South Korean K League Format and Past Winners
The K League 1 is the top professional league in South Korean football where twelve teams compete to be crowned champions.
The league is similar to the Scottish leagues where each team plays the other eleven teams a total of three times making up thirty-three matches.
The league is then split into two groups, a 'Championship' group consisting of the top six teams and a 'Relegation' group consisting of the bottom six teams.
Each team plays a total of six games in the group stages at the end of which, the top team are crowned champions.
The top two teams head into next season's AFC Champions League with the 3rd placed team heading into the qualifiers.
The team that finishes bottom of the 'Relegation' group is relegated to the next tier (K League 2).
The team finishing second from the bottom will go into a one-match playoff against a team from the lower division in an attempt to retain their place in the league.
