The Sam Houston race park was opened in 1994. It is located about fifteen minutes from downtown Houston, Texas and the site was originally a greyhound racetrack.

The racetrack hosts two types of racing, from January through to March they have thoroughbred racing.

Then from March through to May, they host American quarter horse races. So wagering is available at Sam Houston on live racing for six months of the year.

The race park like many US courses has an inner turf course which is a seven-furlong circuit.

Also, there is an outer dirt track which is a mile circuit and complete with chutes for the American quarter horse racing.

The race is open to those aged four years old or older and takes place during the Houston Racing Festival in March.
