They Want Me

This looks a match between the top two in the market. THEY WANT ME (2/1) carries a penalty for winning his second hurdle race at Kelso at the end of December, but it is his debut run a month earlier which is the more eye-catching as he finished 11 lengths second behind Idaho Sun in a higher class race, that rival went on to win a Grade 1 hurdle race easily at Aintree on Boxing Day. He was well beaten last time out when returning to Kelso but the heavy ground was probably to blame. He has his conditions again today and trainer Donald McCain has a great record here.

The only newcomer in the field but he's from the in-form Skelton yard who have a 40% each-way strike rate in the last 3 months. Well-worth a small bet then at 40/1 with in-form jockey Tristan Durell who has a good record around Warwick.

Another competitive novice hurdle with several in with a chance. KING AL , 3/1 second favourite, still looks good value for a win only bet. Rated 6lb higher than the favourite and carrying 10lb less under today's conditions. Alan King's stable are in good form, as is Tom Bellamy who has rode him on all three previous hurdle runs.

A small field novice hurdle and a small each-way bet on PARNELL STREET (12/1) is the percentage call. After winning a maiden hurdle at Clonmel in December, he's come close in all three hurdle races since against some very good rivals.

This looks quite competitive and there is little between those at the top of the market. AMPLE WARNING (50/1) though is very unexposed and showed an aptitude for hurdling on her debut in December finishing 4th of 15, she may have done better if not for a mistake two out. The three in front of her that day are very good horses and the average OR of the field was 125. Jonathon Burke has a good record at Warwick and partners her again today.

DOCTOR ELVIS was returning from a massive lay-off when well-beaten here in January. He showed his fitness was back over hurdles last time out however, finishing a close 4th of 16 at Punchestown. Jack Kennedy takes the reins today and with only two serious rivals (Heallys Pub and Colcannon), he's has a great chance

BUNNY BEE has only raced three times so is very unexposed. Henrietta Knight must think something of her entering her in a Listed bumper race for her first run under Rules. She flopped that day finishing last. A month later she made her hurdle debut at Fontwell, sent off at 50/1, she showed massive improvement to finish 2nd of 13. The winner won comfortably but she had two decent types behind her in 3rd and 4th and thats pretty useful form in my opinion. Last time out she was pulled-up at Wincanton but the ground was heavy so we can forgive that effort. The market leaders don't look anything special having inconsistent form and/or weak form lines. Jockey Paul O'Brien rejoins her after that great hurdle debut and a repeat of that performance will give her a sporting chance at fantastic odds! PASSAGE DU MAURE (20/1) is also worth an each-way bet.

Juvenile hurdle races can be very unpredictable, as young horses can develop and improve at different rates. Two horses that ran to a similar level a month ago and are priced closely today can perform very differently. None of these horses today have raced more than twice over hurdles, so putting big bets on the market leaders is poor value. PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA (40/1) ran well on debut, finishing a close-up 3rd of 5 at Leicester in November ??" beaten just under 5 lengths by one of her rivals today, Lucy The Wire. She is 7 lb better off with that rival today. On her second hurdle race in December, she was leading the field and jumping well until stumbling at the sixth hurdle. Although she maintained her position, she weakened shortly after and finished 6th of 11 (beaten 25 lengths). That's a fair excuse, and she will have learned from that. Highest rated on Geegeex Speed Ratings. Jockey Stan Sheppard rejoins her again, which is another positive.

Mullins and Elliot train the market leaders and they have reasonable hurdle form, but the value bet is KAISER DE CHANAY (16/1) in my opinion. He finished a close-up 5th of 12 (beaten 9 lengths) in his race at Navan in January on only his second start over hurdles, where the average OR of his rivals was higher than those in the races the market leaders have contested. The form of that race has worked out very well with 2 winners and a placed effort since. The heavy ground today will not be an issue and JJ Slevin rejoins him.

IEMERALD TIME was making his hurdle debut after a 270-day break when I tipped him 4th February. He jumped like a seasoned hurdler and was right there at the front until tiring close home and falling two out. He'll be fitter today on more favourable ground. Tom Bellamy rejoins him which is another plus. His rivals today do not look as strong as they did back at Ludlow and I'm confident of a big run.

This looks similar to yesterday's NAP race which I got all wrong! Three at the head of the market look streets ahead on prices but this race is a juvenile hurdle and they are more difficult to predict as they are young and unexposed. KNIGHTON (33/1) was beaten just under 3 lengths by My Kinda Ghaiy (5/1) in January, that was a massive improvement on his debut run. Today, he has the services of the trainer's no.1 jockey and I'm happy taking a chance at 33/1 that further improvement will see him at least make the places.

Willie Mullins sends one runner, He's On Fire, over to Carlisle today, its an ominous sign but the market reflects this with prohibitive odds of 1/3. His form in France doesn't look anything special. I've shortlisted Johnny Moonshine (5/1), Forever Louie (22/1) and ROSA DIAZ (33/1). The latter won her sole P2P race in Ireland before an excellent hurdle debut run in December finishing a close-up 5th of 12 in a race that has since produced 2 winners and a place. Her second run over hurdles was very poor though finishing a well-beaten 4th of 5 in January. Johnny Moonshine looks safer but 5/1 is poor value, Forever Louie is from the Menzies yard and could make the places but he's trying the hurdles for the first time today and carries risks. ROSA DIAZ is still very unexposed and maybe the return to a right-handed track can help produce the form of her debut run. At 33/1, its worth a bet.

An intriguing opener at Carlisle where 3 previous hurdle winners head the market at 10/11, 2/1 and 5/1. The market says no other horse has a chance with several occupying the next best at 33/1. MATCHING ENERGY could spring a surprise here, he won a P2P and then won his debut bumper run at Hexham. He was the only horse to match strides with the heavily odds-on favourite (1/14) back in December over this course and distance before falling at the last. He would have been beaten but he was a massive 40 lengths clear of the rest of the field, some of those have gone on to closely place in races since so it put that 'F' in his form line in a different light. Callum Bewley has a good record here and partners him again today.

CIRCLE OF SECRETS (9/1) has raced twice over hurdles and is another unexposed 4 year-old. Finishing 4th of 14 on hurdle debut in heavy ground at Fairyhouse in November, he then went much closer at the end of December in a decent race. Apprentice Tom Broughton takes another 5lb off meaning he's effectively running with a featherweight of 10st 4lb. Top Geegeez Speed Rating and 2nd highest Racing Post Topspeed Rating. Very likely to place and has a chance of winning if WAY OF STARS does not fire.

Only one race interests me on Thursday and I'm going for a strong win bet on WAY OF STARS (9/2). A smart flat horse between 1m 4f and 1m7f, he made his hurdle debut mid-December at Exeter in heavy ground finishing a close-up third behind two very useful rivals. The form of that race has worked out very well indeed - Winner, Klycot, went on to finish second in a Grade 2 next time before smashing the opposition in a Class 4 last time out. Second place went to Lord Byron, who also went on to finish only 4 lengths behind the winner in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham in January. That form line is streets ahead of anything else in the race. The Pipe stable are in good form at present and the talented Jack Tudor has a great course record here and takes the reins again after that great debut effort.

Two runs over hurdles, WHATHAVEYOU (18/1) made a low-key debut in November but showed considerable improvement to finish 9 lengths 5th of 14 in a decent race for the grade early January. Both of those runs were over this course and he'll have learnt a lot from them. Bruce Lynn partners him again and I expect further improvement in a race where only Green Angel has any hurdling experience of note.

Fifteen runners at the time of writing. Willie Mullins enters FOU DE TOI. He's currently 1/2 favourite but has only ran once in France back in May 2024. He has a Triumph Hurdle entry and we know what Mullins is capable of, but I'm not tempted at all. Second favourite, VITORIO PIEL at 5/2 has raced three times, all at Punchestown, although finishing 2nd last time, there were only five runners and the form of his races has been mediocre. PUMA'S DREAM (8/1) showed marked improvement on only his second run in a decent quality race finishing a close-up 4th of 20. Similar distance and conditions today will suit, and with Elliot's top jockey booked, a bold show is expected.

LE LABO (2/1) won a bumper here over today's distance last March on his Rules debut. Not so impressive on hurdle debut in November, unseating at the first, he was obviously still very well regarded when going off at 11/2 three weeks later at Cork. He ran a blinder that day and was 4 lengths clear of Kazansky when falling at the last. Kazansky has since gone on to win a Grade 2 and finished a close second in a Grade 1 recently. That level of form is head-and-shoulders above anything in this race and a repeat of that effort, without the fall, will give him his win.

Lightly raced having had three poor runs in bumpers in early 2025, UPTOWN LASS (66/1) showed significant improvement after a summer break to finish 9 lengths 4th of 6 on hurdle debut, losing 3rd place with a mistake at the last. The form of that race has turned out to be quite respectable and she has a sporting chance here, Stanners Glen and Count Of Vendome at the head of the market look strong but there is little else of note form-wise so UPTOWN LASS could easily sneak a place......or better!

SHERMINATOR (5/2) is lightly raced winning on hurdle debut in January 2025 before winning again under a penalty two months later - the form of those two races has worked out well. After a 277 day break, he was running well in a Class 2 hurde at Cheltenham in December when taking a heavy fall. Bryan Carver rejoins him today and he rates a great value bet in this race. Others of note are Skelton's FIRST CANDIDATE (4/1) and the EMERALD TIME (33/1).
