A very tight-looking beginners' chase with nine runners. The top three in the betting all have a reasonable chance, but the steady support in the market for Dameauscottlestown, from 3/1 early into 2/1 favourite, is very significant. She has been running well over hurdles over 2m to 2m 2f and makes her chase debut today for trainer Gavin Cromwell, who could do with a winner before Cheltenham.

Has now become a rather frustrating character, notching up a few placed efforts when running on late but never catching the eventual winner. This is a hunter chase, and I expect him to hold back last and then move forward from about three out. He jumps well and handles more than today's distance, which is handy as conditions could prove very testing.

Moves back up in class today after winning a Wetherby hurdle by 15 lengths and sent off 1/7 favourite. Put in some slow leaps over hurdles when fourth in the Formby at Aintree in December and can be forgiven that poor run. Doesn't encounter opposition like that today, but it is a competitive race. Ben Pauling is in fantastic form with a 31% strike rate in the last two weeks, with 10 winners.

One that went into my notebook last time out was the Olly Murphy-trained Benign Dictator, who got outpaced approaching the home bend but plugged on gamely when stepped up in class at Huntingdon. Soft conditions that day probably didn't bring out his best, but he has improved since stepping up in distance and should at least place now, down in class and on better ground.

A good race to start the day at Clonmel. Speculateur, trained by Gordon Elliott, came 3rd at Punchestown in a very hot race won by Too Bossy For Us, who is Cheltenham-bound for Willie Mullins. He led that day, hurdled well, and traveled nicely throughout, but the race was a sprint from the home bend and he didn't have that extra gear. He stayed on nicely nevertheless. Steps up in trip and will expose any weakness in the horses at the top of the market.

Like many in this race, the ground could prove a problem, but his win over 3m here at Bangor was very good. He followed up with a fair effort at Uttoxeter when dropping off the pace late on. He won the Hexham Marathon, so he gets today's distance. This race could be slow motion at the finish.

The best of today's racing comes from Ireland, but there are plenty of short-priced favourites on offer. Zanoosh comes into this race in fantastic form after winning a maiden hurdle at Punchestown in mid-December and then followed it up with a handicap win at Navan. She runs here in a mares' race but is up in class. The form is rock solid, and she handles the ground conditions better than her main rivals.

Didn't really work out after three runs over fences despite winning at Exeter and now reverts back to hurdles. Did nothing wrong in novice hurdles races last season, but the step up to the Ryanair Mares' Hurdle at the Festival was a step too far. A rating of 129 here is pretty fair, and her form holds up pretty well against today's rivals.
