Sent off 15/8 favourite on debut at Newmarket but disappointed in fourth. It was encouraging that he plugged on gamely and didn't lose too much ground, but he just didn't seem to quicken. Obviously well thought of, and that race was a Class 2 novice and far exceeds the quality of his main rivals' class. Trainer Andrew Balding usually targets this race and won it last year.

Plenty of racing today, and it's easy to miss one. Charencey is hidden away at Leicester. He was well backed on his seasonal debut at Nottingham, probably because he's now well handicapped off 55. Now on 54, and although he was fifth last time, he never got rolling and had to change direction at a crucial stage. He will run better today.

Loves it at Bath and hasn't run a bad race yet. Importantly, he ran well for third last time when leading and battling strongly before getting passed in the dying strides. He has yet to get that elusive win after 27 attempts but runs off the same handicap mark in this apprentice race, with the more-than-capable Ashley Lewis taking off 3 lb.

One I like here is French raider Sahlan, who had mixed form last year with a disappointing run at the start of the year but then two eye-catching performances at Deauville: winning from off the pace in a Group 3 and following it up with Group 1 success at Longchamp. On his final run of the season he finished 5th at Del Mar in the Breeders' Cup, but the track probably didn't suit his racing style and he can reverse form with the eventual winner Notable Speech. A decent enough price each way, and he can finish off strongly from a wide position ??" French style.

It was a tough season with place finishes at Ascot and the Curragh and a 7th in the Arc. But on the final run she got the better of a tough field to win on Champions Day at Ascot. Season debut here and hopefully ready. Trainer Andrew Balding has had plenty of winners this week and plenty running well, so the stable is in form. Kalpana is a class above her rivals here and should win going away.
