Ludlow Racecourse Guide

Ludlow is situated in Shropshire, the racecourse is about 2 miles from Ludlow town centre and just off the A49, Hereford to Shrewsbury road. A small but friendly provincial course, it holds National Hunt meetings from mid-October to the middle of May.

Highlights: The feature race is the Forbra Gold Cup run over 3 miles at the beginning of March; it can be a bit close to Cheltenham, although some horses do run in both and/or Aintree in April. Since 2012, trainers Evan Williams and Venetia Williams have won the race twice.

Another notable chase is the Prince of Wales in January; the other races on the Ludlow cards are competitive novice races and handicaps.

Type of Racing: National Hunt Only.

TV Channel: Racing TV

Bookmakers' Streaming Services: Paddy Power, Bet 365, William Hill.

Ludlow Racecourse Map

Right Handed: The chase course is two fairly long straights with sharp bends into and out of each. Relatively flat, there is a rise up to the end of the back straight, from which point it is a gradual descent to the finish.

The hurdle course shares the home straight, but the slightly undulating back straight is outside the chase track. It is about 150 yards longer than the chase course, which is about 12f but this does not make the bends any easier. The fences are far from difficult, and good jumpers may see them as no more inconvenient than a hurdle. Both courses have a near 2 furlong run-in.

Ludlow Tips From The Racecourse

Ludlow, being right-handed, looks for horses that have run at similar right-handed tracks, especially those of a similar grade, such as Carlisle or Leicester or dropping down a grade from tracks such as Sandown or Newbury.

The big trainers may have overfaced their horses at Sandown or Newbury and will find an easier level of a race at Ludlow.

Ludlow has an excellent record for favourites winning, which we expect is down to the class of trainer who sends horses a long way; the bookies know trainers who are travelling to Shropshire are looking for a win.

Ludlow Jockey and Trainer Statistics

Who are the best National Hunt jockeys and trainers to bet on at Ludlow?

Backing all of the Fergal O'Brien runners would have produced backing the most winners for a trainer here at Ludlow, with thirty-three, but you would have returned a loss by doing so. Alastair Ralph leads the way for profitable trainers with an LSP of +54.71 from their twenty winners. If you are more of an eachway player, then you may want to know which trainer is best to follow at Ludlow, and that would be Alastair Ralph, who shows the best eachway LSP, which is +19.09, thanks to their forty-two placings (twenty winners). Miss Sarah-Jayne Davies does not have a great record at Ludlow; their LSP of -61.00 has them stone dead bottom of the trainers' list, which has come from zero winners from sixty-one runners, which is a 0% strike rate.

When looking at profitable jockeys only, then it is Jonathan Burke who leads the way with a total of twenty-five winners, producing an LSP of +40.68, whilst Sam Twiston-Davies leads the overall list with twenty-eight winners but shows a loss overall.
