What is Asian Handicap Betting?

With the plethora of different types of bets you can make on a football match, Asian Handicap betting is very popular. Particularly in Asia from whence the name is derived. But what is Asian handicap betting on football and how does it work? Below are some Asian handicap charts

Asian Handicap betting provided by the best betting sites is a form of betting on Association Football whereby odds are set based on one team being given a 'head start' with the allocation of goals or half goals before the game commences. Even Quarter goals can be included. Asian handicaps eliminate the draw option leaving only two possible outcomes on which odds are provided and bets can be made.

Asian Handicap is an Advanced Bet Type

To avoid disappointment, please ensure you understand all potential possible outcomes of Asian handicap lines you are betting on. If you struggle to be certain on basic bet types, Asian handicap betting may not be for you just yet.

The use of half and quarter goals can be confusing, and whilst explanations will help to understand, the best way to learn, check and understand Asian handicaps, is to see a visual table of the scenarios and possible outcomes.

How Does The Asian Handicap Work

As you can tell from browsing the tables above, Asian Handicaps are not straightforward at first glance, with half and quarter figures offered. Whilst the tables provide a visual of possible results and bet outcomes, let's look a little closer.

Asian Handicap Full Lines

People often think that Asian handicap betting comes into its own when there are relative mismatches in football matches where one side has a far higher probability, and therefore much lower odds on offer to win the game, and conversely, higher and larger ods for the underdog.

This is not always the case and by using the Asian handicap lines you may be able to find more value in the odds if you think the handicap set is misplaced.

Asian handicap Full Line are those with round numbers. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc

You will see these lines represented with a '-' [minus] for the favoured team, or a '+' [plus] for the underdog.

This signifies that the underdog is provided a 1 goal head start in the match.

  • Manchester City -1.00
  • Bournemouth +1.00

You may think that a goal start would not be enough for Bournemouth to win this game as you feel Manchester City may win by 2 or more goals. here is what would happen, depending on whether you bet on Manchester City or Bournemouth on this market

Manchester City -1.00Win by 2 or moreWin
Win by 1Push
Draw or LoseLose
Bournemouth +1.00Win or DrawWin
Lose by 1Push
Lose by 2 or MoreLose

As you can see the possibility of a draw has been removed from this bet. Should you bet on Manchester City to overcome a goal start and they win only by 1 goal, [1-0, 2-1, 3-2 etc], the scores would be level after the handicap is applied, and a 'PUSH' is the bet outcome.

The 'push' voids the bet and the full stake is returned to you. The bet is neither a win or a lose.

Let's take another example, this time, from +/-2 option

Liverpool -2.00 / Norwich +2.00

Liverpool -2.00Win by 3 or MoreWin
Win by 2Push
Win by 1 Lose or DrawLose
Norwich +2.00Win, Draw or Lose by 1Win
Lose by 2Push
Lose by 3 or moreLose

With this plus or minus 2 Asian handicap line, Liverpool would have to win by 3 clear goals, for you to land a bet on Liverpool -2.00.

If you think the game would be closer than this, a bet on Norwich at +2.00 means that you would win the bet, if either of three outcomes were to happen in the gam

  1. Norwich Win
  2. Drawn Game
  3. Lose by 1 Goal

Each of those three options is possible results for a Norwich +2.00 bet to be a winner for you

Asian Handicap Half Lines

This outcome, along with quarter lines can be confusing so let's jump in and try to explain. If you remain in any doubt, skip to the tables for a visual.

Quite different from full lines, Asian Handicap Half lines, introduce half goal outcomes. If a team is available with +0.50, they have a half goal lead from the start. This means that if the game ends in a draw, your bet is a winner. Effectively this is almost the same in all but name to a double chance Win/Draw selection on the team. Conversely, the team with the -0.50 Asian line has to win for the bet to be a winner.

Asian Handicap Quarter Lines

Another different option for Asian handicap betting is Quarter lines. These end in .25 or .75. As with other Asian handicap lines, you will be getting a 0.25 goal start or deficit depending on the match odds and selection. Here enters the possibility of Half stake wins or Losses depending on the outcome.

This becomes a little more confusing depending on the one quarter or three-quarter lines. With this particular line, it is by far the best option to take a look at the Asian handicap tables in this article by clicking here. trying to explain the differing outcome in words is not going to help you.

What does +0 or -0 mean in Asian Handicap?

+0.00 or -0.00 in Asian handicap is the same as 'Draw No Bet' which you may have seen before. +/0.00 in Asian handicap betting means that you will get lesser odds on either team to win a match but if your selected side does not win and the game ends in a draw, you get your stake back as a push.

A common misconception with Asian handicap betting is at first glance at +0 or -0 Asian handicap betting lines. Often, someone new to Asian handicap betting may think that, because there is not a goal advantage or disadvantage to either side that this +0 line would be the same as a normal 1x2 full time result bet. The betting odds available highlight how they differ perfectly.

Selection
Asian Handicap Odds +/-01x2 Odds
Team A (-0.00)1.652.37
Team B (+0.00)2.203.20
DrawN/A3.30

As you can see from the table above, Team A are the favourites for the game and start with -0.00 while Team B are the underdogs and get the +0.00

Still, this may not make sense until you consider that the Asian handicap odds do not offer a draw outcome. (In fact, no Asian handicap will offer a draw option).

So let's bring some visuals (And team names [sorry Arsenal fans]) into this and show what the result of bets would be given different match outcomes.

Chelsea -0.00WinWin

Arsenal +0.00WinWin

What is a +1.5 Asian Handicap?

+1.5 in Asian handicap betting uses a half goal line, meaning that the team with the +1.50 allocation gets a 'one and a half goal start' to the game. If you bet a +1.50 team, your bet would be a winner if the bet ended in either A win or draw for your team, or even if they lost by no more than 1 goal in the game. Conversely, if you bet the -1.50 team, they would have to win the game by 2 or more goals for your bet to be successful.

Let's provide a visual possibility table to help you understand the potential outcomes based on the match result.

Everton -1.50Win by 2 or moreWin
Win by 1Lose
Draw or LoseLose
Manchester United +1.50Win or DrawWin
Lose by 1Win
Lose by 2 or moreLose

What is the Difference Between Handicap and Asian Handicap

The difference between Asian handicaps and normal handicaps is that in Asian betting there are only two possible outcomes for a bet using half and quarter goals, whereas in European handicap betting the lines are set with whole goals offering still three options.

What is Asian Goal Line? (Tables)

Asian Goal Line is applying Asian handicap rules to normal over/under total goals betting. The expectation of at least one goal being scored is a minimum criterion for making this bet, and the line chosen on your prediction for the minimum or a maximum number of goals to be scored in the game. You can still choose to bet either 'under' or 'over' with a line attached.

Whilst in Match result Asian betting there are 3 possible outcomes and the draw is removed with pushes, the beauty of Asian Goal line betting is that while there are still only 2 outcomes in this bet, the stake refund or loss of only half stake, remains a possibility

In addition to the Match Result, Asian handicaps can also be applied to total goals, Over and Under betting too.

Asian Handicap FAQ

  • How do you bet on Asian Handicap?

You need to first find a bookmaker offering asian handicap betting, then once you know the event and handicap you want to play, select it so it appear in your betslip, Choose a stake and confirm the bet. From there on in, it's sit and hope. Betting on asian handicap need not be any more difficult than betting on full time results or normal handicap markets.

  • What is the difference between handicap and Asian Handicap?

The difference between asian handicap and the normal handicap is that the Asian handicap takes the draw outcome out of the bet providing a push if it were to happen. This is why you will most often find asian handicaps quoted with 'half' goals, to eliminate the draw possibility.

  • Why Do Bettors Like Asian Handicaps So Much?

Because with only two options, the bookmaker's profit margin is much reduced, thus offering better value for your wager.

  • What is +1.5 Asian Handicap?

If you bet on a team with a +1.5 Asian handicap, then you can only lose your bet if they were to lose the game by 2 goals or more. Effectively, the team with +1.5 has been given a one and a half goal start at the beginning of the game.

  • What Does 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 mean in Asian Handicapping?

These A/H bets divide your stake into two bets. One bet goes to the nearest whole number and one to the closest half number.

E.g. You back Manchester United at (-0.75). One bet goes at -1.0, and one goes at -0.5, so if United wins 1-0, You win half of your stake, multiplied by your odds, and half is a push.

  • What Is A Push In Asian Handicap Betting?

This is when you neither win nor lose the Asian Handicap bet, and your stake is returned.

E.g. You back Manchester United at (-1) on the Asian Handicap, and they win 1-0, meaning the result is a draw.

  • Can I Place An Asian Handicap Bet In the OLBG Tipping Competition?

Yes, Asian Handicap markets are available; it can be a good starting point to get to grips with the A/H format. You can alsobuild an accumulator using A/H

  • Why is it called Asian Handicap?

The reason Asian Handicap has its name is because asked for a translation of the term 'hang Cheng betting', which is the name by which it is widely known in Asia by  Indonesian bookmaker  Joe Phan, Journalist Joseph Saumarez Smith provided Asian handicap as the answer.
