Chepstow Racecourse Guide

Just inside the Welsh border, Chepstow is a busy track with around 32 race days a year covering flat and national hunt racing. It’s the most important race track in Wales, holding four Graded National Hunt races.

Highlights: Welsh National and also the Welsh National Trial earlier in the month, the Finale Juvenile Hurdle, Persian War Novice Hurdle, and Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle. The quality of races is better over jumps than on the flat, with predominantly handicaps on the flat.

The big meeting of the year is normally the day after Boxing Day, with the Welsh National and Finale Hurdle taking place that day. The National meeting can suffer from inclement weather and has been cancelled 3 times in recent years.

Left-handed, an oval configuration with the course undulating, making NH races stop-start, it's neither galloping nor speedy, horses over jumps need to get the distance, especially when the going is heavy, as it often is. A 5-furlong home straight takes some getting when horses are becoming tired.

Tips From Chepstow Racecourse

It is key to know that the flat course has a long 1 mile straight, running in a straight line for a mile can take a lot out of a horse, and it seems a long way home.

Bends slow horses down. With no bends, you can get inexperienced jockeys going off too fast and not getting home. Running in a straight line when the going is heavy is even more taxing for the horse.

Look to the top flat jockeys at Chepstow up to a mile as we feel the course needs to be ridden well and pace handled perfectly, which the better, more experienced jockeys are ably equipped.

When looking at the going description for the Welsh National over the last 10 years, it either featured the word heavy or soft in the description, in some cases both! So look for a mudlark at Chepstow, just below top class, who is well weighted to win National Hunt races.

We would say that you should always check the going description at Chepstow, as this has more relevance to finding winners than at many other race tracks.  Trainers expect heavy and target those from their stables who do not mind 'Somme' like conditions.

The Chepstow fences are not the hardest in comparison to other courses, but they do find out tiring horses; they still need to be jumped!

Chepstow Draw Bias

✅ If you want the most profitable stall at Chepstow, then you need to look at races over 7f and focus on stall 4, as this has produced an LSP of +48.04 over the last five years.

❌ For the least profitable stall at Chepstow, you need to look at races over 6f and focus on stall 3 as this has produced an LSP of -64.25 over the last five years.

Here we have the draw bias for Chepstow taken into consideration in races with ten or more runners. We will break down the figures by race trips. Draws can be much more important in shorter trips, where runners do not have time to find their position during the race, meaning the draw is probably more important than in races over longer distances.

  • Sprints (5f to 7½f)
  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)

The following table shows a breakdown of a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example, in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12). The positions will always be the lowest stall number to the highest.
