A Guide to the Sunland Park Racetrack
The Sunland Park racetrack is located close to the Rio Grande, just outside of El Paso, New Mexico.
Opened in 1959, the track is regarded as the premier racetrack in southwest America with the track also featuring a casino.
Racing at the track usually takes place between December to May with racing traditionally four days a week.

The highlight of the season at Sunland Park is the Sunland Derby. Run over one mile and one furlong, it's run in March and is open to three-year-old runners.
The race has a Grade 3 status and is an official prep race for the Kentucky Derby.
In 2009, Mine That Bird, homed at Sunland Park pulled off one of the biggest shocks when winning the Kentucky Derby at 50/1!
The Sunland Park Oaks is an official prep race for the Kentucky Oaks. The race is run over one mile and a half a furlong and is open to three-year-old fillies and mares.
Other notable races are the Harry W. Henson Handicap, Riley Allison Derby and the Sunland Park Handicap.
The Mine That Bird Derby, named after the Kentucky Derby winner is a prep race for the Sunland Derby.
