Hourman from the Queen of Hexham stable of Lucinda Russell with Michael Scudamore, having Derek Fox in the saddle, indicates first string. Hourman has a solid pedigree hinting at some substance, as he is by Masked Marvel, who has a line of pedigree to Waldpark. That speaks volumes with middle-distance wins. Add this to Masked Marvel being a St Leger winner, and there is plenty to see why connections are stepping up in distance with Hourman. That can see him giving a very good chance.

This being a novice chase, I can see mistakes appearing, but this mare may have settled down. Her two runs here have seen her going off like a scolded cat with Alan Doyle. Derek Fox has come in for the ride, and the mare has been given a break, which could see her fresh and well and of significant interest with good ground to cover. I cannot see Derek Fox holding her up but rather holding a prominent position, and hopefully she meets each fence perfectly to still be there at the finish.

Stuart Edmunds has a habit of getting his charges handicapped to run well, and racing off 120 is well within his grasp. He unseated his rider, Charlie Hammond, at Haydock when making a good move to be involved at the finish; this occurred two out. With clean hurdling today, Charlie Hammond can be making a serious challenge with twelve stone on his back.

Hexham Marathon Handicap Chase over four miles is a real test of stamina that will challenge all runners. This includes Wal Bucks, who is only seven years old. He is capable of holding a position and, when in a good rhythm, can fence well. With the stamina he has, jockey Derek Fox can exploit that.

Patrick Wadge has the ride for Lucinda Russell, who was champion trainer at Hexham in the past before Michael Scudamore joined the training roll here. Another High Five ran well in defeat at Kelso behind Judicial Deference when second. If showing the same tenacity with a pound more, he can go close to taking this race.

I cannot remember Danny McMenamin riding for Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore before. He possibly has, but the brain is not firing. Anyhow, Danny must have been recommended by Brian Hughes, who was in the plate when last seen. Brian would more than likely be in the plate if he did not have a broken leg. This mare was fourth in a National Hunt Flat Race at Ayr on debut. The winner, The Sketcher, is highly thought of to run in the Champion Bumper this season at Cheltenham. Stablemate Allfor, who was sixth, ran again and was second on his next outing. The form of the Ayr race does give substance to this mare, who is by Valirann. Valirann was high class on the flat and his sire was Nayef, so there is plenty of stamina in the pedigree for interest in this race. Can see Danny McMenamin getting a very good run out of the mare.
