Way of Life has won and run very well off breaks in the past. It has won off just a 1 lb lower mark than today's and has run very well off higher marks than today's. This race might not be the most competitive, with some of the runners having had recent good spells; they are handicapped to their highest. So, at the prices, Way of Life looks very appealing at 10/1. If fit, it could go close or win this contest.

Brace for Landing ??" if trained by some other trainer it probably wouldn't look as appealing. Dan Skelton targets these valuable handicaps by having his horses well handicapped for them. He does seem to be one of the most patient, forward-thinking trainers. This horse does look like it has been plotted, with them knowing this is a valuable handicap where you can get in off a low mark. I wonder if Skelton's other horse is a non-runner to allow Brace for Landing to get into the race. The maximum field is 22, I think. If this was the case, it would scream that this was a well-handicapped horse. He's certainly very unexposed and comes here off a small break of 63 days. At 9/1 he looks worth chancing, as I'm sure the Skeltons could probably have chosen from several horses for this race.

Go Dante is sure to be primed for this race, going for his hat-trick. He is 3/3 over CD and will appreciate the going, where some of the field may not. He is only 2 lb higher now than when winning over CD back in December, and I don't think he will have that many finish in front of him if all goes well. So at 16/1 and five places there is a very good chance of getting some place money at least. I think that he would be quite a bit shorter in the market if he were younger, but even at the age of ten he has not been over-raced.

This does not look a particularly strong maiden. The short-price favourite, while looking like the most likely winner, has not had his form work out well. At a price, Sea Warrior made a very encouraging debut over CD back in November, and that form has been working out well. He has disappointed somewhat since, but looks like a horse who can show improvement if he gets his jumping together and puts it up to the favourite.

At 22/1 Dakota Power looks decent value in this. Chiedozie has many negatives. He's a 22-race maiden and has only been placed three times from those 22 runs. He comes here off a 410-day absence. However, there is a chance he could be well handicapped. He is probably better over 6f, which he gets tonight. He does have some back form. His initial handicap mark was 70 and is now 46. The cheek pieces are on tonight, which may mean they mean business. He has a good draw in stall 3, and at 28/1 I feel he is worth taking a chance on.

To me the favourite looks a bit too short at around 4/5 with three other unexposed runners. The one I like the look of is Vitorio Piel. He made a very impressive debut under NHF. He was well backed and won well, a form which has worked out very well. Since then he has perhaps disappointed over hurdles, having been very supported again. Maybe 2 miles on good ground was too sharp for him, and maybe the horses who beat him in his last two will turn out to be decent. Emmet Mullins' horses have been running well with plenty of winners of late, so at 5/2 I have a suspicion he has more class than these and is the bet for me.

Harry Lowes looks a horse with improvement to come. Over 2m4 last time out he was under heavy restraint from the get-go, wanting to go faster. Coming down to the second-last he was travelling powerfully when badly hampered. I think this really knocked him off his stride, as he hurdled the second-last as if he was jumping a National fence, suggesting he really had more left in the tank than he showed, fading into 5th. Nevertheless, that was still probably the strongest form on offer here. In fact, in all of his runs the form is working out OK. I'm sure there's improvement to come in all the runners, but for me he looks the most likely here.

Star Fighter has dropped to a mark where he could be winning soon. His last two efforts were much better with two 2nds. He's a 10-year-old now, so is unlikely to be getting better, but a mark of 50 looks to be within his grasp. Today he has a decent draw in stall two and has 7 lb claimed off his back with Jack Laugharne riding. This looks to be his first ride as an amateur, so who knows if he's any good. I'm taking a chance that, with his surname, he is a son of a trainer. The sons/daughters of trainers tend to be decent, having spent their whole lives around horses, and that 7 lb could make the difference. He now meets Knight of Magic, who beat him by a head two starts ago and is 12 lb better off (including the 7 lb claim). That horse is around 5/2, so at 9/1 I'm happy to take the chance on Star Fighter.

Having some doubts about some of the market leaders. Will Grangeclare West handle the heavy ground? He has form on soft but has disappointed when encountering heavy. One at a tasty price who looks very interesting is Intense Raffles, who has a great course record with 3 wins and a 2nd from 4 runs. The 2nd was over CD in this race last year when 2nd to Nick Rocket, beaten 3/4 length, giving him 3 lb. Yes, he has disappointed since, but his mark has now dropped 3 lb from last year's Grand National to 148 (if he makes the cut). This could be some of the reason, and I'd be confident in this race and then the National being his targets all season. Other pluses are he runs well in heavy going and he is still only 8, who hasn't had a huge amount of racing.
