Better Days Ahead

Daily Racing

25 EWNAP

@+1400

Win

45

Better Days Ahead was sixth in this last year, and this looks to be his main target for him this year. He has been kept fresh by skipping Cheltenham and having just two runs so far this season. He races off top weight in this, off the same mark as last year, and has the same jockey claiming 7 lb, who has been in form over the PTP. Better Days Ahead is still relatively unexposed and could still improve. At 18/1 he looks decent value to again finish in the six and, hopefully, win.

Shecouldbeanything

-50

Shecouldbeanything ran pretty well in the last year, finishing 7th off a 1 lb higher mark. She has Jack Kennedy on board this year and has been kept fresh for this, with just two runs this season. Her latest was a 3rd in the Thynn Stakes on heavy ground off this mark of 140. She is sun-exposed over these staying trips and will likely prefer the better ground. She is a decent price in the 40s on the exchange.

I think North Shore could be better than he's shown to date. He was given some pretty educational rides in group races amongst horses and ran solid races in those in prep for the triumph. He was well backed on the day of the triumph; I think it was 30s into 16/1, but in the race he faded away pretty tamely. I'm willing to give him another chance in this, as I do think he has a very good chance of being in the first 3.

Saveforarainyday looks a nice sort who is progressing with every run. Her trainer is in better form than at the start of the season. She looks to be a quite big, strong mare who I could see potentially being better than her mark of 123. With six places on offer, 8/1 looks OK.

Karbau was perhaps a little disappointing at Cheltenham without running too badly, but was too far back on ground that was quick enough. He was Mullins' No. 1 for the County, so I very much doubt they were too far out in thinking this horse is likely well handicapped.

Balding and Oisin have won the two runnings of this race, so he knows what it takes to win this valuable contest. I can imagine this has very much been the target for this horse, especially with his owners. He looked a classy horse last time out, who traveled into the race very powerfully before tiring. Balding also has another runner in the race for canny connections, so could be worth a saver at a bigger price.

Time for Showcasing looks a decent price at 18/1. This filly is the second-highest rated from last year, just 2 lb lower than Andab. She has some big early-season entries in the English and Irish 1000 Guineas, so she could already be quite fit. With the favourite having a penalty and I wasn't blown away by the second favourite Billecart, all in all 18/1 looked decent value.

Chiedozie is a big price at 40/1, but on some old form he could have a chance here off this lowly mark. He will likely come on for his last run, which was after a 410-day break, and Lewis Kent can claim 3 lb in this. He has a decent draw in stall 4, and I think 6f suits him best.

Afadil has fallen to a good mark of 120. He is definitely capable of winning off this mark. He ran some solid races in very competitive handicaps, so if he handles the extra distance he should go close in this. The yard is in decent form and he is reunited with Harry Cobden. His close 5th, beaten just 4½ lengths in the 2024 County off 130 on heavy ground, gives me hope that he will have the stamina for the extra distance. I would imagine that was a pretty stamina-sapping race, and today’s better ground should help.

Roccobear

Daily Racing

50 WIN

@+5000

Lose

-50

Roccobear is the outsider of the field at 50/1, so it's a bit of a long shot. In his first two races he looked like a horse that needed further than the 6f, so today's 7f should suit him better. His last run just looked like a run for a handicap mark, running widest of all the way round with no intention of trying to win the race. He was given a mark of 65, which possibly wasn't the kindest from the handicapper, with many of the horses in front of him rated lower. The handicapper probably thought it was a bit too obvious as well. But at 50/1 he's worth a small bet because he doesn't look a bad horse and could improve. J. Peate goes there for just the one ride.

President Scottie has been disappointing this season, but his mark has fallen some way from 122 down to 110. It would not surprise me if this quite valuable race has been the target for his trainer at his local track. President Scottie is still quite lightly raced, with just 14 career starts, eight of which were over fences, and he has promised at times to be much better than a 110-rated chaser.

When Paul Nichols thinks he has a good horse, he tends to bring them along very steadily. This looks like it has been the case with this horse. If you ignore his last run, where he was found to have a cut and probably did not appreciate the heavy going, he looks to be progressing nicely. His 2nd here on the 29th of December has worked out very well. With the promise of much more to come, he surely has a very good chance in this.

Bashful Boy has a few things going for him in this. His apprentice jockey should know him well, having ridden him several times, and he still gets to claim 3 lb in this. The horse is proven over the distance; some of the opposition are not. His handicap mark has continued to fall, and the yard looks in decent form. With just seven runners but three places on offer, a each-way bet looks worth it.

Harry Derham is going for a hat-trick in this race, having won it for the last two years. I think he has a very good chance of getting it. Came From Nowhere clearly sets a very decent standard, but Le Frimeur looks like he could be quite decent. It was evident he was well thought of, starting off even-money favorite against a year-older horse with slightly more experience and a rating of 115. He won that race well; the extra furlong and the galloping track of Newbury should suit.

Dutch Corner probably has the best form in this race as it stands. That should be looked on more favourably when the races are watched. In his first hurdles race he was given a very conservative ride. Harry Skelton made no attempt to try to win the race but still ran respectably, with the two in front frank[ing] the form. Next time out was pretty much the same against Sober Glory. Harry just coasted round, held up, but stayed on well, not pushed out.

The Bell Conductor has been running pretty poorly, but his mark has fallen some way. His comeback run off a break last time out, despite finishing 6 of 7, wasn't too bad. He won on this card last year, then ran very well, finishing 2nd; the form is working out well. This season he has been campaigned over fences with mixed success. He's since had a wind op and a short break of 54 days, and is off just a 4 lb higher mark than when finishing 2nd to Rambo T. He could be well in, as he is still unexposed.

Charlus is new to the Skelton yard, just coming in February from Willie Mullins with a mark of 133. Dan quickly ran him on quick ground at Kempton. He ran awful, not jumping well at all, and pulled up. The handicapper very nicely dropped him 3 lb. You have to remember if Mullins had still had him and brought him over for this, the British handicapper would probably have raised him 6 lb or so, making him possibly 9 lb better off than he could have been. Anyways, at 150/1 and bigger on the exchange he's worth a pop, and today's jockey was riding him that day at Kempton, making you think this has been the plan.

The horse looks like it's been campaigned with this in mind rather than as an afterthought. In his last race he was a bit eye-catching. He really looked like this step up in trip will suit.

Full Of Life at 50/1 looks worth a bet each-way for Henry de Bromhead, who has a good record in this race. I also like Henry's other horse, Echoing Silence each-way.
