The Frank’s Diner slot is an unusually designed game. Inspired by American diners, it is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland so the setting is rather grim and chaotic.

You’ll also notice that it uses 8-bit graphics to represent the characters in the background as well as the symbols on the reels – it’s all very odd (but intriguing!). It is not the first time Relax has used 8-bit graphics (think Hellcatraz and Banana Town). If you like the look, NetEnt’s Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior slot would be my choice.

With Frank quite animated as he stands proud above his diner, symbols on the reels include various menu items including eggs, sausages, steaks, hamburgers and manga meat (as seen in old-school cartoons). Avalanche

When you land a winning combination, the Avalanche feature will be activated. Winning symbols are blasted off the reels with the remaining symbols dropping into the empty symbol positions. New symbols then drop in from above. If you land another winning combination, the process repeats itself and continues until no more wins are formed.

Win Boost

Randomly during the base game, the Win Boost feature may trigger. With 1 Win Boost per spin, a Symbol, Wild or Gold Boost will occur:

• Symbol Boost: guarantees a win. In the next generation, set positions on the reels will be filled with the same symbol.
• Wild Boost: guarantees a win with added multipliers. In the next generate, all free positions from reels 2-5 will be filled with wilds, and free positions on reels 1 and 6 will be filled with the same symbol.
• Gold Wild Boost: you get a re-spin. In the next generation, all free positions from reels 2-5 will be filled with wilds and free positions on reels 1 and 6 will be filled with the same symbol.

Split Symbols

The Split Symbols feature is triggered when 2 to 3 identical symbols appearing on the same reel. The matching symbols consolidate into double or triple stacked symbols, which then doubles or triples your chances of forming a winning combination: it doesn’t affect the number of ways to win. Randomly all consolidated symbols can be replaced with the highest-value consolidated symbol.

Wilds

Frank’s Diner comes with 2 wild symbols. Landing on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, there are standard Wilds and Gold Wilds. The standard wild substitutes for all paying symbols.

However, a win involving a Gold Wild triggers a re-spin. More re-spins follow as long as a new matching symbol are part of the win.

Importantly, standard and Gold Wilds trigger a reel multiplier: reel 2, 3, 4 or 5 will have a 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x multiplier, respectively. If wilds appear on several reels, the reel multiplier values are combined.

Last Stand Free Spins 

The Last Stand Free Spins feature is triggered by landing 3 Bonus symbols anywhere during a base game spin: you begin with 10 free spins.

Every Wild Re-Spin that occurs will increase reel multipliers by 1, which are persistent and can only increase. You can also win an extra 10 free spins (by landing 3 Bonus symbols).

Finally, you can buy your way into the free spins for 60 x your total bet. Not available in the UK, the RTP rate also increases to 96.5%.

Frank’s Diner is a uniquely-themed slot with plenty of bonus features that combine to offer up to 10,000 x bet max wins. Entertaining yes but not entirely original.

Using 8-bit graphics like in many Relax Gaming titles, the Frank’s Diner slot is a mashup between post-apocalyptic, retro and food themes. For some strange reason, it works.

With avalanches that can lead to successive wins, the random Win Boost guarantees a winning combination, gives a win with added multipliers and awards re-spins. In the next generation of each outcome, reels are filled with the same symbol and wilds for even bigger win potential. With 2 wild symbols, a win with a Gold Wild awards a re-spin and triggers reel multipliers. Multiple wilds will lead to reel multipliers combining. All pretty standard stuff.

The Split Splits sees 2 to 3 identical symbols appearing on the same reel: it is a little like the Nitro Reels in ELK Studios’ Nitropolis series but the consolidation of symbols doesn’t affect the number of ways to win. Finally, the Last Stand Free Spins feature sees reel multipliers increase and persist with every wild re-spin.

With 10,000 x bet max wins, the Frank’s Diner slot combines elements of many other slot games into a unique package. It may not be the most innovative game I’ve played but it’s a worthy addition to Relax Gaming’s ever-growing portfolio.
