Wilds & Hook Symbols

Sanatorium Secrets benefits from various special symbols. Below are the details:

• 1x4 Wild: Appearing on reels 2-5, it substitutes for all symbols bar the Scatter and Super Scatter. When it lands, it carries a random multiplier of 4x or 8x. The multiplier applies to all winning combinations it is part of. If multiple 1x4 Wilds are part of the same win, multiplier values are combined.
• 2x4 Wild: Appearing on reels 3 and 4, it substitutes for al symbols bar the Scatter and Super Scatter. When it appears, it carries a random multiplier of 8x, 16x, 32x or 64x. The multiplier value applies to all wins with multiple 2x4 Wilds seeing their values combined.
• Hook: Appearing on reels 1 and 6, it grabs all high-value symbols on the same row, transforming itself into the same matching high-value symbol or a cluster of them. It will then transform those high-value symbols into a 1x1 Wild. If the Hook passes over any wild symbol, it doubles that wild’s multiplier.

Puzzle

The Free Spins feature is triggered by landing 3 or more Scatter symbols anywhere during a base game spin. If you see 3 Scatters plus 1 Super Scatter, you’ll trigger the ‘Super’ version.

Before either begins, the Puzzle feature plays out. Beginning with 3 respins, an extra respin is awarded whenever a Puzzle piece lands. Look out for 1 or 2 Hook symbols landing as these will appear in random positions on each free spin when you enter the Free Spins feature. If you trigger the feature with a Super Scatter, you’re guaranteed 2 Hook symbols.

A multiplier of 1x can appear on reel 1 or 6 with each increasing the minimum multiplier of the 1x4 Wild symbols can hit with, during the free spins. The feature ends when no more respins are left or when puzzle pieces fully cover the reels (2, 3, 4 and 5). If puzzle pieces full over the reels, the max win is awarded with the feature ending.

Finally, high-value symbols can transform into Wild symbols when the reel associated with the symbol above is completed vertically with puzzle pieces.

Free Spins 

The free spins or super free spins begin with 6 free spins plus 2 extra free spins for each extra Scatter beyond the third. For each puzzle piece that hit during the Puzzle feature, an extra free spins is awarded.

Once in, new Wilds transformed in the Puzzle feature will appear on reels 2-5. If a Hook passes over a high-value symbol transformed into Wild, it transforms back to a 1x1 Wild and doubles it current multiplier.

When I first fired up the Sanatorium Secrets slot, my initial thought was that Pragmatic Play had stolen an artist/graphics person from Nolimit City. The atmosphere is spine-tingling with the graphics reminding me of Mental 2. Credit to Pragmatic though as its excellently designed.

As far as the gameplay is concerned, the base game comes with 1x4 Wild reels, 2x4 Wilds with multipliers up to 64x and Hooks that transform symbols into 1x1 Wilds with multipliers if the Hook passes over any wilds.

Then you have the free spins where you begin with the Puzzle feature: the aim is to land puzzle pieces and fill reels to transform high-value symbols into Wilds when you play the free spins. If you manage to fill all reels, you’ll pocket the game’s max win. Multipliers can also increase the minimum multiplier of 1x4 Wilds during the free spins.

With 10,000 x bet max wins, Sanatorium Secrets feels like it’s higher volatility than it’s medium rating suggests. I found the Hook symbol to be the key in building wilds and multipliers during the free spins.

In summary, Sanatorium Secrets is a terrifying slot game with unique mechanics and enough twists to please fans of horror-themed slots. It’s clear, to me at least, that this game is the first that introduces new mechanics and I’m excited to see how Pragmatic Play build on this with future releases.
