Mephisto had won twice on the flat but had generally struggled over obstacles, only being placed twice in 18 starts. He did, however, take advantage of a falling mark and a race reduced to effectively a flat race by low sun at Wexford last week, winning by 2.5 lengths. He proved that was no fluke when winning by 5.5 lengths off 7lbs higher at Ballinrobe on Monday. Despite another 7lbs penalty, in his current form, he must have a great chance of bringing up the hat trick.
