  • Fikayo Tomori is in form at AC Milan this season and is 20/1 to start in the opener at the 2022 World Cup
  • 28/1 Acca odds for the same back 5 to start as the Euro 2020 Final
  • Centre Back's James Tarkowski and Craig Dawson 100/1 outsiders to start at the 2022 World Cup

Fikayo Tomori 20/1 to start in the first game at the Qatar World Cup next Winter

AC Milan centre back Fikayo Tomori, 23, is low down in the odds to start in the opener at the 2022 Qatar World Cup next year.

At 20/1 with betting sites, there are several centre backs who feature ahead of him in the market including the two normal starters in Harry Maguire and John Stones.

Tomori was at Chelsea before joining Milan, with the young defender joining the club as an 8 year old back in 2005.

He joined several clubs on loan during his Chelsea career, including AC Milan in the 20/21 season, before making the permanent move to Italy after the club exercised a £25 million buy option from the loan deal.

With such long odds of 20/1, bookmakers are giving just a 4.8% chance of Tomori starting for England at the 2022 World Cup, but a mixture of good form and injuries to other players could see him climb up the betting odds.

Fikayo Tomori is a 20/1 outsider to start at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, but his recent call-up to the England squad shows he's in Gareth Southgate's plans.

28/1 odds that the same five defenders start at the 2022 World Cup

The Euro 2020 Final is still a sore subject amongst England fans just a few months on from their penalty shootout defeat to Italy, but it's worth looking who started that game to get a sense of what odds are valuable in this market.

England started that game with 5 at the back and those 5 players could well start in the opener at the 2022 World Cup.

Harry Maguire is the favourite in the market at 2/5, with centre back partner John Stones at odds of 4/9. Full backs Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker are 4/5 and 6/4 respectively, with wing-back Kieran Trippier out to 9/4.

All five players in an accumulator would be out to odds of 28/1 with bookmakers, meaning that they give just a 3.4% chance that England start the World Cup next year with the same five and the back as they did in the Euro 2020 Final.

Defender to start in the 2022 World Cup opening game Odds Probability
Harry Maguire 2/5 71.4%
John Stones 4/9 69.2%
Luke Shaw 4/5 55.6%
Kyle Walker 6/4 40%
Kieran Trippier 9/4 30.8%

Big odds outsiders for the World Cup next year

There are some big odds outsiders to start for England in defence at the World Cup next year and someone always tends to be a surprise package as we get closer to the tournament.

A mixture of defensive errors and injuries could make Gareth Southgate start to consider other players when it comes to his England squad.

The big outsiders in the market to start in the first game at the 2022 World Cup include Aaron Cresswell, James Tarkowski and Craig Dawson, all at odds of 100/1.

Liverpool full back Trent Alexander-Arnold is odds of 10/3 to start at the World Cup and he was set to feature at the Euros earlier this year but was injured in one of the pre-tournament friendlies just a couple of weeks before the tournament started.

Tyrone Mings featured at centre back at the Euros this Summer and he also started in the first game which could prove that Gareth Southgate trusts the player in his squad. He's odds of 15/2 to start the first game of the 2022 World Cup.

Tyrone Mings is 15/2 to replicate his Euro 2020 campaign by starting in the opening game of the 2022 World Cup for England.
