Exquisite Acclaim won twice around this time last year, including this race off a 3 lb higher mark. He has a really good course and distance record with 3 wins and 3 places from 8 runs. He looks to be hitting his form again, with a second and a win in his last two runs. With him still being 3 lb lower than for last year’s win and with his trainer in decent form, I can see him going close.

Not very original, but Mr Griffiths does look likely to be an improver for these staying trips on soft ground. It was interesting how he started favorite last time out when tackling the big increase in distance. Connections obviously knew he would be well handicapped. He won that race well after hitting a flat spot, then made a mistake at the second last by being right up the leaders' backsides, but stayed on well afterwards, looking like he won cosily. He's had a nice break since that race, and I can see him improving again and defying his 6 lb rise.

Drybirgh makes his debut for Oli Rix. I usually don't back them first time out for a new trainer, as I think more often than not they are not fully ready. It's more of a feeler to see where they are at, but 12/1 looks a fair price for this one. He's only had five runs, two of which were on the AW, so is pretty unexposed, and his last run in October wasn't too bad considering he was pretty keen. He's got a decent draw in stall 3 and J Peate comes here for just this one ride.

Lantry Lady has ran OK against better opposition than this the last two runs, hinting that she may be coming into form. I'd imagine she has had issues, as she only ran twice last season and may be getting wound up slowly. This looks a good opportunity to win another G3. Black Smoke looks a massive price at 33/1. Sure, he's been disappointing of late, but his mark has now fallen to the rock-bottom mark of 45. He won a division of this race last year off a 6 lb higher mark and is a three-time course-and-distance winner. The trainer, D. M. Loughnane, has been out of form for a while now, but this has probably helped make the price as large as it is. Sooner or later he will start having winners. With his horses favourably handicapped, it's often all a cycle with these handicappers.

In a race where the market is dominated by the more sexy connections??"the Hendersons, Ingram, Snowdon and Olly Murphy??"this can often lead to massive prices about other runners with lesser-known trainers. Flagstone didn't run too badly on debut, and some of the horses ahead of him have franked the form to a degree. Russian Virtue looks a decent price at 28/1 in this. He's won two times out of six over CD and ran quite well back in November over CD, finishing 4th. The winner that day went on to finish 2nd off a 4 lb higher mark, and the horse that won next time out. The 2nd in that November race went on to be rated 11 lb higher, so that piece of CD form worked out. This does not look a very strong race, and I'd rather be with one at a decent price which I could imagine has a chance of winning. Staffordshire, for me, fits that bill. Staffordshire looks to be a big, strong-looking horse who perhaps just needs time to mature into his ability. His form doesn't look the most appealing, but his mark has been falling. Last time out, after a 77-day break, he ran way too keen at the rear of the field, but turned into the home straight as if he was going to stay on. His earlier exertions caught up with him and he looked to be eased. His trainer, J. Cavendish, has been in good form in the last couple of weeks, and 8/1 looks fair.

This selection is a real punt because its form is hard to read, but at a big price it looks interesting. What really caught my eye was the ride given last time out. When making its handicap debut it was bumped at the start and impeded, so it ended up at the back. No problem because it was a small field, but the jockey took it out wide and the horse looked to have a good opportunity to get tucked back in at the head of the field. The jockey appeared to restrain it, keeping the horse wide. Long story short, it was ridden to get its mark down, which it did, dropping 2 lb. Today the same connections may deem the mark too high, but it is unexposed, has a good jockey aboard, and is interesting at the prices.

Quite a few in here look to have a chance, but at the prices Beta Reader looks to be better value. He is a 4-year-old who has not had a great deal of racing, so there could be improvement in him. He ran some solid races off around this mark and higher, winning off a 3 lb higher mark. This will be his third run for new trainer L. Mongan. On his last run he made an eye-catching move, circling the field to take up the running into the final bend, but was beaten in the home straight by two horses who went on to win and finish 2nd next time out. That run was under today's apprentice Tyrese Cameron, who showed initiative to make that move around the field, as it was a very slowly run race at the time, and in a weaker race it would have paid off.

The front of the market looks short enough for me in this race. My mate Beattie stands out at the prices. These connections have had some big-priced winners of late. I'm hoping this could be another. Back in September/October the horse looked to be coming into form with a few decent runs off 50/51. He then left for today's trainer, S. Dixon, and had a run in November that was a bit disappointing. But I think a lot of trainers don't have their horse cherry ripe on their first outing when receiving the horse from another yard. I would imagine it's more of a run to gauge where they are. The horse's mark has fallen to 49 after that run, and if fit and ready off a break there's potential he could go okay at a big price, 33/1.

On his first run at the start of October he was brushed aside by the other runners, but what was interesting was they didn't pull away from him in the final furlong. One of the three horses was rated 81 and the winner was a Shadwell horse. This really looked as if it was a pace issue and that an extra furlong would suit, which he gets today. He then didn't run to form at Chelmsford again over 6f; that was for a new trainer. Today is his third run and his third trainer, J.R. Jenkins, who is in form.
