Poya Asbaghi the 1/6 favourite with bookmakers to take over at Barnsley
Poya Asbaghi is the 1/6 favourite to take over at Barnsley according to betting sites, with the 36 year old manager currently in charge of Sweden's U21 side.
Next Barnsley Manager | Odds | Implied Probability |
---|---|---|
Poya Asbaghi | 1/6 | 85.7% |
Michael Flynn | 7/1 | 12.5% |
Wouter Vrancken | 14/1 | 6.7% |
Hannes Wolf | 16/1 | 5.9% |
Michael Flynn was the former bookmakers favourite for the role, with talks reportedly ongoing last week, but it looks like Asbaghi will take over in the job according to bookies.
Asbaghi never played football at a professional level, but has been in various different managerial roles since 2014.
Arguably his most high profile moment in his managerial career was when he won the Swedish Cup as manager of IFK Goteborg in 2020, with an extra time win over Malmo.
Reports back then suggested that he turned down Barnsley at that point, but it looks like he may make the switch now.
Neil Warnock 33/1 to make quick return to management
Neil Warnock was recently dismissed as manager of Middlesbrough after a poor run of results, but features in the market to become next Barnsley manager.
Warnock played for Barnsley back in the 70's, but has never managed the Yorkshire club.
Warnock has though managed several clubs in the Yorkshire area and Barnsley would be another one ticked off the list.
Mick McCarthy is a similar manager of Warnock's style that has been put in the betting market at 25/1.
Bookies suggest though that it'll be a foreign manager who comes in and takes over at Barnsley.
Barnsley sacked Markus Schopp after 7 straight league defeats
The Tykes dismissed manager Markus Schopp after a horrendous run of games saw them loses 7 straight in the league.
For a club of Barnsley's recent form of the the last few years, contending for a play-off place in the Championship, this wasn't good enough.
Barnsley clearly have a plan in which they want to compete to get into the Premier League and they'll be hoping whoever they bring in next helps get them there.
Michael Flynn was successful as Newport manager and this was part of the reason why he was heavily linked at Barnsley, but it looks like they'll go back for Poya Asbaghi who has previously rejected them.
