Slot Details

The Mega Moolah slot is played on 5 reels, 3 rows and 25 fixed paylines. Getting a winning combination requires you to land a certain number of matching symbols across any payline, from left to right and beginning from the leftmost reel. With the lower-value symbols, you need 3 or more and it’s 2 or more for the higher-value ones.

In terms of betting options, you can play this popular jackpot slot from 25p to £6.25 per spin. Use the Coins icon either below or to the side of the reels to see all 6 stake options. Non-UK players can take advantage of 2 gameplay functions: Autoplay (for up to 100 auto spins) and Quick Spin (for faster spin speed).

The Mega Moolah RTP rate is 93.42%. The progressive jackpots account for 5.3% of that total so the actual RTP is 88.12%. Whilst they may appear to be on the low site, it is a jackpot slot game and is within the standard RTP range.

On the volatility front, Mega Moolah is in the low category meaning plenty of frequent wins but small in value. On average, you’ll land a winning combination every 2.15 spins as the hit frequency rate is 46.36%.

Finally, this African safari can dish out 1,955 times bet maximum wins per free spin. The elephant in the room is that Mega Moolah is a progressive jackpot game with 4 jackpots up for grabs. Impressively, the Mega Jackpot starts at £2 million.

Mega Moolah slot base game screenshot

The Mega Moolah slot is the most famous of all progressive jackpot slots. Graphically though, it takes you on an African safari to the Serengeti. With cartoonish graphics, it’s filled with colour and excitement.

Released on the 30th of November 2006, it is showing its age graphically (despite being remastered a couple of times). That doesn’t deter from its charm though with many players preferring the stripped-back visuals. You’ll instantly hear the traditional Zulu-style soundtrack which ties in with the theme appropriately.

On the reels, there are A, K, Q, J and 10 royals as well as a collection of animals. They include an antelope, buffalo, zebra, elephant and giraffe. With the elephant paying the most (up to 30 times your total bet), you need 2 or more buffalo and elephant symbols for a win.

There is a Lion Wild symbol that substitutes for all the symbols above. Landing 2, 3, 4 or 5 wilds across a payline will result in a 0.6, 5, 60 or 600 x bet payout making it the most lucrative symbol. Furthermore, the Lion Wild will double your payout if it’s part of a win with standard symbols. The doubling wild also applies in other Microgaming titles including Immortal Romance.

Finally, Mega Moolah has a Witch Doctor Scatter symbol. With 3, 4, or 5 anywhere on the reels awarding a 3, 20 or 100 x bet payout, it’s key to triggering the Free Spins feature (more information available below). Here are the payouts of the symbols you’ll encounter during the game:

  • 10: 3, 4 or 5 = 0.08, 0.4 or 1.6 x bet
  • J: 3, 4 or 5 = 0.12, 0.6 or 2.4 x bet
  • Q: 3, 4 or 5 = 0.16, 0.8 or 3 x bet
  • K: 3, 4 or 5 = 0.24, 1.2 or 4 x bet
  • A: 3, 4 or 5 = 0.32, 1.6 or 6 x bet
  • Antelope: 3, 4 or 5 = 0.4, 2 or 10 x bet
  • Zebra: 3, 4 or 5 = 0.8, 4 or 16 x bet
  • Giraffe: 3, 4 or 5 = 1.2, 5 or 20 x bet
  • Buffalo: 2, 3, 4 or 5 = 0.16, 1.6, 6 or 24 x bet
  • Elephant: 2, 3, 4 or 5 = 0.24, 2, 10 or 30 x bet
  • Lion Wild: 2, 3, 4 or 5 = 0.6, 5, 60 or 600 x bet
  • Witch Doctor Scatter: 3, 4 or 5 = 3, 20 or 100 x bet

Mega Moolah Mobile

Released way back in November 2006, the Mega Moolah jackpot slot has been remastered using HTML5 technology. It’s available to play on PC and laptop devices as well as tablets and smartphones. The 5x3 configuration works well on smaller devices with nothing lost if you choose to play on the go.

Bonus Features

With only 2 bonus features as well as doubling wild wins, there are free spins with a trebling multiplier and 4 progressive jackpots which are randomly activated. Here are all the details:

Free Spins

The Free Spins feature is triggered by landing 3 or more Witch Doctor Scatters anywhere during a base game spin. With 15 free spins awarded, all winning combinations are subject to a 3x multiplier.

When the Lion Wild symbol is part of a win, the doubling effect applies to the 3x multiplier. This, in turn, delivers a 6x multiplier to wins. If you manage to land 3 or more Witch Doctor Scatters during a free spin, you’ll retrigger the feature with another 15 free spins awarded. That allows for a maximum of 30 free spins.

Progressive Jackpot Bonus Game

Mega Moolah slot progressive jackpots seed values

Mega Moolah is all about the Progressive Jackpot Bonus Game feature. Randomly activated on any spin, you’ll encounter a wheel divided into 20 segments with 4 different colours. Each segment represents a different progressive jackpot.

You then spin the wheel to win 1 of the progressive jackpots. Below is a table highlighting how many segments, what colour they are and what the minimum jackpot value is (i.e. seed value).

Mega Jackpot Winners & Network

The seed value highlighted above is the minimum value of the progressive jackpots. With the Mega Jackpot averaging a payment of over €6.69 million every 49 days, it’s the most popular progressive jackpot online.

Due to the popularity of the Mega Moolah slot game, Microgaming/Games Global have created a Mega Moolah Jackpot Network which encompasses a growing portfolio of more than 15 jackpot slots. These include the likes of Immortal Romance: Mega Moolah, Thunderstruck 2: Mega Moolah and Mega Moolah Megaways.

In terms of winners, here is a list of the biggest Mega Moolah Mega Jackpot winners:

  • €19,430,723.60 on Absolootly Mad: Mega Moolah (April 2021)
  • €18,915,872.81 on Mega Moolah (September 2018)
  • €17,879,645.12/£13,213,838.68 on Mega Moolah (October 2015)

In the UK, the biggest-ever win recorded was £13,213,838.68 (£13.2 million) by soldier Jonathan Hayward in October 2015 at Betway Casino. With nearly €600 million won in total (at the time of writing), below you can find OLBG's dedicated guide to all Mega Moolah network slots:

Expert Verdict

Mega Moolah slot OLBG rating banner

The Mega Moolah slot is the undisputed king of progressive jackpot slots. Making millionaires and breaking world records since 2006, this legendary game may look a little dated visually but it retains its charm and appeal to this very day.

In terms of the gameplay, it’s relatively simple with doubling wild wins and free spins with a 3x multiplier (or 6x multiplier with the wild). The potential 6x multiplier can lead to 1,955 times your total bet max wins per free spin. It’s a low-variance game with a high hit frequency rate which helps too.

With the random-triggered Progressive Jackpot Bonus Game feature being the highlight, you’re guaranteed to win 1 of 4 progressive jackpots when you enter. The Mega Jackpot starts at £2 million but averages over €6.69 million every 49 days.

Additionally, Mega Moolah has inspired Microgaming/Games Global to deliver a Mega Moolah jackpot network. Popular Microgaming slots like Immortal Romance and Thunderstruck 2 have been given the Mega Moolah treatment as a result.

Creating more millionaires than any other jackpot game, the Absolootly Mad: Mega Moolah slot delivered the biggest-ever Mega Moolah jackpot of €19,430,723.60 in April 2021.

In summary, the Mega Moolah online slot is a must for players chasing 7 or even 8-figure jackpots. There is no Mega Moolah free play version unfortunately with the real money version available to play at casino sites only.
