Desert Cop

Daily Racing

50 WINNAP

@+1600

-50

Desert Cop can be tried at odds of 16-1 in a seven-runner race. Handicap mark has dropped from a high of 100 a year ago to OR89 today. Solid effort when third of nine over course and distance on the penultimate start. Lesser effort at Newbury next time feasibly came too soon (five days) after that race. This looks relatively thin fare for a Class 2 contest, and Desert Cop has to come into consideration. Neil Callan rides this six-year-old sprinter by Oasis Dream for trainer George Baker.

Trainer Lizzie Quinlan has had two winners from her last three runners. Clonakilty got badly handicapped having won a number of times over fences for Olly Murphy. Nathan Moscrop takes over from an amateur rider for this ten-year-old's first try in a handicap. Easy (21 lengths) winner of a point for this small stable of Annabelle Sovray. The stable is yet to have a winner under rules but has gone within a neck of success in a similar race. Imperial Imp looks to have a chance in an ultimately low-grade handicap hurdle. A trip of 2m6f is likely to suit well.

Stall 5 not ideal but Bishopton still makes appeal at 16-1 or bigger. This 4yo by Invincible Spirit has looked progressive in winning three times over seven furlongs within the last year. A good few very promising youthful sorts line up for this 1m6f Class 2 staying handicap but Oneforthegutter has dropped to two pounds below last winning mark which came over similar trip and going (1m6f, GF) at Newmarket last July. Entitled to progress for seasonal reappearance there last time (good race but trip too short and unfancied in the market). Useful sort on his day, trained by Ian Williams whose forte is staying types. Interesting on first visit to Goodwood which isn't for every horse. Chance even in this progressive looking company.

Argentine Tango is by Mattmu who was also trained by Tim Easterby. Had a cracking, lengthy 2yo season including a Listed win and second in the Molecomb at Goodwood. Good run in the Prix Sigy at Chantilly in April (beaten a length at 45-1) and maybe found six furlongs too far at Goodwood last time. Could take to Haydock's five furlongs and receives six pounds or more from all due to age and gender.

Glyfada is an interesting filly. Nicely bred by Camelot. Her first maiden was against some classy sorts, probably a stronger race than this, and she toughed it out to finish second there despite running green. Greenness was again very apparent when she hit the front at Naas one furlong out and didn't appear to handle the lack of racing company. She has a great deal of talent, but there were worrying signs in that last race. The drop back to 1 mile seems odd but might help her retain focus.
