03:00 Sweden v Tunisia

Sweden

Sweden were awful in World Cup qualifying, not winning a single game and picking up just 2 points. However, because of their Nations League performance they got to play in the playoffs. Graham Potter took over and things picked up, with them qualifying by beating Poland and Ukraine, scoring three in each. They look like a team with newfound confidence and can beat a Tunisia side that looks a bit limited when coming up against European opposition.

Tunisia didn't concede a goal in qualifying, so they may be tough to break down. The most likely Sweden player to do so would be Gyökeres. He is likely going to start alongside Isak but was more impressive last season. He scored 14 Premier League goals for Arsenal, as well as 5 Champions League goals. He scored 5 goals over his last three starts for Sweden, so I like his chances.

Kyle Daukaus is on a six-fight winning run and has been in with some tough guys. He's a wily campaigner and will be tough to put away. It looks a step up for Garcia on paper, but he's beaten some solid fighters and looks a lively outsider in this one. I have little doubt he will win the exchanges on the feet. He takes surprisingly little damage and throws an abundance of quality punches and kicks. Even if not finishing his opponent, he should impress the judges. Lopes has to take this to the mat to win, in my opinion, but that won't be easy with Garcia's defence.

Netherlands are around evens to win, but this looks far from straightforward. Japan were the first team to qualify for the World Cup, doing so with three games to spare. Minnows Curaçao look hopelessly out of their depth in this one. They came through qualification unbeaten, but that was against very weak sides. Recent 5??"1 defeats to Australia and 4??"1 to Scotland show their limitations. Germany have won nine on the trot, including a 6??"0 hiding of Slovakia. They may be able to beat weak sides, but recent 5??"1 defeat to Australia and 4??"1 to Scotland expose their weaknesses. Germany did have a bad patch when losing three on the trot but shook that off by winning their next nine, banging in the goals. It's been a similar situation this time, with him suffering an Achilles injury ruling him out until late May. The main thing is he's made it, and he will do his utmost to make the most of the opportunity. He should be very busy against a Turkish side that push forward in numbers, so he will be a busy man and have to make several tackles he may not want to. There has been money for Haiti, but for the life of me I can't see why. Admittedly Scotland have a poor record at the World Cup finals and have lost to sides like Costa Rica and, more notably, Peru in 1978. They seem a more reliable side these days and look on a different level to Haiti. Yes, Haiti did beat New Zealand 4-0 in a warm-up, but the Kiwis didn't play anywhere near as solidly as they did against England, so I'm not reading too much into that. The only half-decent side they beat was in qualifying, was Cosat Rica with the rest of the games being against sides ranked in the 100s. They look out of their depth.

Latvia snuck past Italy 4-3 but lost last time by the same score to Trinidad and Tobago with a disappointing 79 average. France qualified with a stunning comeback from 3-0 down to Austria, producing an 86 average. Thibault Tricole and Nicolas Thuillier look the more reliable pair, so I expect them to prevail.

Poland are a solid team with Krzysztof Ratajski and Sebastian Bia?ecki, but I'm not sure about them being favourites against Ireland. Mansell and O'Connor are both experienced, capable players. They missed a whole host of doubles against Gibraltar (75% missed) but still averaged 91.73 in winning 4-2. I don't expect their doubling to be as bad over this distance. Poland are solid enough, but if Ireland are clinical today on the doubles, I think they win.

Sharks are under-strength and should be susceptible to the Warriors' attack. The Warriors have shown strong home form and should have too much power going forward for the Sharks.

USA love to attack, and in front of their fans will want to start with a bang. The problem is that they don't defend well, with 6 of their last 7 games going over 2.5 goals. Paraguay can be defensively minded, but I don't see them keeping the US out, so they will have to go forward. I see goals.

Balogun has played 13 times for the US since 2024, scoring 6 goals in the process. Last season for Monaco he netted 13 times from 30 games and should get chances today. Paraguay are a strong side at their own ground, but overall aren't looking strong. I see goals for the USA.

USA love to push forward and this often brings corners. An example of this was last time against Germany when they won 10. Paraguay are a tad erratic, as they often play defensively. But when on the front foot, they can win their fair share. As I expect the USA to score, Paraguay may be forced forward as well, taking the total over.

The teams met in a "friendly" in November, but it was anything but friendly, with six yellows and a red. If a friendly can produce that many, then surely 3.5 looks achievable. In Paraguay's recent friendly with Morocco there were nine bookings, with Paraguay accounting for six.

Argentina had a disappointing 3-1 loss to Serbia, but they were competitive and can build on that. They are a decent side on their day, as seen at last year's World Championships where they won all their group games before unluckily running into Italy, who went on to become World Champions. Iran look pretty limited, so this looks winnable for the Argentinians.
