Lydia West in at 5/1 to be the next Doctor Who

There's a new addition to the next Doctor Who betting market with actress Lydia West joining the list of potential people to replace Jodie Whittaker in the role.

Russell T Davies has recently announced that he will be returning to Doctor Who as showrunner, in a move that will excite Who fans across the globe.

Davies was key in the revival of Doctor Who and he is seen by many as being a big part of some of the best years of the Doctor's recent TV seasons.

The addition therefore of Lydia West in the market to be next Doctor Who with betting sites is due to her working with Davies in the past.

Also new in the market is T'Nia Miller, who is another actress who has worked on Years and Years with Davies so there is some consistency in what bookies suggest could happen next.

Lydia West has worked with Russell T Davies previously on Years and Years and It's A Sin so this may have contributed to bookies adding her at 5/1 to be the next Doctor Who

Michael Sheen now into joint favourite for the role alongside Olly Alexander

Michael Sheen is one of the biggest actors to come out of Britain in the last 30 years, featuring in mega roles across Hollywood yet also starring in roles on British television.

It's no surprise therefore that such an actor could be linked with one of the most sought after roles in British TV in Doctor Who.

Sheen wasn't featured in the market as such over the last few months, but has recently been backed into joint favourite meaning that bookies give him a big chance of taking over Jodie Whittaker's role.

Olly Alexander however has been predominant in the market ever since the start of the year when it opened and it's no surprise that he still finds himself at the top.

Alexander has worked with Russell T Davies on It's A Sin and Davies' series Years and Years may have been called that due to Alexander's band of the same name.

At odds of 6/4, there's an implied probability that there's a 40% chance that Alexander or Sheen take over the role.

Olly Alexander's band Years & Years have songs that are constantly played on TV, be it adverts or on shows themselves including this one:

Russell Brand 80/1 outsider for the role

When it comes to these markets, be it next Doctor Who or next James Bond, there are always the odd candidate thrown in by bookies at larger prices that make you do a second take and have giggle.

In this market, Russell Brand is that figure.

You could however see Brand in the Doctor Who role as his quirkiness definitely has that Doctor feel about him and you wouldn't be surprised to see him relish in the role.

Russell T Davies has had figures in the Doctor role that have shown this, with David Tennant really making the Doctor what they are today.

Other outsiders in the market include James Corden at 50/1 and Olivia Coleman at 66/1, both you feel would give completely different takes on such an important role in British Broadcasting history.

Russell Brand is an 80/1 outsider to be the next Doctor Who, with bookies expecting a slim chance that he's chosen as the next Time Lord.
