Fontaine Collonges

Daily Racing

50 WINNAP

-50

Fontaine Collonges is the outsider here but has five wins from 13 starts over fences. The ten-year-old clearly likes it at Haydock (twice a winner of the Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase held in November here over the shorter 3m1f). Sent off 7-2 Fav for this race two years ago. Has struggled over the extended trip in the past although the damsire Dom Alco offers hope he can stay. Presence of stablemate Royale Pagaille at the head of the handicap here means five horses drop out of the handicap proper and Fontaine gets to carry just 10-11, 17lbs less than Royale Pagaille before Ned Fox's allowance of 3lbs is taken into consideration. Didn't look up for the Welsh National last time (slow early but did get involved at one stage) but carried 11-11 there. Might offer some value at 25-1 off a lower weight at the 10yo's favourite track.

A Class 3 handicap hurdle just short of three miles. Bective Abbey is the rather unexposed Nicky Henderson trained favourite, alotted a handicap rating of 114 which looks a pretty workable mark. Comfortable winner of a maiden hurdle at Warwick last time at odds of 8-1. Upped a further half mile now and takes a sizeable step up in grade. Did run a little keen last time so hopefully that won't be a problem. Nico De Boinville (SR 20%) is up here and the money, while tentative, is beginning to come in for the Henderson handicap hurdle play. There are some good horses in this Class 3 race but Bective Abbey (who should on pedigree be suited by an extended trip) can, if he has ability as is proposed, benefit from this relatively low-looking handicap mark.

Nicky Richards trained Nab Wood is taken to score in this Class 4 handicap hurdle. The 8yo by Court Cave has won 2 of 7 starts over hurdles, two smart wins over 2m6f at Kelso in January and February last year from ratings of 108 and 114. Excuse on return (hit by a hurdle panel which sounds like it might hurt) and ran a head second in a decent contest at Ayr last time (Class 3, 2m4f, OR122). The step up in trip is certainly worth trying. As well backed as any in this quite open looking contest. Up 2lbs to OR124 but only carries 11-01. Looking for a first win this season. Soft ground pretty suitable.

Former course and distance winner Birkenhead returns from a fair break of 130 days for in-form trainer Paul Midgley and jockey David Nolan (SR 20%). Career strike rate of 10 wins from 71 starts. Still just eight years old and a winner of two of his last five races back in the summer, over 5f at Lingfield (OR63) and 5f at Catterick (OR67). Runs off OR68 here and this very speedy son of Captain Gerrard looks a big price on return. Could be capable of getting away from a decent field in this Class 5 contest to close the card at Newcastle.

First reserve, so Winemaker needs one to drop out, but an interesting entry. Course and distance winner off OR66 last year (carried 9-12) before winning over 5f (OR70). Now back down to a rating of 59, and capable apprentice Nicola Burns (SR 33%) takes off a 7lbs allowance. Diego Dias trains. Good draw in stall 4. A little outpaced in a decent 6f contest here a month ago. That was a respectable effort. 2 wins from 12 starts on the all-weather. 20-1 looks a big price.

The 4.05 at Clonmel sees another Terence O'Brien favourite, also a last time out winner, this one partnered by apprentice John Shinnick. Won first chase start at Cork 27 days ago fairly smoothly and looks to have been given a workable handicap mark. Drop back from 2m4f to 2 miles will likely suit (he was in front from 3 out last time). Not much market interest for any of the runners the night before. Robert Tyner's Crecora Hills nibbled at. Gavin Cromwell's Jouster has ability as does Emmet Mcnamara trained Mount Ferns. He was a smart winner, I think, on first run for this yard at Listowel over hurdles in September. Jumping possibly a bit sketchy but he's tried over fences first time today. The pick is the Terence O'Brien runner, Jay Pee M, at 9-2.

Flash Du Pistolet brings me to this race but I am not following him off this cliff (three miles please, Stuart). Two of market interest are Six One Nine (C&D winner and won here off this mark on heavy ground last season) and Diamond Mix. Diamond Mix is a Paul Robson (not Pauline, but Craig Nichol rides so related, I suspect (?)) trained six year-old who has little form to recommend but is a strongly backed springer in the market. The 16s has gone on OLBG for Diamond Mix so I'll play the Chris Grant trained Six One Nine. It's a pretty reliable yard when the money is down. Danny McMenamin (SR 21%) rides.

The 3:30 at Clonmel, a handicap hurdle over 2m3f, looks an open race with 13 runners declared. A few have been backed a little early doors: Bossofthebus, Person Of Interest, and Pana To Milan. Top weight Person Of Interest hasn't had much racing and has run well on two starts in handicap company at a fair level this season. Bossofthebus won last time out over C&D. An experienced amateur jockey takes the reins from an apprentice. Respected, fairly big stable of Terence O'Brien. Pana To Milan's smaller yard is going well, but I'd be surprised if the well-traveled 5yo can cut it against Bossofthebus who, officially up 7lbs, looks a decent play to go in a second time in a row.

Nordic Passage's odds have been volatile in the early betting market for this race. Likely to be strongly backed, I suspect. Drawn 7, which is fine. Ten-year-old rated 47 now and looks extremely well handicapped. Former peak career rating of 96. Neve Bennett claims a seven-pound allowance. Returned from a break of 102 days with a strong run last time over 5f (this 6f will suit better) for the same useful apprentice jockey, closing at the finish. Last win was in a Class 4 AW handicap at Newcastle (6f) in August 2023 off OR70. Ran some good races on the turf in 2024 and is likely very capable of scoring today.

The Sussex National didn't go well for me. The JP McManus owned, Nick Gifford trained (odd combination) favourite is respected here (3 out of 3 over fences with conditions to suit) as is Havaila with Harry Cobden booked for Gary & Josh Moore. Those two market leaders are low in the handicap but a chance is taken on the more experienced Bells of Peterboro. The Tim Vaughan trained 10yo has won 5 and placed on 14 other occasions in 37 races. Heavy ground might see him to best effect (hasn't run well in three starts this year). Stable had a recent winner over a marathon trip. Peak rating over hurdles was 128 and runs here off OR115. Won over fences at Chepstow in April 2024 off OR118 (3m). I imagine this horse's starting price might be bigger than 16-1 but there are reasons to hope he hasn't shown his best at chasing yet.

I will be cheering on Presenting Doy, an Owner's Group horse, here. Connections were thrilled with the mare's run in what turned out to be a surprisingly competitive novices hurdle at Warwick on debut under Rules. Speedy against the clock too. There wasn't much between the first four and the Nicky Henderson trained winner, That's Nice (a previous winner), looks useful. This looks a much easier contest. Emma Lavelle trained (SR 21%) and Harry Cobden (SR 16%) rides. Presenting Doy is a nice type who could be useful over fences in time hopefully. Jumped her hurdles really well on debut. Should score here but no certainty and somewhat prohibitive odds. Just Her Type is likely next best after a good second at Ayr on rules debut (mares novices hurdle like this) last time, while Taxus Boccata can go well at bigger odds.

The Sussex National. No inspection. I would have guessed the ground would be bottomless, but what do I know; I only live here. Maybe not. A good few contenders and possibles. Supervisor is by Flemensfirth, so likely stays all day. Venetia Williams (SR 28%) trains and Charlie Deutsch (SR 17%) rides. Two wins from ten starts over fences - 12 lengths winner at Ludlow (3m, soft) off OR96 and 6 length winner at Wincanton (3m1f, soft) off OR108 last season. Fair run when second of four at Warwick last time, and he probably came up against a winner at the top of his game that day (3m, soft, OR114). Up a further pound in the ratings today but only carries 10-08 due to the presence of stablemate Chambard in the field. So Said I has an intriguing profile and drops in class for this race (market support; trainer Joe Tizzard in form). Morfee is out of a Robin Des Champs mare (stays; jumps well). Both have low weights and are solid contenders. I'll stick with Supervisor as my NAP and am happy to get on at odds of 14-1.

Interesting race. A Class 3 handicap chase but for novices at near three miles. This trip looks ideal for Saint Davy. His biggest success to date came at Class 1 (Grade 3) level when winning a competitive handicap hurdle at Sandown back in February from OR130 (Hermino Aa, Ed Keeper, West Balboa all behind). That was on good-soft ground. Two starts over fences have been at Class 1 (Grade 2) level and the third place (beaten four lengths) to Handstands and Resplendent Grey at Sandown in December is strong form. Outpaced and fell last time over a shorter trip, Handstands the winner again. This is easier. Has to give weight away off top weight of OR137 but at most eight pounds. Easy to back the night before (10.0 on Betfair) but betting market on the day likely to prove more significant. Good horses here so maybe not NAP material but Saint Davy (4 wins from 8 races) has some class.

Apples Jane is the first foal from Apples Jade, so she's an exciting newcomer. A 7-pound claimer is up but has ridden plenty of winners and has a 15% strike rate this season. A forecast on the first two in the market, though they bring quite different profiles into the race, might be the way to go. Secret Squirrel remains well handicapped on his last win at this level (beat the very smart Kabral Du Mathan last time - it didn't look quite as comfortable a win as today's Racing Post suggests), but Joyeuse has the look of a Nicky Henderson handicap hurdle special. Didn't look at peak fitness when second to the smart Celtic Dino on first start this season. Travelled much better when second to Gordon Elliott's Wodhooh at Cheltenham 56 days ago. The third that day, Take No Chances, turned over Kargese at Ascot last week in a Class 1 mares hurdle. Joyeuse is just one pound off bottom weight here. Charlie Appleby (SR 35%) often sends horses to all-weather circuits for one reason or another. Back in October the then two year-old Dubawi gelding (gelded at a young age actually) Tremorgio won a Class 3 maiden by 2.5 lengths. That form is easily the strongest on offer here, although Atlantic Sunset and Broker Charlie both put in decent efforts more recently. This is quite similar to my previous NAP that was a non-runner at Doncaster. Dan Skelton trained. Actually Fortune De Mer looks a better proposition than the cancelled NAP. Has run really well in two bumper contests (second and first) at Cheltenham at a vastly higher grade than this. A Listed winner last time. Most of the rivals today are making their debuts under Rules. Kim Bailey trains a Point winner, Island Bridge. Little money so far for the Nicky Henderson trained horse. St Jessica, a Ben (is it?) Ran second to a promising Nicky Henderson trained mare at Class 2 level on penultimate start. Apparently going easily, still on the bridle and jumping well prior to a fall at the third last hurdle last time out in a similar race to this. Two decent Flat horses oppose. Stress-Free was a beaten favourite on debut in this sphere but has potential. Today's opposing Nicky Henderson mare (by The Grey Gatsby) has been very weak in the pre-race betting market. Off to Ludlow for a 2-mile novices' handicap hurdle. I'm a keen viewer of Betfair betting patterns. Most of the betting on these horses totals to around my average spend on a trip to Caffè Nero. Betting on Venetia Williams' French import King of Records (the value bet here, I suspect) would get you a very low-grade DJ mixer on eBay if you wanted one. Betting on the favorite is getting up towards my total riches. This is quite late in the night before the day of the race. Ben Pauling trained racehorse, a winning pointer who beat the experienced George's Lad by 1 length on debut, and that horse has won a fairly decent class 3 maiden hurdle since. Talking of money, I wouldn't bet the house on this six-year-old, but Vanderpoel is today's NAP.

Just four years old so gets a significant weight advantage here due to young age. Rated 114 and should have a good chance carrying 10-13. Interesting profile. Won four of five Flat races at a low grade for Michael Bell last year and since purchased by JP McManus. Odds-on win at Chepstow on debut over hurdles in October. The 8yo, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Harry Cobden won a Listed bumper at Ascot in December 2021, won a Grade 2 novices hurdle over 2m4f here in December 2022 but really excelled when upped to 3 miles on heavy ground here last time out. Afadil looks well handicapped on a rating of 120. Solid efforts at the Cheltenham (ran fifth in the County Hurdle) and Aintree Festivals followed last year's win. Two okay runs in decent company at Ascot this year before a stinker at Southwell last time. A line can be put through that - a funny race where Afadil was one to go the wrong side. It's a promising sign that he returns to course and distance quickly. The trip here should be ideal (he stays six furlongs). Has always had ability. Originally with Godolphin and Charlie Appleby. Strong winner of a Class 4 novice stakes here as a 3yo on first run for this yard. Second in two turf races over 6 furlongs at Class 4 level off a mark of 78 last summer. Handicap mark dropped to 73 now and should be competitive in 0-75 Class 5 grade. Stable's horses are running well with a few going close while still looking for a winner this season. This ten furlong handicap could be more open than the initial betting forecast suggests. Theophilos is interesting. This 6yo Teofilo gelding is having his first Flat/AW run for the yard today. Formerly with Johnny Murtagh, he won his second start in handicaps off OR61 and twice ran a neck second on turf over a similar trip to this from ratings of 72 and 73. Has had four maiden hurdle outings since joining Gerard Keane and sent off at lengthy odds each time (probably a prospect over handicap hurdles to come). Runs off a mark of 71 today with Jack Kearney taking off 5lbs. Seems fit enough judged on recent maiden hurdle run (8th of 21 17 days ago). Highly regarded dual purpose trainer and useful apprentice jockey are the connections. Theophilos has quite strong form and looks a tempting price here. Just two runs this season, a win at Chepstow over a similar trip (Il Ridoto well behind that day but the weights are 3lbs in favor of Grandeur Dame here) and then a run over course and distance when 13 lengths fifth behind Gemirande last time (8lbs better off for that defeat). That wasn't a bad effort which included a couple of slight jumping errors and just the sense there could be more to come from his unchanged handicap mark, especially with a clearer round of jumping. Tom Cannon (SR 15%) back in the saddle today (has won on the horse twice before). Four wins from 12 chase starts. Goes on any ground, ideally perhaps preferring some cut. Just four pounds higher than previous winning mark from penultimate outing, looks better handicapped than many of today's opponents. Has shown a lot of promise in the past and can definitely get involved in the outcome of this Premier Handicap Chase.

Gwennie May Jem is the choice to score in this moderate looking 18-runner handicap hurdle at Doncaster. Choice of six newspaper tipsters. Five year old gelding running for Dan Skelton (SR 19%) who stepped up on maiden and novice hurdle form to run third of nine on first start in handicap company at Uttoxeter in early November. Has been given time to progress since then and the step up in trip looks likely to bring out better form. Unchanged mark of 77 leaves Gwennie May Jem close to the bottom of this handicap, looking well handicapped against rivals who haven't shown so much racecourse form. Harry Skelton (SR 21%) rides. Looks a fair play for the win at 4-1.

Galon De Vauzelle strikes me as interesting here in an open-looking handicap hurdle over 3 miles. Trainer Philip Rothwell (SR 19%) and 4lbs claiming jockey Tiernan Power Roche (SR 25%) are once again back among the winners. The nine-year-old has been focused on chasing over the last two years and has seemingly improved in that time, running decently enough in a Listed contest when last seen in December and a winner over 3 miles in September. Not raced over hurdles since 2022. The nine-year-old's record over timber is two wins from 13 starts (both wins at Ballinrobe 2m6f). Official mark just 3lbs above last winning hurdles mark from 2022. Chasing efforts show the horse as a proven stayer over this 3-mile trip now. With the stable in strong form, Galon De Vauzelle could easily run a big race. Rated 13lbs lower over hurdles than fences.

Gaassee is a 7yo by Sea The Stars who won four of his first five races as a youngster when with William Haggas, winning by five lengths over 1m4f on sole previous run at Kempton. Ran third in the Class 2 Old Newton Cup at Haydock and reached a peak career rating of 103. Disappointing since as handicap mark has fallen to today's mark of 85 (one pound out of the handicap proper here). Makes second start for Newmarket yard of Jack Morland. Callum Shepherd (SR 20%) rides. Fourth of nine in a decent Class 3 handicap at Southwell earlier this month. First start back in a good while so entitled to progress 18 days later. Interesting from low in the handicap with clear signs of market interest.

Five places available to each-way backers and some of the outsiders make feasible propositions. Monty's Way was a 40-1 winner at Ballinrobe (2m1f, Yielding) in May last year. Carl Millar looks a good jockey booking with his 5lbs allowance. Monty's Way pulled up in just one race since in October. Formerly won two of six Flat races for Joseph O'Brien. Monty's Way has shown moderate promise in this sphere and has had to wait for handicap rating to drop in the past. Won off a mark of 92 last year and is probably capable of running a big race from a rating of 98 with Carl Millar's 5lbs claim considered. Conditions look suitable.

Apple's Angel is well handicapped here, running off a mark of 86 and in receipt of weight from all rivals. 28-1 winner on handicap debut back in October at Chelmsford 6f (OR47). Recent outings are nothing to write home about but not beaten far (four lengths 5th of 8) considering she ran quite keen in a first-time hood last time. The hood is retained while Josephine Gordon (SR 11%) comes in for the ride. Handicap mark dropped 2 lbs, and Apple's Angel is interesting, getting more than a stone off most of these. One of just two previous winners in this field of three-year-olds.

Presenting Doy is an interesting newcomer, but it is hard to oppose the odds-on That's Nice running for Nicky Henderson. Strong point winner who won a novice hurdle over course and distance in November. The first two went 20 lengths clear of the third that day, and That's Nice went easily throughout, just being asked to quicken very late on. Mysteriously disappointing at Cheltenham next time out but given a break since. Looks most likely to return to winning ways.

Trainer Kerry Lee (SR 50%) is in good, winning form and excels at training horses over marathon trips, preferably on soft ground. Not Sure is a 9-year-old by Presenting with 3 wins from 12 chase starts. Finest effort to date is probably the fourth-place finish in Nassalam's Welsh National (Dec 23). Carried a low weight there but ran from a rating of 127. Looks well handicapped here off last winning mark of OR110 (that win over 3 miles at Wetherby in Nov 2023). Jumped okay but faded quickly on first seasonal start at Hereford last time. Fair each-way claims here.

12-1 is a big price for Imagine. Winner of two chases on soft ground for Gordon Elliott last season, including at Grade 2 level, this is his second start for Harry Derham, having run in the Grade 3 Paddy Power Gold Cup at Ascot on first outing for the yard. Disappointing there (well backed, started at 6-1) and trainer reported he would appreciate softer going underfoot. The weights here look favorable. Carries just 10-06 off a mark of 144. Winner of two of four starts over fences so far, Imagine has class (former Cheltenham Festival fifth) and potential. Interesting.

Dan Skelton (SR 19%) trained 9yo Flegmatik ran his best race for some time in the Grade 3 Silver Cup over three miles here last time. He is the best-backed horse in this race. Reached a peak rating of 143 in April last year, but following a run of poor form, the handicap mark has dropped down to 132. Only allotted 10-04 in this chase and Tristan Durrell claims a further 3lbs allowance. Drop in trip from 3m to 2m5f should suit. Makes a decent proposition at 6-1.

Emma Lavelle (SR 30%) trained nine-year-old with two wins from 12 starts over fences and probably has been a bit unlucky not to get closer in three runs this season. Both wins came in 2023 from handicap marks of 113 and 120. Down 4 lbs to a mark of 113 again today. Not crying out for a three-mile trip but was outpaced over shorter last time when looking to come with a promising run at one stage. This is an interesting contest with no obvious leading contender/favourite. 33-1 each-way (four places) looks a value-filled proposition for useful Gold Link. I'd be surprised if he starts at such lengthy odds.

Fairly open chase with none of these having been very reliable at keeping their form in the past. Stony Man (SR 25%) is interesting on first run for Robbie Llewellyn who has taken to training with much success. Liam Harrison (SR 50%) rides. Dropped markedly back in trip from three miles to two miles. Runs off a mark of 100 so gets into this Class 5 (top weight). Has jumped pretty well in the past. A 14 length winner of a maiden hurdle over this trip in 2022 for former trainer Gary Hanmer. A little early market movement noted by the Racing Post.

Not too strong a race with just six runners to close proceedings at Chelmsford. Got No Dollars runs for Stuart Williams (SR 15%) and perhaps is the value play here at odds of 15-2. A career record of 6 wins from 40 AW starts. Low in the handicap off OR59. Scored over course and distance off this mark back in August with a late run. 7lbs claimer Olivia Haines has ridden a few winners and does show a profit on all runners. Trainer's horses are fit and running pretty well. Got No Dollars kept on to run fourth of 11 when last here in early December and is a pretty reliable sort. Fair claims of success, especially if getting a good pace to aim at.

Gustoso has seen a good deal of betting action and is the selection of 7 of 14 pro (newspaper) tipsters according to the Racing Post racecard for this race. Henry Daly (SR 25%) trained 6yo is raised 5lbs on the back of a comfortable win at Hereford when stepped up to beyond 3 miles for the first time last month. That was only a Class 4 contest but looks good form on the face of it (useful sorts Pipers Cross, Grove Road and Gris Majeur all beaten there). Sam Twiston-Davies rides again today and this six year-old by Passing Glance holds a clear advantage at the weights against more experienced rivals from a mark of 107 and bottom weight in this handicap hurdle. Can be played at 6-1.

This Class 5 chase over 2m4f isn't the most competitive looking of races. A few of interest in this nine-runner field including Warren Greatrex (SR 11%) trained top weight Just One Surf. James Bowen (SR 20%) is a decent jockey booking. Former Pointer who was a 40-1 maiden hurdle winner back in March. Aged six, he has had only seven starts under Rules. Pulled up on two recent chase outings but made a bad mistake at the sixth last fence which rather took the wind out of his sails at Taunton last time. Looked to be running a fair race and had been fancied a little in the market (started at 7-1). Still fairly unexposed and may have more to offer yet at this level.

Strange that Cherry Cobbler, closely related to 2yo winners over five and six furlongs, should have been started off over a trip of a mile 35 days ago here at Kempton. The Racing Post report of the race states 'soon prominent, going best over 2f out, kept on'. That bodes well for this drop in trip to six furlongs. The winner of that race has won again since. Sean Levey (SR 10%) rides for Stuart Williams (SR 16%). Could well be more to come from this Zoustar gelding following a very promising debut effort.
