and St Helens by 20. Toulouse have largely struggled at this level but have won their last two away games and beat Castleford by 12 earlier in the season. Sweden were dreadful in qualifying, but Graham Potter has gotten a fine tune out of them of late. They won their two qualifying games against Poland and Ukraine, scoring three goals in each. They opened their account at the World Cup with an impressive 5-1 win over Tunisia. They may have been flattered by a poor Tunisia side, but they looked like a side full of goals, with Premier League players Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres posing a serious threat.
